ITV period drama 'like spoonful after spoonful of splendid jam' streaming for free now
Crafted by ITV, Home Fires stands as a British period drama that unfolded across two series. Conceived by Simon Block and jointly helmed by Robert Quinn and Bruce Goodinson, this 2015 historical television programme chronicles the experiences of Great Paxford Women's Institute members on the Home Front throughout World War II.
Drawing inspiration from Julie Summers' novel Jambusters, Home Fires unfolds in Great Paxford, a fictitious rural Cheshire village, and centres on the women's experiences as they face wartime adversity, limited supplies, and personal challenges during the conflict whilst discovering innovative methods to discover resilience and meaning through collective endeavours.
The programme's inaugural series spans from September 1939 through to early 1940, whilst its second series commences during the summer of 1940. Featuring an outstanding ensemble cast predominantly comprising women such as Francesca Annis, Samantha Bond, Leanne Best, Fenella Woolgar, and Claire Rushbrook, Home Fires attracted an average audience of 6.2 million throughout its debut series. The programme's second run achieved comparable triumph.
Presently accessible to watch without charge on UKTV, the period drama maintains a flawless 100 per cent critics approval score on review aggregation platform Rotten Tomatoes, where it garnered glowing reviews, with one reviewer noting: "Home Fires offers British drama that's as satisfying as a warm cup of tea."
As per the Express, another critic praised the series, saying: "It's more uplifting and affirming than challenging or surprising, and it is handsomely made with convincing period detail and a fine cast delivering top notch performances." Meanwhile, a third reviewer kept it simple, declaring: "This series is spoonful after spoonful of splendid jam."
Viewers were equally smitten with the wartime drama, with one devotee gushing: "The name being Home Fires on Masterpiece, it doesn't lie about the Masterpiece part." Another fan raved: "Loved, loved, loved this series! ! Just heard they are doing a second season, hurray! Just good, clean TV about regular people dealing with irregular circumstances. Please continue the series."
A third enthusiast observed: "The show follows several women and the challenges they face in supporting the war effort. Some of the story lines are more soap opera than others, but I am enjoying every minute." One admirer penned: "One of the many really good shows from England, Australia and New Zealand. Honest look at how life was during the Second World War. Shows the effect on the families and those left behind when the 'boys' go off to war."
Just days following the airing of series two's final episode, ITV delivered crushing news that the programme wouldn't be returning for a third run - despite its triumph and leaving devoted fans absolutely gutted, who flocked to Change.org launching a campaign to resurrect the series, which gathered over 50,000 signatures.
An ITV spokesperson announced: "The ITV commissioning team continues to refresh the channel's drama portfolio, hence the decision not to commission a further new series."
Despite a spirited campaign, efforts to save the show fell flat, leading to its official axing in 2016.

Emmerdale fans hit out at dullest villain in soap's history
Meanwhile, he then found Owen Michaels (Simon Haines) unconscious during a home visit, but left him to die, as he came up with a plan to attempt to frame him for Nate's death. Instead of calling an ambulance and getting help, John wrote a note on Owen's laptop, 'confessing' he killed Nate. 8 Most Iconic British Soap Characters of All Time Emmerdale fans slam 'boring' villain John Sugden on ITV soap But viewers don't seem too impressed with John's tactics as many on Reddit claim he is the 'most boring 'serial killer/villain' they've ever seen'. Someone's post on the r/emmerdale subreddit said: 'I know this sounds super morbid but c'mon, am I alone in thinking we've been waiting ages for him to get really 'villian-y'?!' They added: 'I've been waiting for this man to go full-on psycho, otherwise, we've just suffered along with this boring story for close to a year now to watch him squirrel around the village with rolled up sleeves 24/7, act like a weirdo, and talk about how great of a medic he is??' This fan agreed: 'You nailed it! He's BORING.' Another wrote: 'I think he bores himself, hence the need to feel that high of bringing folks to the brink of death and then playing hero to revive them.' One person commented: 'His rolled up sleeves are the most interesting thing about him.' While this profile responded: 'Yes, he is so boring easily the dullest and most uninteresting serial killer in soap history.' However, some disagree and think John is an 'interesting' character. This viewer explained: 'The weird need to be a saviour, the fact you can tell he feels guilty about his actions (especially Nate) yet can't bring himself not to do it again or hand himself in. Soaps That Have Won the Most Awards 'I've enjoyed the slow burn and seeing how his actions have managed to go undetected so far. 'I'm very much looking forward to seeing the truth come out and how he reacts and how the rest of the village will react too.' Also in agreement, one viewer shared: 'I enjoy him! He's a quieter, calmer, different kind of villain'. They revealed the character is better than the 'usual' sort of villain the soap has become known for, 'with dramatic murders, unrealistic kidnappings, and over-the-top hostage situations'. The fan continued: 'Of course I say this and John's probably going to kidnap somebody at some point. Hopefully not though. 'But I enjoy that they're playing it like he's just a desperate guy who does kind of bad things for selfish reasons. I think the hero complex angle is quite fresh for soap. 'We are getting a decent insight into his guilt and feelings and such through the helpline calls and just his whole haunted demeanor, which adds to the complexity. I guess it's just not that engaging for some people. 'Maybe it's missing a bit of backstory to tell us why he's like this, I'm not sure.' Recommended reading: This person, who is also a fan of John, said: 'I like him. He's not written or acted like your typical soap villain, which makes him interesting to me. I think if he hadn't been paired with Aaron - who brings down every character he's tied to - his reception would have been better.' Someone else who enjoys John's character chimed in: 'I like him, think he's quite nuanced and layered - hate him but that's what makes him enjoyable.' How do you feel about John Sugden on Emmerdale? Let us know if you think he's a good soap villain in the comments below.

Josie Gibson's major new role at ITV as This Morning presenter takes on personal project
Josie Gibson will soon be seen on ITV's This Morning as she stands in for Cat Deeley and Ben Shephard while they take a break this summer. She'll also star in an ITV show. This Morning's Josie Gibson is set to transform her Somerset abode into the "dream home" she's always envisioned in an upcoming ITV series. The 40 year old television personality, who rose to fame after clinching victory on Big Brother in 2010, has since presented a variety of shows including Channel 5's Around The World In First Class and Channel 4's Ultimate Christmas Gift Guide With Josie Gibson. In addition to finishing fourth in I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! in 2023, Gibson has become a familiar face on This Morning and is gearing up to cover for Cat Deeley and Ben Shephard during their summer hiatus. Hailing from Bristol, the TV favourite is embarking on a project to revamp her Somerset residence with an emphasis on sustainable living. Her plans include installing a subterranean heat pump, cultivating her own produce, and establishing beehives on the property. Josie expressed her aspirations: "My dream is to build a house as eco and luxurious as possible, where you are immersed in the sanctuary of nature." She further elaborated on her vision: "I want to use the acres of land to try my best to have a little small holding. I want bees, birds, badgers to all live in harmony." However, she also voiced concerns about the project: "Though I'm becoming increasingly concerned that my harmonious dream is slowly turning into a construction nightmare. I can't wait to bring the audience along on this journey with me." Gibson won't be tackling the renovation solo; she'll be drawing on the expertise of her brothers, Josh and Charlie, who are scrap metal traders, and her cousin Tom. Together, they aim to construct a haven complete with an on-site gym, a walk-in wardrobe, and tinted windows. The seven-part series, Josie Gibson's Big Country Build, is set to air across ITV1, STV, ITVX and STV Player in 2026. Katie Rawcliffe, Director of entertainment and daytime for ITV, commented: "She's done a stint in the jungle and tackled all manner of outlandish tasks on This Morning, but our audiences are about to see a completely new side to Josie Gibson as she embraces country life and takes sustainable living to a whole new level." In a recent interview, Josie opened up about the challenges of juggling motherhood with her career. She said: "I often suffer from mum guilt. I beat myself up that I'm not with Reggie all the time because you never get that time back with your kid." Despite the tough choices she faced while forging her path in television, Josie now enjoys a more harmonious work-life balance. Reflecting on her journey, she revealed: "There was a point where I worked a lot - far too much - but I needed to get where I wanted to be, and I sacrificed time with him and that was really sad. These days, I have much more of a balance."
