PETALING JAYA: The sun rises from the east, and sets in the west - this is a well-established fact for the longest time, and this is due to Earth's rotation, which is moving from west to east on its rotation.
While planets in our solar system move one way, is it true that there's a planet moving in the opposite direction?
Verdict:
TRUE
While the other planets are rotating in the same direction, only one planet is going against the flow - and that is Venus.
The second planet from the sun, has a retrograde motion - which means that the orbital or rotational motion of Venus is going in the opposite direction on its axis.
The initial theory of why Venus does this is that it initially spun in the same direction as most other planets and it simply flipped its axis 180 degrees at some point.
Scientists have argued that the sun's gravitational pull on the planet's very dense atmosphere could have caused strong atmospheric tides.
However, in 2000, a team of scientists from the French research institute Astronomie et Systemes Dynamiques proposed a new explanation.
Scientists Alexandre Correira and Jacques Laskar suggested that Venus may not have flipped at all.
According to the report published in Nature, they propose instead that its rotation slowed to a standstill and then reversed direction.
Taking into account the factors mentioned above, as well as tidal effects from other planets, the team concluded that Venus's axis could have shifted to a variety of positions throughout the planet's evolution.
Another theory is that Venus, also known as Earth's twin planet, could have been hit by a giant asteroid, leaving it spinning the other way.
While large asteroids have hit Earth during its history (one of the theories as to how the Moon formed), it seems like a plausible idea that, during the early stages of the Solar System, Venus could have been hit by a celestial object that is similar in size to itself causing it to spin backwards.
If this collision also altered Venus' orbit, the presence of the Sun, Mercury and Earth in this solar system would have pulled its orbit back to its original position.
Another fun fact is that because of Venus' slow rotation, one Venus day is about 243 Earth days or close to eight Earth months.

Its director, Mohd Zamri Shah Mastor, said the planetarium's main educational offerings, such as its indoor space theatre, remain unaffected. However, outdoor astronomical activities are facing growing limitations. "The planetarium is located in the heart of Kuala Lumpur for easy public access, which is essential for its role as an edutainment centre on astronomy and space. "But being in a capital city comes with trade-offs, particularly the visibility of the natural night sky," he said. While the planetarium can still facilitate observation of bright celestial objects like the Moon, Jupiter and Mars, Zamri noted increasing obstruction. Dimmer stars, low-lying constellations and deep-sky phenomena are now increasingly obscured by cloud cover, weather or buildings. "Sometimes, after heavy rain and on clear nights, we can still see bright planets and constellations like Orion and Leo. But thick stagnant clouds trap and scatter city lights across the sky, forming a bright dome that blocks our view, sometimes of almost the entire sky." He added that although satellite imaging was not part of the planetarium's core activities, light pollution occasionally provides an unexpected opportunity for studies focused on the pollution itself. "The situation also opens up research opportunities into the effects of artificial lighting on the urban sky," he said. However, astronomy enthusiasts and advocacy groups see the growing glow of urban lights as a threat to both science and the public's connection to space. Dark Sky Malaysia founder Emma Zulaiha Zulkifli said Malaysia has no lighting regulation or planning policy, allowing unchecked artificial lighting to flood both urban and rural areas, particularly in the Klang Valley. She warned that night sky brightness in the Klang Valley had reached Bortle Class 8 to 9, among the most light-polluted categories, making visibility of the Milky Way nearly impossible to the naked eye. "My 85-year-old mother once told me that seeing the Milky Way was normal during her childhood. Today, it's a luxury," she said. She outlined four types of light pollution, namely sky glow, glare, light trespass and clutter, all of which impact optical astronomy. Sky glow, in particular, creates a dome of artificial light that obscures the faint glimmer of stars reaching Earth. "While stargazing with the naked eye is still possible for bright objects like the Moon and some planets, deep-sky objects and galaxies are almost entirely out of reach unless observed from remote, dark-sky locations," she said. Even astrophotography, once a popular amateur pursuit in suburban areas, now requires filters and extensive data collection to compensate for the brightness of the urban regions. As for serious astronomical research, she said it is virtually impossible in light-polluted areas unless the study is specifically designed for such environments. She believes that the solution is within reach but requires immediate collective action. "Light pollution is one of the most easily reversible forms of pollution. All we need is responsible lighting: use it only when needed, only where needed and only as bright as needed. Too much of anything can be harmful." As the country looks skywards both for education and inspiration, Emma Zulaiha urged policymakers to take steps to protect the night sky for future generations. "The night sky is a natural heritage. Let's not let it fade from the view of the next generation," she said.

French researchers were surprised to find that the level of microplastics is higher in glass bottles than in other containers. — dpa A team of investigators at France's national food agency Anses has discovered that some glass bottles have more microplastics in them than other containers, including those made of plastic. The 'surprising finding' came about in tests carried out by the Anses Laboratory for Food Safety, whose researchers fingered paint on bottle caps as the likeliest culprit for the counterintuitive outcome. 'The level of microplastics was found to be higher in glass bottles than in other containers,' the team said, with glass bottles of cola, lemonade, iced tea and beer having at least five times the amount of particles than plastic bottles or cans. 'We were expecting the opposite result when we compared the level of microplastics in different drinks sold in France,' said Iseline Chaïb of the Aquatic Food Safety Unit in Boulogne-sur-Mer, which carried out the study. The researchers aimed to figure the levels of 'microplastic contamination' in drinks and to assess the effects of container or bottle type on the amount of pollution. The team said they did not look into 'toxicological reference data', meaning that they could not determine any health risk related to the amounts of plastics found in the bottles. But they advised people to reduce the amount of plastic being washed into a drink by rinsing the caps before putting them back on a bottle. The team said that during their research, they hit upon clues such as the microplastics found in drinks being 'mostly the same colour and had the same composition as the paint on the caps'. 'Caps were suspected to be the main source of contamination, as the majority of particles isolated in beverages were identical to the colour of caps and shared the composition of the outer paint,' the team explained in a paper published by Anses. – dpa
