Bapatla District Collector bans Black Burley tobacco cultivation for this year
Chairing a review meeting at the Bapatla Collectorate on Wednesday with officials from MARKFED, the Agriculture Department, and private buyers, Mr. Murali said excessive cultivation—driven by unkept promises from companies—had led to market crashes, leaving farmers in distress. He warned that any violation of the ban, including nursery cultivation, would invite strict action, including destruction of crops. 'Even nursery cultivation of Black Burley tobacco is strictly prohibited,' he said, urging farmers to switch to more profitable alternatives.
Reassuring farmers, the Collector said the government would stand by them and support those transitioning to sustainable crops. However, farmers who have already harvested Black Burley will be allowed to sell their produce to private buyers. He also cautioned growers against bringing tobacco with moisture content exceeding 20% to procurement centres and advised them to safeguard the crop from rain damage. Mr. Murali reaffirmed the administration's commitment to protecting farmer interests and assured procurement of every legally grown leaf this season.

Collector emphasises support for golden families under P4 scheme
Chirala: Bapatla district collector J Venkata Murali informed that financial assistance will be provided to Golden Families identified under the P4 scheme to lift them out of poverty during a constituency-level meeting held at the Municipal Office in Chirala on Saturday. In the meeting focused on P4, Surya Ghar, and handloom development initiatives, Collector Murali and Chirala MLA M Malakondaiah felicitated local handloom artisans following the national award received for Kuppadam silk sarees under the 'One District One Product' (ODOP) initiative. During the event, the collector distributed loans worth Rs 6.00 crores to 30 DWCRA groups under MEPMA and Rs 7.00 crores to 40 DWACRA groups under Velugu through cheques. Drawing inspiration from Dr BR Ambedkar's journey from poverty to becoming the architect of India's Constitution, Collector Murali emphasised the crucial role of mentors in eradicating poverty. He revealed that under Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu's P4 policy, he has adopted 10 destitute families from Cherukupalli mandal. The collector said that in the Chirala constituency, 8,405 Golden Families have been identified, with 402 mentors already assigned to 4,400 families. He appealed for mentors to come forward for the remaining 4,000 families, promising government recognition and respect for their service. For handloom development, the collector emphasised the need to provide liberal loans to weavers and criticised the approval of only 327 units out of 1695 solar power applications. He said plans to establish ODOP stalls at Bapatla, Chirala, Vadarevu, and Suryalanka Beach to promote Kuppadam sarees, incorporating modern technology like scanners to share the history of these traditional garments. The collector also announced that the government has agreed to develop the 26-acre Handloom Park in Devangapuri, Chirala mandal, into a Handloom MSME hub to boost the sector further. Chirala RDO Chandrsekhar, Municipal Chairman M Sambasiva Rao, DRDA PD Srinivasa Rao, CPO Shalom Raju, Handlooms AD Raghunanda, and officials from various departments also participated in the programme.

Traders warned against diversion of urea
Eluru: District collector K Vetriselvi has warned that legal action will be taken against shop owners if urea is diverted for purposes other than agriculture. A district-level review meeting was held at the Collectorate here on Thursday with representatives from fertiliser manufacturers, wholesalers, retail dealers, agriculture, cooperatives, Markfed, DCMS and others. Collector Vetriselvi and joint collector P Dhatri Reddy participated in the meeting. Speaking on the occasion, Vetriselvi said that the district administration is ready to supply all the required fertilisers in the district. Dealers should act responsibly without causing any trouble to the farmers. She warned that strict action will be taken against those who stock fertilisers illegally, sell them at high prices, and engage in black marketing. Teams comprising agriculture department officials have been formed to conduct surprise inspections on fertiliser shops and warehouses. The collector clarified that it is not allowed to store unauthorised fertilisers and pesticides in shops. There will be special vigilance on this matter so that the fertilizers specified for the district cannot be diverted. While selling fertilisers to meet the needs of the farmers, the relevant documents should be checked and sold through biometrics. The fertiliser movement plan should be strictly implemented. Farmers should be made aware of the problems arising due to the use of fertilisers beyond the limit. Farmers should be sensitised on integrated nutrient management with nano fertilizers and nano fertilisers should be promoted. Drones have been made available in large numbers in the district and they should be encouraged. Dealers have a social responsibility to provide timely fertilisers to farmers so that there is no shortage of fertilisers in Kharif. The supply of urea and other fertilisers to aquaculture should be controlled. Necessary monthly plan should be implemented to supply fertilizers until November, she said. Joint collector Dhatri Reddy said that records of fertilizer and pesticide stocks should be maintained. They should be checked by the Mandal Agriculture Department officials. Fertilisers should be provided to farmers on the basis of eCRAFT registration and biometrics. Fertilisers should be provided to farmers without any hassle. Eluru AMC Chairman Mamillapalli Parthasarathy, District Agriculture Officer Habib Basha, Markfed DM Prasad Gupta, DCO Srinivas, several fertilizer manufacturers, wholesale and retail dealers, DCMS and Agriculture Department officials participated in the meeting.

Significant rise in acreage of oilseeds, pulses in Uttar Pradesh
Agency: PTI Lucknow, Jul 24 (PTI) Uttar Pradesh is witnessing a rise in the cultivation of oilseeds and pulses with the Kharif season witnessing a significant expansion in the acreage of sesame, groundnut, and soybean, an official statement said on Thursday. According to the latest data from the Agriculture Department, in 2024, the total area under oilseed crops stood at 432.25 thousand hectares, which has jumped to 547.14 thousand hectares in 2025, it said. The most striking increase has been in sesame cultivation, which soared from 180.26 thousand hectares to 303 thousand hectares in just one year, it added. Groundnut and soybean cultivation have also expanded. The area under soybean increased from 34.12 thousand hectares to 40 thousand hectares, while groundnut acreage rose from 204 thousand hectares to 218 thousand hectares. In the pulses category, pigeon pea (arhar) remains the primary Kharif pulse and continues to be a farmer's favorite. As sowing of some varieties extends to September, a further increase in acreage is anticipated, the statement said. So far, the area under pigeon pea has grown significantly from 184 thousand hectares to 273 thousand hectares. Moong cultivation has also increased from 30,000 hectares to 32,000 hectares, it said. The area under major Kharif crops, such as paddy and maize, has also increased. Paddy acreage rose from 4,193 thousand hectares to 5,546 thousand hectares, and maize from 636 thousand hectares to 701 thousand hectares. Farmer interest in cotton cultivation is also on the rise, with the area expanding from 7,000 hectares to 18,000 hectares, it said. Overall, the total area under Kharif crops in Uttar Pradesh has increased substantially from around 6,574 thousand hectares last year to 8,262 thousand hectares in the current season, it added.
