It has been a long offseason for the Kansas City Chiefs. After coming up short in their quest for a third straight Super Bowl title, the team is focused on returning to the big game for a fourth consecutive year.

Last season ended in disappointment after a 40-22 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. Now the Chiefs are locked in on redemption.
One of the most consistent players during Kansas City's run of success has been kicker Harrison Butker. The 29-year-old former Georgia Tech standout was a seventh-round pick by the Carolina Panthers in 2017 but never played a game for them. Just 13 days after being waived, the Chiefs picked him up, and he's been their kicker ever since.
As the 2025 season approaches, Butker has made his intentions clear. In a lighthearted '2025 Roll Call' photo shared by the team, he was asked to write his goal for the upcoming season. His answer was simple: 'win the Super Bowl.'

Butker already has three Super Bowl rings and was the NFL's scoring leader in 2019. He made the PFWA All-Rookie team in 2017 and holds several NFL records.
He owns the record for the longest field goal made in a Super Bowl, a 57-yarder in Super Bowl LVIII. He also has the most career field goals in Super Bowl history with nine. His 38 field goals as a rookie in 2017 remain a single-season record for a first-year kicker.

In August 2024, Butker signed a four-year, $25.6 million contract extension. Unfortunately, he suffered an injury in practice and missed a month of the season. He returned in December but was rarely used, missing a field goal against Cleveland in his only attempt.

Butker was active for Super Bowl LIX against the Eagles but wasn't called on for a field goal or extra point attempt.
Kansas City opens the 2025 regular season on September 5 in São Paulo, Brazil, against the Los Angeles Chargers.

George Karlaftis, Kansas City Chiefs agree to 4-year extension per reports

Add another big-money extension to the list for the Kansas City Chiefs this offseason. The reigning AFC champions made Super Bowl 59 last season in no small part thanks to their defense. Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo led a unit that finished the year fourth in points allowed and gave up more than 25 points just five times. Less than a week after rewarding one of their top young talents on the offensive line - guard Trey Smith - the team handed out a long-term extension to one of its best young players on defense: edge rusher George Karlaftis. T.J. Watt contract winners and losers: Teammate hurt, peer helped by $123M extension? Kansas City and Karlaftis agreed to a four-year, $93 million extension with $62 million guaranteed, per multiple reports. BREAKING: The #Chiefs and standout DE George Karlaftis are finalizing a 4-year extension, per multiple securing Pro Bowl G Trey Smith to a 4-year extension, the Chiefs do the same with Karlaftis — who recorded 24.5 sacks during his first three NFL seasons. Kansas City drafted Karlaftis in the first round, No. 30 overall in the 2022 NFL Draft. He started all 17 games at edge rusher as a rookie in 2022 and hasn't missed a game since. Through his first three seasons, Karlaftis has 24.5 sacks, including a career-high 10.5 in 2023. He led the Chiefs in sacks with 8.0 last season and finished tied for third league-wide in quarterback hits with 28. Only Denver's Zach Allen (40) and Cincinnati's Trey Hendrickson (36) had more. OPINION: Former NFLPA head Lloyd Howell was sunk by his own secrets George Karlaftis contract details Karlaftis and the Chiefs agreed to a four-year extension worth $92 million, giving him an average annual value (AAV) of $22 million. He could get up to $23.25 million per season if he hits specific incentives. That standard AAV puts him 11th league-wide among edge rushers behind Minnesota's Andrew Van Ginkel ($23 million) and ahead of Hendrickson ($21 million). If he meets all those incentives, he'll go up to 10th in AAV. This makes him the second-highest paid defender on the Chiefs defense by AAV behind defensive tackle Chris Jones. That could change if the team decides to sign fellow 2022 NFL Draft first-round pick Trent McDuffie to a long-term extension. Like Karlaftis, he's entering the second-to-last year of his rookie contract. Kansas City has picked up McDuffie's fifth-year option so he will be with the team through 2026 at the least.

Chiefs, George Karlaftis agree to 4-year, $93 million extension: Sources

The Kansas City Chiefs and edge rusher George Karlaftis agreed to a four-year, $93 million extension that includes $62 million guaranteed, league sources said. Karlaftis was entering the final year of his rookie contract, and the Chiefs previously picked up his fifth-year option in April. Now, he will stay with the team through the 2030 season. Advertisement Kansas City selected Karlaftis, 24, with the No. 30 pick of the 2022 NFL Draft out of Purdue. He has 115 tackles, 24 1/2 sacks, 24 tackles for loss and 15 passes defended through 49 regular-season games over the past three years. He's added 36 tackles, eight sacks and four tackles for loss in the playoffs each season and won two Super Bowls with the Chiefs. Karlaftis is the second Chief to receive an extension this week after Pro Bowl guard Trey Smith signed a four-year contract extension Tuesday worth $94 million. Smith's deal included $70 million guaranteed and made him the highest-paid player at his position. The Chiefs locked him down hours before the NFL's deadline for franchise-tagged players to sign long-term extensions. Smith skipped all of the Chiefs' OTAs in March but was in attendance for June's mandatory minicamp amid contract negotiations. His presence is crucial as the Chiefs hope to squash the blocking issues on their offensive line that cost them in Super Bowl LIX. The Chiefs will report to training camp Monday at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph, Mo. ESPN was first to report news of Karlaftis' extension.
