MLB power rankings: Red-hot Astros look unstoppable as All-Star break nears

Perhaps the Houston Astros truly are unstoppable. After dispatching two of their bedrock players in Alex Bregman and Kyle Tucker last winter, they got off to an appropriately middling start that suggested their revamped lineup might have, finally, lost too many pieces from their championships in 2017 and 2022. Yet look who's nearly atop USA TODAY Sports' power rankings. Despite losing All-Star shortstop Jeremy Peña to a rib injury this week, and missing slugger Yordan Alvarez for almost all of the first half, the Astros continued their stunning roll toward the break, dealing the Los Angeles Dodgers their worst loss ever at Chavez Ravine as if it were the late 2010s all over again. And after a road sweep of their old adversaries, the team many love to hate has won 24 of its last 32 games, completing a startling five-week rise from No. 12 to No. 2 inpower rankings the rankings. With All-Star ace Hunter Brown and should-be All-Star Framber Valdez fronting the rotation, the club may put the American League West to bed by the trade deadline. Soon enough, they may have the No. 1 Tigers in their sights. A look at our updated rankings: 1. Detroit Tigers (-) 2. Houston Astros (+1) 3. Los Angeles Dodgers (-1) 4. Chicago Cubs (-) 5. Cubs' Seiya Suzuki Makes Clear 6-Word Statement on All-Star Game Snub Amid Fan Protests

Cubs' Seiya Suzuki Makes Clear 6-Word Statement on All-Star Game Snub Amid Fan Protests originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Major League Baseball announced its full 2025 All-Star Game selections on Sunday, a news update that had fans howling for change as they attempted to reconcile seeing rosters without many of their favorite local and national players. Advertisement One of the most glaring omissions was Chicago Cubs right fielder Seiya Suzuki, who has recorded a batting average of .263 on the season so far along with 25 home runs and 77 runs batted in with six games to go in the first half of the 2025 season. Suzuki was not chosen for this year's All-Star team causing fans to lash out on social media. On Sunday, Suzuki made a direct six-word statement on the situation that showed his seriousness. "I'm sorry, but my plans are full," the Japanese MLB star said on Sunday through a translator. Advertisement Suzuki was born in Tokyo in 1994 and was signed away from the Hiroshima Toyo Carp baseball club from the Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) league to a five-year, $85 million contract in March 2022. The Cubs' primary designated hitter, he leads MLB in runs batted in and is on pace for what would be an incredible 50 home run, 150 RBI season. "It was a surprise (that Suzuki was left off the team)," WBEZ Chicago radio station sports contributor Cheryl Rate-Stout said to Axios about the Cubs slugger. "He could still be added if any other players drop out," she added, an assertion that Suzuki appeared to put to rest with his comments on Sunday. Seahawks news: O-line questions, breaking on defense, more for Cardinals fans

We check in with the Cardinals' NFC West rival Seahawks to see what has been going on recently. Another week in the NFL offseason, so it is time to see what has been going on with the Arizona Cardinals' NFC West rivals — the Los Angeles Rams, San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks. What is new as we await the start of training camps later this month? Below are a few stories from the last week that Cardinals fans should know about the Seahawks. Bouceback year for Kenneth Walker? After a 1,000-yard rookie season in 2022, Walker's production has declined for two consecutive years. Last year, he played in only 11 games and had 573 rushing yards. PFF expects a bounceback year and a return to 1,000 yards. Questions on the O-line Every team enters the summer with questions. One of the biggest questions is the Seahawks' offensive line. But that should surprise nobody. White throwbacks coming The Cardinals never wear throwback jerseys. The Seahawks will, though, this year. They will wear throwback white unis sometime this season. Breakout year from defense expected The Seahawks were bad defensively most of last season but then played much better in the second half of the season. The Athletic expects the defensive to break out in its second season under head coach Mike Macdonald. Surprising surprise player Every team has offseason surprises. For the Seahawks, it was guard Anthony Bradford. He is not expected to start on the offensive line, but he could push for a starting job in camp.
