Aqaba Container Terminal partners with Queen Rania Foundation to advance Arabic literacy in Aqaba

Zawya23-07-2025
Aqaba, Jordan – Aqaba Container Terminal (ACT), the preferred gateway to Jordan, the Levant, and beyond, has signed a strategic three-year partnership agreement with the Queen Rania Foundation for Education and Development (QRF) to support Arabic literacy through the nationally recognized "Read - اقرأ" program.
The agreement was signed by Mr. Harald Nijhof, Chief Executive Officer of ACT, and Mr. Bassem Sa'ad, Chief Executive Officer of QRF. This collaboration reflects a shared commitment to educational equity and community development in Jordan.
Under this partnership, ACT will support the renovation and furnishing of the library for a public school in Aqaba. The project also includes training for librarians, principals, and Arabic-language teachers; updating the library's collection with new books catered to the appropriate age groups; as well as implementing a rigorous monitoring and evaluation framework to track impact and ensure long-term sustainability.
This partnership aligns with ACT's broader corporate social responsibility strategy, which prioritizes investment in youth empowerment and education as key drivers of sustainable growth and giving back to the local community. By creating inclusive and engaging learning environments, ACT aims to help unlock the potential of the next generation in the Aqaba community.
Commenting on the collaboration, Mr. Nijhof said, 'At ACT, we believe that real, lasting impact begins with education. Our partnership with the Queen Rania Foundation underscores our deep commitment to empowering youth and creating meaningful opportunities in our local community. By investing in Arabic literacy and inclusive learning spaces through the Read program, we're helping shape the changemakers of tomorrow.'
Mr. Bassem Saad, CEO of QRF, added, 'We are proud to partner with ACT in bringing the Read program to Aqaba. Access to quality Arabic reading resources is essential for foundational learning, and through this collaboration, we are not only building a library—we are building brighter futures. This initiative reaffirms our belief that educational equity begins with community-driven solutions and strong partnerships.'
Founded by Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah, the Queen Rania Foundation is at the forefront of education in Jordan and the Arab world. Through evidence-based programs and education research, QRF works to improve learning outcomes, ensure fluency in Arabic reading, and close educational equity gaps across the Kingdom. This collaboration with Aqaba Container Terminal marks a significant step toward promoting literacy and educational opportunity in Aqaba, reflecting the power of cross-sector partnerships to drive meaningful social impact.

Jordan: Fuel pricing committee lowers gasoline prices, raises diesel for August

AMMAN — The Fuel Pricing Committee at the Ministry of Energy on Thursday decided to reduce the prices of unleaded 90- and 95-octane gasoline and raise the price of diesel for August, while maintaining the prices of kerosene and household gas cylinders. Based on international market trends in July, the committee reduced the price of unleaded 90-octane gasoline to JD0.850 per litre for August, down from JD0.860 in July, according to an Energy Ministry statement. The price of unleaded 95-octane gasoline was also lowered to JD1.075 per litre, compared with JD1.085 the previous month. Diesel will be sold at JD0.690 per litre in August, up from JD0.675 in July. The price of kerosene remains unchanged at JD0.620 per litre, while the price of a 12.5kg household gas cylinder stays fixed at JD7, the committee announced. The committee meets monthly to review global oil price movements and adjust local fuel prices accordingly. The average price of Brent crude oil in July stood at approximately $70.9 per barrel, compared to $71.6 per barrel in June, the statement said. Also on Thursday, Chairman of the Board of Commissioners of the Energy and Minerals Regulatory Commission (EMRC) Ziad Saida announced that the commission has decided to set the fuel price difference charge on electricity bills for August 2025 at zero. Saida noted that the approved rate remains unchanged from that of July. © Copyright The Jordan Times. All rights reserved. Provided by SyndiGate Media Inc. (

Jordan: Central Bank of Jordan maintains interest rates unchanged

AMMAN — The Open Market Operations Committee of the Central Bank of Jordan (CBJ) on Thursday decided to maintain interest rates on monetary policy instruments unchanged. The CBJ said in a statement that the decision was a result of the bank's commitment to closely monitor the national economy's developments, particularly monetary and banking indicators. It also said that the decision aligns with a comprehensive review of the international and regional economic dynamics. Citing the latest economic indicators, the bank said that Jordan's economy has shown notable resilience and flexibility in the face of persistent geopolitical tensions in the region, with the country's GDP growing by 2.7 per cent in the first quarter of 2025, marking an increase of 0.5 percentage points compared to the same period last year. The CBJ projects the economy will maintain this growth rate throughout the year, buoyed by strengthening domestic and external demand. Economic indicators confirm the strength of monetary stability in the Kingdom, the bank said, adding that its currency reserves surpassed $22 billion at the end of June, sufficient to cover 8.4 months of the country's imports of goods and services. Inflation has remained steady, averaging 2 per cent during the first half of the year, with full-year projections hovering around 2.2 per cent, CBJ said. 'This price stability supports consumer purchasing power and bolsters the competitiveness of the national economy.' The CBJ said that the banking sector continues to post strong figures. Customer deposits at local banks rose by 7.1 per cent year-on-year, reaching JD48.2 billion by the end of June. Credit facilities extended by banks grew by 3.9 per cent to JD35.5 billion over the same period. Financial soundness indicators reflect a robust banking system, with the capital adequacy ratio standing at 18.0 per cent, 'among the highest in the region,' the bank said, adding that the legal liquidity ratio reached 144.7 per cent, well above the CBJ's required minimum of 100 per cent. The CBJ said that the external sector also reported positive performance, with tourism revenues increasing by 11.9 per cent in the first half of the year to reach $3.7 billion compared to the same period in 2024. Total exports saw a significant rise of 8.6 per cent during the first five months of 2025, totalling $5.6 billion, the CBJ said. © Copyright The Jordan Times. All rights reserved.
