Holiday-goers warned not to pack white or blue swimwear this summer
As the summer holidays get underway, families across the UK are preparing for a much-needed getaway to sunny beaches and poolside retreats both domestically and overseas.
However, parents planning to take their youngsters for a swim should pay attention to a vital safety tip: the colour of your child's swimming costume could be a lifesaver.
The consumer watchdog Which? has issued a warning via Instagram, revealing that the shade of a swimsuit can make all the difference in a life or death situation, reports the Express.
Alive Solutions conducted tests on various colours and patterns in both open waters and swimming pools to assess visibility, prompting Which? to alert its followers with a stark message.
"The colour of your kid's swimsuit could save their life," Which? stated. "If you're buying a swimming costume for your child, you should choose a bright neon block colour."
They clarified that vibrant neon colours remain highly visible underwater, contrasting sharply with pale blues and whites which can become almost invisible, making it difficult to spot a child in distress.
In a series of tests evaluating swimwear visibility from different angles including surface level, shore perspective, and from above a shallow depth of two feet, many costumes were found to be "barely visible".
The standout choices for maximum visibility were neon yellow, green, and orange, while other hues simply faded away.
The organisation noted: "While the darker colours could be seen, they could easily be mistaken for shadow or dirt."
Alive Solutions' research indicated that solid colours are more visible than patterns, with neon shades being the most detectable.
The study also found that small patterns don't significantly affect visibility regardless of their colour.
Conversely, large dark patterns were shown to greatly diminish how noticeable swimwear is. For example, a plain neon orange swimsuit is more visible against a dark pool bottom compared to one with large navy stripes.
Therefore, when purchasing children's swimwear, it's advisable to choose neon colours to enhance safety.

I Thought This Chic Viral Skirt Was Designer – But It's Under £60
@@taffymsipa and @morganleighwillett As a fashion writer with an undying love for swishy silhouettes, my ideal summer skirt checklist was pretty straightforward: it needed to be made from a lightweight fabric to catch the breeze with a billowing silhouette for stifling tube journeys, and just the right dose of romantic charm. But now that August has arrived (and heatwaves have gotten more sporadic), my priorities have shifted. Now, I'm officially looking for a transitional hero – something that'll carry me from late summer into the early months of autumn with ease. Happily, I think I've just found one that ticks every box, and more at Free People. Free People may not have been my first port of call for mid-season pieces, after all, the brand typically leans into boho staples best suited to the height of summer. However, I was pleasantly surprised by its offering of transitional pieces designed to carry you from June through to October. Case in point, the Lowen Midi Skirt – a billowing A-line midi that's as versatile as it is comfortable thanks to its elasticated waistband, soft poplin construction. Free People sells the skirt in a wide array of 15 shades, yes really, including crisp neutrals such as black, white and brown alongside pastels and even a bright red that taps into summer's tomato girl trend. ©Instagram/@chelsea_zeferina ©@chelsea_zeferina Styling this skirt is incredibly easy as well. Pair it with white T-shirts or tank tops for a relaxed off-duty formula that will see you through the summer. For dressier occasions, opt for boho chic lace blouses paired with wedge heels or cowboy boots to channel Sienna Miller's signature style. As the late-summer chill sets in, layer with fine-knit button-up cardigans in muted greys for an academic twist, or throw on a jacket. Uniqlo's latest zip-up jacket has become a firm favourite among style insiders, and we at Grazia can't stop singing its praises. The skirt's calf-skimming length also lends itself well to a variety of footwear options. If you have a last-minute trip to the Med lined up, opt for some sandals (we're fans of this high street pair that looks like the Hermes Oran sandals). Or, if you have no idea what to wear when it's rainy and hot, style the skirt with a pair of biker boots for that effortless cool-girl charm. Come rain or shine, this skirt will see you through the impending transitional period with practicality and ease. 1. Lowen Midi Skirt, Ivory The crisp white version of the Lowen midi skirt is a fashion insider favorite. Effortlessly chic, it channels classic Riviera style, but add a triangle scarf tied at the waist, and it takes on a subtly bohemian twist. 2. Lowen Midi Skirt, Pink 3. Lowen Midi Skirt, Tomato Didn't you know? Tomato red is the embodiment of summer, but I think this skirt will suit September, too. Style this with white baby tees to make the bold colour pop effortlessly. 4. Lowen Midi Skirt, Cardamom Seed This sand-toned hue is perfect for a sun-drenched city break. Make sure to in a pair of suede sandals with this one. 5. Lowen Midi Skirt, Yellow The butter yellow trend continues to sky rocket, so it's no surprise that Free People designed the Lowen skirt in a similar colour. Once the temperature shifts, pair with a grey button up cardigan. 6. Lowen Midi Skirt, Purple For a feminine touch, consider the powder puff purple iteration of the Lowen – perfect for days out and about with trainers or nights out with heeled flip-flops. 7. Lowen Midi Skirt - Black If your style leans more minimalist, opt for the black version. Sleek and endlessly chic, it'll pair well with anything you already have in your wardrobe, from longline waistcoats to pretty lace blouses. Wear tights once the pre-autumn chill sets in.
