MUMBAI: In a move reminiscent of Hindenburg going short on Adani Group, US-based financial researcher Viceroy Research said Wednesday it was "shorting" the debt stack of metal tycoon Anil Agarwal-controlled Vedanta Resources, the UK-based parent of Mumbai-listed miner Vedanta, as it believes the entire group structure is 'financially unsustainable', operationally compromised, 'a house of cards', poses severe risks to creditors, and 'resembles a Ponzi scheme'. The company dismissed the report as "a malicious combination of selective misinformation and baseless allegations." The stock of Vedanta subsidiary Hindustan Zinc also saw a similar trend: In mid-session it crashed nearly 5% to Rs 415 and then recovered some ground by the close of the session to finally settle at Rs 425, down 2.6%. Betting on a correction in the prices of the company's securities, Viceroy's report said, 'Our thesis rests on a simple but critical dynamic: Vedanta Resources is a 'parasite' holding company with no significant operations of its own, propped up entirely by cash extracted from its dying 'host', Vedanta.' This, Viceroy added, has forced the Indian company to take on increasing leverage and deplete its cash reserves. 'This looting erodes the fundamental value of Vedanta, which constitutes the primary collateral for Vedanta Resources' own creditors.' Why no probe against theft complainant: Seeman
Madurai: Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) leader Seeman on Wednesday evening led a protest at Thiruppuvanam in Sivaganga condemning the custodial death of temple security guard B Ajith Kumar. He demanded to know why no action or investigation had been initiated against J P Nikitha, the complainant in the gold jewellery theft case in which Ajith was interrogated as a suspect and later died. Seeman paid tribute to Ajith's portrait at his home and met his mother B Malathy and brother B Naveen Kumar. "It has come to light that there have been numerous fraud complaints and pending cases against Nikitha. The tainted policemen's wives have said that they only followed their higher officials. Why are they not being investigated," he asked. He wanted to know whether the gold jewellery as given in the complaint by Nikitha has been recovered. "Getting permission for a protest by NTK comes with such a huge process and hurdles whereas no procedures were followed when Ajith was questioned," he said. State to bring law against religious conversion: Min
Mumbai: Revenue minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule told the state assembly on Wednesday that the govt was planning a strong law against religious conversion. He also announced a committee headed by a divisional commissioner to examine complaints of unauthorised churches in Nandurbar district and proceed with demolishing those found illegal. "We will bring in a strong law and so no one will dare to undertake religious conversion," said Bawankule, amid complaints by BJP MLAs about "forcible conversions to Christianity" in the tribal belt of Dhule and Nandurbar. Meanwhile, tribal welfare minister Sanjay Uike said his department would try to bring the tribals who converted to Christianity back into the fold. "We will remind them of the benefits they have gained with their adivasi caste status," he said. The issue was raised in the assembly by BJP MLA Anup Agarwal who complained about "forcible conversions" of Bhil tribals in Nandurbar to Christianity by offering inducements including medical aid. He said there were 199 unauthorised churches in Navapur taluka according to an RTI response. "When will the illegal churches be demolished and when will the state bring a law to prevent forcible conversions?" he asked.
