Teachers to be relieved of midday meal duty
Burden of non-teaching, non-educational assignments on teachers was said to be one of the main reasons for the dip in passing percentage in SSLC examination and there was demand from the teachers to reduce this burden.
The passing percentage in Dharwad district has come down to 67.6% in 2025 from 72.6% in 2024.
The school education and literacy department has issued a circular on July 1, 2025 barring the officials of education department and other departments from summoning orally or in writing, the teachers for non-teaching, non-educational works during school hours.
The circular even says that no competitive examinations will be held in schools during working days.
Taking a cue from the education department's circular, district minister Santosh Lad held a meeting of officers from school education and literacy department in the district and discussed measures to enhance the quality of education and ensure that teachers are consistently present in schools to discharge their duties.

Lad stated that NGOs distributing mid-day meals in the district must also take responsibility for supplying eggs and bananas to students. If they fail to do so, alternative arrangements will be made immediately, he said and asked the NGOs concerned to respond to his suggestion.
"Currently, teachers are procuring eggs and bananas from the market and distributing them to students, which is consuming valuable teaching time and adding pressure.
This is negatively impacting the quality of education," he said.
"Teachers' issues must be addressed and resolved. The DDPI and BEOs must actively work to resolve such problems and report to the DC and the ZP CEO," the minister said.
Deputy commissioner Divya Prabhu said that the current system of distributing eggs and bananas separately in schools has increased the workload for teachers and headmasters, disrupting effective classroom teaching.
A lot of time is spent on distributing and recording data related to the supply of these items. Even minor delays or issues in implementing the scheme are being blamed on the teachers, which is leading to undue stress for them.
A formal appeal has been made regarding this, as it is affecting the quality of learning. Teachers should not be held accountable for minor errors in distribution. Immediate steps are required in this regard, Divya said.
Representatives from Iskcon and Adamya Chetana, the two organisations currently distributing mid-day meals in the district, said that they would discuss the matter with their trust heads and respond.

The remarks faced criticism from almost all quarters, including Karnataka IAS Officers' Association. Ravikumar subsequently issued a clarification denying any inappropriate intentions, explaining he merely meant to highlight the chief secretary's busy schedule. In his petition, Ravikumar claimed the proceedings initiated against him were politically influenced. According to him, the complainant is neither a victim nor an aggrieved person, and has lodged a complaint only to please their political masters, projecting his comments in a different context altogether. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Secure your family's future! China imposes anti-dumping duties on European brandy as trade tensions rise
China on Friday imposed anti-dumping duties on European brandy, most notably cognac produced in France, as trade tensions between Beijing and United States allies continue to rise. The tariffs, effective on Saturday, will range from 27.7% to 34.9%, China's Commerce Ministry said. They are to be in place for five years and will not be applied retroactively. The announcement came during a European visit by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi aimed at ironing out trade differences. Wang was set to visit Paris after stops in Brussels and Berlin. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Algeria: Bathroom Remodeling Trends in 2025 May Surprise You Bathroom Remodeling | Search Ads Search Now Undo The anti-dumping duties are the result of a probe China launched last year into European cognac, after the European Union undertook a probe into Chinese electric vehicles subsidies. "The investigative authority finally ruled that the dumping of related imported brandy from the EU has existed," read a statement by China's Commerce Ministry. "The domestic brandy industry faces a material threat of damage, and there is a causal relationship between the dumping and the substantial damage threat." Live Events Besides cognac, China has also launched investigations into European pork and dairy products. The brandy probe was the first and targeted mainly French makers of cognac and similar spirits such as Armagnac. China initially announced provisional tariffs of 30.6% to 39% on French cognac producer Remy Martin and other European brandies after a majority of E.U. countries approved duties on electric vehicles made in China. Wang was set to meet his French counterpart, Jean-Noel Barrot, later Friday in Paris. His European tour comes ahead of a China-EU summit to be focused on trade later this month in Beijing.

"The state government has assured police will not issue e-challans till the end of this month for minor violations like parking or stopping at fuel pumps etc. The state government has also assured it would raise the issue of compulsory requirement of cleaner or assistant for heavy vehicles with the Union government," Shinde said. Live Events Despite issues of manpower shortage, truckers are being fined for not having cleaners, he added. "The cancellation of wrongly issued e-challans was one of our major demands. The Maharashtra government has agreed to issue a notification regarding this. The government also assured it would consider our demand to cancel challans that are more than 90 days old," Shinde informed. Transport association functionaries said the government has agreed to expand the committee headed by the Maharashtra Transport Commissioner to include more members from truckers' groups. Leaders of transport associations claimed the strike received a mixed response over the last three days, adding that a large number of trucks and goods vehicles in Navi Mumbai, Mumbai, Thane, Pune etc went off the roads during this period.
