Willcox takes out world No.1 Ferreira in huge Margs upset

Perth Now20-05-2025
Jacob Willcox returned to Margaret River with one thing in mind following the disappointment of being cut from surfing's elite tour at his home event last year: Redemption.
At Main Break on Tuesday, the local qualifier took another step towards his ultimate goal of re-qualifying for the World Surf League's championship tour, beating current world No.1 and 2019 world champion Italo Ferreira in pumping 8-10ft conditions.
Willcox, a Margaret River local who grew up surfing the region's famous breaks, had to do it the hard way just to earn his spot in the field, winning last week's trials.
And after a nightmare opening round defeat to Ferreira, in which his posted just two scores of 2.50, Willcox was left questioning everything, laid up in bed with a head cold for two lay days, before coming out firing in the elimination round earlier on Tuesday and saving his best for a rematch with the Brazilian powerhouse.
'After this event last year I felt so disappointed, so heartbroken,' he said.
'Redemption: that was my one word for this week. I just want to compete and hopefully this result leads me into a good campaign on the challenger series. I'm so fired up to get back on the tour.'
Willcox looked a different surfer to Saturday's rough start, putting it down in part to an equipment switch.
He scored an excellent 8.33 for a wave that included sticking a massive vertical drop, three turns and a tough finish, adding to a solid 6.67 to post a 15.00 two-wave total.
Ferreira put up a 6.87 and 6.00 for a 12.87 total but was always chasing and couldn't find the big number he needed.
'I had such a shocker that first day, I rode the wrong board and couldn't even get off the bottom so it felt good just to get out there on the right board and do a turn,' Willcox said.
'I was stoked to surf against Italo, he is one of my favourite surfers and so amazing to watch out there, it got me so fired up. To beat him was epic.
'I'm knackered after those two heats, it's pretty draining conditions with a lot of swell. I've been sick as a dog the past few days. It's good just to be back in the water.' Jacob Willcox of Australia surfs in Heat 9. Credit: Cait Miers / World Surf League
The 27-year-old has now surfed the Margaret River Pro eight times but never previously made it to the round of 16.
With his best result at home already locked in, he hopes local knowledge can help him land a few more upsets.
'I feel like it's almost anyone's game out there, you just need to be able to pick the good waves and being a local definitely helps,' he said.
'It's cool to be able to compete against these guys in the big event and beat them. I know I can do it, sometimes it just happen how you think.
'It's a blur out there when you ride out of that end section but you can hear everyone getting behind you. I'm so happy to have an event here at home to compete in front of all my friends and family.' WSL Champion Italo Ferreira has been knocked out. Credit: Beatriz Ryder / World Surf League
Willcox took six months away from competition to re-group following the disappointment of being cut from his rookie year on the CT and failing to re-qualify on the CS. He admitted feeling burnt out after his decade-long attempt to make it on surfing's elite tour, only to have it ripped away at the mid-season cut, only a few months in.
'I'm just trying to put some good heats together and set myself up for a good year,' he said. 'I've had about six months off with no competing and I feel like that's given me a lot of energy to come into this year pretty hungry.'

Sydney FC in shock swoop for Bayern Munich legend Thomas Müller

Sydney FC are in talks to sign former Bayern Munich legend Thomas Müller in what could be one of the greatest marquee coups in A-League history. Müller, 35, is a free agent after departing Bayern, the only club he has ever played for, at the end of the recent FIFA Club World Cup after more than 500 games across nearly two decades, and is seeking a new experience to round out his career. Though reports have linked him to Major League Soccer in the United States – and some have gone as far as to say he has already made up his mind – this masthead can reveal that the Sky Blues have been in discussions with Müller and his representatives for several weeks about an A-League switch, and that they remain an outside chance of convincing him. An answer either way is expected within the next week or so, with the club recently informed that they are one of the final two options he is considering. The other is in MLS, and that is believed to be his favoured option, but Sydney are still in with a shot. Sources with knowledge of negotiations, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said Müller – a 13-time Bundesliga winner, two-time UEFA Champions League winner, and part of the Germany squad that won the 2014 World Cup – had been impressed with the pitch made to him by Sydney FC. Two of his former teammates are already at the club: Brazilian star Douglas Costa, who he played with between 2015 and 2017 at Bayern Munich, and the retired Alexander Baumjohann, Sydney's head of player management who spent a year on the books at Germany's biggest club and is believed to be spearheading the attempt to sign him. His recruitment would be an enormous boon for the financially stricken A-League and for Sydney FC, whose board has undergone an off-season restructure with the departure of long-time chairman Scott Barlow. Jan Voss, a German-Australian business executive and president of Ferrari Australasia, has replaced Barlow as chairman, while the club's foundation chairman Walter Bugno – hugely influential in their 'Bling FC' era – is back on the board as a director. No A-League club – not even the Sky Blues – can compete with the wages that Müller would be able to attract in the US or elsewhere; like any high-profile player who decides to move to Australia, it would involve him prioritising the low-key lifestyle he would be able to enjoy in Sydney over money.

Meet the tiny 12-year-old set to debut at pro-surfing's heaviest wave

Twelve-year-old Tahitian local Kelia Mehani Gallina will become the youngest pro-surfer in competitive history when she debuts next month at Teahupo'o - the heaviest wave on the championship tour. Gallina - whose self-styled 'Miss Teahupo'o' Instagram page has already gained a significant following - booked a Tahiti Pro showdown with Australian title hope and world No.1 Molly Picklum by taking out the local trials earlier this week. Gallina's victory secured the first of two women's wildcards to surf the Teahupo'o event from August 7, with the youngster's 13th birthday falling a few days later on August 10. Gallina first surfed Teahupo'o - which loosely translates to 'place of skulls' in the local dialect - when she was just four years old and has regularly pushed herself into waves twice her size at the feared break. 'I have no words. I'm so happy. I can't believe it,' Gallina said on the WSL broadcast, adding that a first-up Tahiti Pro heat against Picklum is a dream come true. Gallina's Instagram page - run by her father Ryan - chronicles a childhood spent navigating the left-hand barrels over infamously shallow reef. In an interview with Stab Magazine following Gallina breakthrough Tahiti trials win, her father said: 'when Kelia was only a little girl, she was always the only girl out there [surfing Teahupo'o],' in reference to the WSL mothballing the women's championship event from 2006 to 2022 because it was deemed too dangerous for them. Since the women's event returned to Teahupo'o, women's surfing in waves of consequence on the WCT has shot to unprecedented levels.
