Mahesh Bhatt fondly remembers Reema Lagoo 8 years after her sudden demise

Time of India31-05-2025
Reema Lagoo
, known for the warmth she radiated on screen and the emotional depth she brought to her roles, left the film industry in mourning when she suddenly passed away on May 18, 2017. Filmmaker
Mahesh Bhatt
— who collaborated with her across film and television — in a candid chat with ETimes, recalls the moment he heard the news of her demise and the stillness that followed.
Fondly remembering the many creative moments together, Bhatt honoured her memory, her artistry, and the profound legacy she left behind.
We lost Reema Lagoo — someone you collaborated with so often — far too soon, didn't we?
Mahesh Bhatt:
Even now, eight years after her sudden passing, I see her luminous eyes, her unspoken warmth, the stillness from which her performances flowed. Some presences don't vanish. They settle into the heart.
What was your reaction to her sudden demise?
Bhatt:
Eight years ago, on an ordinary morning, my phone rang. It was
Gurudev Bhalla
, my protégé, producer of Naamkaran. 'Sir,' he said gently, 'Reema Lagoo is gone. She passed this morning. The shoot is cancelled. May I come pick you up?' His words froze the day. As sudden as death—everything changed. Moments later, I stood beside her. Still. Silent. The warmth gone. She was 58. And just like that, memory took over.
What were some of your memories of working with this charming actress?
Bhatt:
I was back on the set of Aashiqui, day one. Reema was playing a single mother —quiet, dignified, wounded. The scene where she asks her son to return her mangalsutra— a silent declaration that the marriage is over, became the soul of the film. Another moment that lingers was her advice to Anu(Aggarwal), the young lead, not to give up her career just to soothe a man's insecurity.
Reema played that scene with rare conviction, quietly challenging the old scripts that demanded women surrender their dreams. She didn't just perform it—she lived it.
Thereafter, you went on to work with her on several projects
Bhatt:
We worked again in 'Gumrah', with Sridevi, where she played a mother revealing a long-buried truth as she approached death. And later in Naajayaz, as a woman torn between her son—a cop—and her lover, an underworld don.
Reema's performances never shouted; they ached, they endured, they spoke with stillness.
Then came 'Naamkaran', the television adaptation of your film 'Zakham'?
Bhatt:
When we were casting the matriarch, I said, 'Only Reema Lagoo.'. She had stepped away from screen work, was doing theatre, but agreed to meet. After hearing the part, she smiled and said, 'Will you direct the first episode, just to set the tone?'
I said, 'Yes, Reema ji.
I will.'
That day, I returned to the set—and watched her breathe life into that world. She uplifted everyone. Her grace, her precision, her emotional depth turned every line into something more.
Her death must have shaken you.
Bhatt:
That breath was gone. We stood around her, stunned. It felt as though time had paused, the sun extinguished at high noon. But she lives on—in memory, in every frame she graced, in the quiet strength she brought to her roles. Thank you, Reema ji—for the truth you embodied, and the light you left behind.

Vaibhav Raj Gupta On His Transformation In Mandala Murders: ‘It Changed Everything'

The transformation went beyond just appearances, eventually marking a shift in how Vaibhav Raj Gupta carried himself, both on and off the screen. Mandala Murders, the latest thriller on Netflix, has quickly become a fan favourite, thanks to its gripping storyline and strong performances. Among the standout names is actor Vaibhav Raj Gupta, known for his role in Gullak. For the show, the actor stepped into a completely different zone and even underwent a major physical transformation. In a conversation with ETimes, Vaibhav shared, 'This is the first time I went through a physical transformation." He added, 'I was on a strict diet for eight months during the shoot. When you have a good body, you feel confident. Even the stylists are excited to work with you because you can carry off anything!" Vaibhav Raj Gupta Feels Good After Transformation The transformation went beyond just appearances, eventually marking a shift in how he carried himself, both on and off the screen. He added, 'Before this show, I looked very different. I didn't go to the gym or follow any diet. But the transformation changed everything—your personality, your presence. You start getting noticed more. There's a shift in your aura. You walk into a room and there's a new kind of energy. My health is good, I look good, and I feel good today." Although Vaibhav is now earning recognition for his role in Mandala Murders, his journey in the industry has been far from easy. Recalling the early days, he noted, 'When you're new and unaware of how things work, it's easy to be misled. As they uncover mysterious symbols and hidden motives, it leads them to face a secret society where the line between faith and madness is blurred. Has Bollywood Found Its New Superstar In Saiyaara Star Ahaan Panday?

New Delhi: After Saiyaara's blockbuster success, a new name has been dominating every conversation, Ahaan Panday. From Instagram fan edits to viral reels and heartfelt DMs from fans, the curiosity around Ahaan has hit fever pitch. He's being called charming, magnetic, and most of all, someone with that elusive X-factor that makes a star. In fact, several moviegoers NDTV spoke to were quick to use the word "superstar" when describing Ahaan. "I really liked his acting. I definitely think he has the potential to become the next superstar," said one viewer. Another added, "He has that charm. If he chooses the right films, he'll go very far." It's not just audiences, the studio behind Saiyaara is also watching this phenomenon unfold. YRF CEO Akshaye Widhani revealed to NDTV that even Aditya Chopra had noted, "This generation needs a superstar." And while the intention was never to launch Ahaan as one, the reception is undeniable. "We didn't set out to make him a star, but it looks like the audience has decided for us," Widhani admitted. But is it fair or even wise to pin the future of superstardom on someone just one film old? Film trade analyst Taran Adarsh urges caution. "It's a bit too early to compare Ahaan with any superstar whether it's Salman, Shah Rukh, Aamir, Ajay Devgn, Hrithik Roshan, Akshay Kumar, Ranbir Kapoor or Ranveer Singh. These people have decades of experience behind them. Ahaan has just started off, so let's not burden him by calling him the next big superstar just yet." Still, Adarsh acknowledges that Ahaan has made a strong impression. "Yes, I would say he's the heartthrob of this generation right now. The youth factor will always have an edge that's how it has always worked. When Shah Rukh, Salman, and Aamir were young, they got that attention. Then Hrithik, Ranbir, and Ranveer followed. Even in between, we saw actors like Varun Dhawan, Sidharth Malhotra, and Aditya Roy Kapur capturing the youth's imagination. Now, it's Ahaan's moment." He added that it's a positive sign for the industry. "We keep complaining there's a lack of new faces, new talent. But now we have Ahaan and Aneet [Padda]. It's a great phase and newcomers, even from outside the film industry, must be given opportunities. There's immense talent waiting to be discovered." But Bollywood history is filled with cautionary tales of overnight fame not translating into lasting stardom from Kumar Gaurav (Love Story) and Rahul Roy (Aashiqui) to Rajiv Kapoor (Ram Teri Ganga Maili), Bhagyashree (Maine Pyaar Kiya) and Ameesha Patel (Kaho Na Pyaar Hai). Each burst onto the scene with a massive debut hit but struggled to sustain that momentum. Stardom, as experience shows, isn't about one hit it's about consistency, choices, and reinvention. So yes, the audience is clearly hungry for a new superstar. Ahaan Panday may just be their pick. But whether he becomes the face of this generation or a fleeting heartthrob will depend on what comes next. For now, Bollywood may not officially have a new superstar, but it certainly has a strong contender.
