Louisiana waters may contain brain-eating amoebas The Louisiana Department of Health has, in rare cases, discovered the Naegleria fowleri amoeba in Louisiana water systems. Naegleria fowleri, often called the "brain-eating amoeba," is a one-celled organism that thrives in warm freshwater lakes, rivers and hot springs, says the CDC. In very rare cases, this brain-eating amoeba has been found in poorly maintained swimming pools, splash pads, other recreational venues and even in tap water. Extreme heat forecasted for Louisiana. What to know about heat warnings and advisories The U.S. National Weather Service has issued extreme heat warnings and heat advisories for regions of Louisiana. An extreme heat warning was in effect from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 23, for portions of Northeast and Southeast Louisiana, as dangerously hot conditions with heat index values between 111 and 115 expected, according to the National Weather Service. Bossier City man dies after being found unresponsive in Shreveport lodge pool The Caddo Parish Coroner's Office has identified a Bossier City man who was found unresponsive in the Shreveport Elks Lodge pool Sunday, July 20. Texas flags lowered to honor Hill Country flood victims
AUSTIN (KFDX/KJTL) — Governor Greg Abbott has ordered that flags across the state of Texas be lowered to half-staff in honor of those lost in the Hill Country floods over the holiday weekend. RELATED | Texas Roadhouse to donate profits to Kerr County Flood Relief 'In heartfelt remembrance of those whose lives were tragically lost in the recent floods, I ordered Texas flags across the state to be lowered to half-staff,' Abbott said. 'Cecilia and I continue to pray for their loved ones as they grieve this unimaginable loss and urge all Texans to continue praying for all impacted by this devastation. Texas stands united in mourning and in our resolve to support those who strive to heal and recover. May God bring comfort to every family affected and strength to the thousands of first responders still working on the ground.' Governor Abbott said that all businesses, individuals and other entities are to fly their flags at half-staff until sunrise on Monday, July 14. Texoma prepares for severe weather: Possible wind gusts and hail ahead
TEXOMA (KFDX/KJTL) – Significant severe weather is expected to take place in the Texoma area today, Sunday, June 8. The timing is from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., but could be as early as 2 p.m. Significant damaging wind gusts (80-100 mph), extremely large hail (baseball-sized and larger), and a few tornadoes will all be possible. There is potential for a strong tornado and softball-sized hail in the afternoon. Still, the most likely concern is significant damaging wind gusts, leading to widespread wind damage and power outages across the areas hit hardest. If we don't see a single tornado, this will still likely be our most significant severe weather event of the season, just because of the hurricane-force wind gusts. Between 4 p.m. and 10 p.m., we may have a couple of supercells over Texoma. Conditions will favor these supercells to be capable of all hazards. These cells will eventually congeal into a system that pushes to the east, still capable of withstanding all hazards and significant wind damage. While these early cells are occurring, more supercells develop across the panhandle. The cells will congeal into a system that will sweep across most of Texoma from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. All hazards are possible with this system, but the potential for 80-100 mph winds will be the greatest concern.
