NASA May Have Found The Fastest Planetary System We've Ever Seen
Evidence suggests these objects are a high-velocity star and its accompanying exoplanet, a new study reports. If that's confirmed, it would set a new record as the fastest-moving exoplanet system known to science.
Stars are on the move throughout the Milky Way, typically at a few hundred thousand miles per hour. Our Solar System's average velocity through the galaxy's Orion Arm is 450,000 miles per hour, or 200 kilometers per second.
These two objects are careening twice as fast, at a speed of at least 1.2 million miles per hour (540 kilometers per second).
"We think this is a so-called super-Neptune world orbiting a low-mass star at a distance that would lie between the orbits of Venus and Earth if it were in our solar system," says astronomer Sean Terry from the University of Maryland and NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center.
"If so, it will be the first planet ever found orbiting a hypervelocity star."
The two objects were initially found in 2011, as researchers hunted exoplanets in data from Microlensing Observations in Astrophysics (MOA), a project based at the University of Canterbury Mount John Observatory in New Zealand.
Gravitational microlensing is a phenomenon that occurs when a massive celestial object is near the line of sight that runs between a distant observer on one side and a distant star on the other.
Since mass warps spacetime, the star's light curves as it passes through the object's distorted spacetime on its way to the observer. If all three points align closely enough, the bent spacetime around the middle object acts as a lens for the observer, amplifying starlight.
Researchers studying MOA data in 2011 determined the objects' relative mass – one is 2,300 times more massive than the other – but the actual mass of both remained unclear.
"Determining the mass ratio is easy," says astronomer David Bennett from the University of Maryland and NASA Goddard, who worked on the 2011 and 2025 studies. "It's much more difficult to calculate their actual masses."
Finding an object's actual mass requires knowing its distance, in a similar way to how moving a magnifying glass closer and farther distorts the apparent size of objects without altering the differences between them.
Bennett and his colleagues in 2011 floated two scenarios for the pair of objects: Either it's a star and a planet, with the star slightly less massive than our sun and the planet 29 times more massive than Earth, or it's a less distant rogue super- Jupiter towing a moon smaller than Earth.
For the new study, researchers sought to find out what these two are and what they're up to more than a decade later – using data from the Keck Observatory in Hawaii and the European Space Agency's Gaia satellite.
They settled on a star system roughly 24,000 light-years away from Earth as the likeliest candidate. It's in the Milky Way's bright, densely populated central bulge of stars, the galactic downtown to our distant suburban perch.
Based on its distance from the 2011 signal, the team calculated how fast the star is moving, finding its speed is more than twice that of our sun.
That only accounts for its two-dimensional motion as seen from Earth, though. It could also be moving toward or away from us, which is harder to detect from our vantage, yet would mean it's moving even faster.
That suggests this star might be fast enough to surpass the Milky Way's escape velocity, thought to be around 550 to 600 kilometers per second.
If so, then it's headed for intergalactic space – although not for millions of years, since the Milky Way is huge and it's still pretty much right in the middle.
While this solar system fits the profile of the 2011 objects, only time will tell.
"To be certain the newly identified star is part of the system that caused the 2011 signal, we'd like to look again in another year and see if it moves the right amount and in the right direction," Bennett says.
If the star just remains stationary, then we'll know it is not contributing to the signal-causing system.
"That would mean the rogue planet and exomoon model is favored," explains astrophysicist Aparna Bhattacharya from the University of Maryland and NASA Goddard.
The study was published in The Astronomical Journal.

Jonathan Pratt, senior bureau official for African Affairs at the U.S. State Department, and Abdoul Wahab Haidara, ambassador of Senegal to the United States, also participated in the event. "Senegal's adherence to the Artemis Accords reflects our commitment to a multilateral, responsible, and transparent approach to space," Kairé said. "This signature marks a meaningful step in our space diplomacy and in our ambition to contribute to the peaceful exploration of outer space." Astronomers from Senegal have supported NASA missions by participating in multiple observations when asteroids or planets pass in front of stars, casting shadows on Earth. In 2021, NASA also collaborated with Kairé and a group of astronomers for a ground observation campaign in Senegal. As the asteroid Orus passed in front of a star, they positioned telescopes along the path of the asteroid's shadow to estimate its shape and size. NASA's Lucy spacecraft will approach Orus in 2028, as part of its mission to explore Jupiter's Trojan asteroids. More countries are expected to sign the Artemis Accords in the months and years ahead, as NASA continues its work to establish a safe, peaceful and prosperous future in space, the release said.

Rocket Lab has increasingly been in the news over mounting anticipation for the first launch of its upcoming Neutron rocket. Rocket Lab, a spaceflight company based in California, has spent years building up a reputation as a reliable launch service provider for small satellites. Now, though, the venture has its sights set on bigger targets: Procuring some of those lucrative government and commercial contracts that have long been the domain of Elon Musk's Texas-based SpaceX. Maybe you've heard about Rocket Lab's diminutive Electron launch vehicle, which the company bills as the second-most active rocket in the U.S. Or maybe you've heard about its next-generation Neutron spacecraft, which could soon be making its inaugural flight from Virginia. Whichever may be the case, here's everything to know for those interested in Rocket Lab and its future plans for spaceflight. What is Rocket Lab? Rocket Lab is a launch service provider and spaceflight company founded in 2006 and based in Long Beach, California. The company operates out of three launch pads at two launch sites, including one in New Zealand and two in Virginia at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport within NASA's Wallops Flight Facility. Many space industry analysts have said that Neutron could emerge as a credible challenger to SpaceX's Falcon 9 in the medium-lift launch market. Rocket Lab is developing the Neutron rocket – which already has contracts with the Department of Defense – for commercial, civil and military space operations. That includes satellite constellation deployments, cargo resupply missions to the International Space Station and interplanetary missions. The arena is one that SpaceX, founded by billionaire Elon Musk in 2002, has dominated for years with its Falcon 9 rocket – one of the most active rockets in the world. The Falcon 9 is routinely the rocket of choice to launch NASA astronaut missions to the International Space Station and is the exclusive launch provider for Musk's Starlink satellite deliveries. At 141-feet-tall, Neutron is smaller in stature than SpaceX's two-stage, 230-foot Falcon 9. But like the Falcon 9, Neutron is designed to be reusable so that it can launch more frequently. Its design features an integrated system that brings Neutron's first stage and payload fairings back to Earth as a single stage. Capable of delivering about a 14-ton (more than 28,600 pounds) payload to low-Earth before landing, Neutron is powered by Rocket Lab's newly developed Archimedes engine. Rocket Lab's emergence also comes at a time of mounting public discord between Musk and President Donald Trump. What is Rocket Lab's Electron rocket? Rocket Lab has already spent years reliably launching its smaller Electron rocket to deliver small satellites and other payloads to orbit for civil and commercial contractors. At 59 feet tall, Electron is capable of carrying just 661 pounds of cargo to space, according to Rocket Lab. A version of the rocket is also tailored for Rocket Lab's hypersonic HASTE launches. One of the two launch complexes where Electron can launch is right next door to the Neutron's new launch complex. Since its first orbital launch in January 2018, the Electron has delivered more than 200 satellites to orbit and become one of the most frequently launched U.S. rockets, second only to the Falcon 9, according to Rocket Lab. In June alone, the Electron launched four times on both government and commercial missions, according to Rocket Lab. The most recent mission came June 28 when the Electron launched a single satellite to space for "a confidential commercial customer," Rocket Lab announced in a press release. The mission was the second of two launches from the same launch site in less than 48 hours, a new launch record for the company. Is Rocket Lab a good stock to buy? Whether to invest Unlike SpaceX, Rocket Lab is publicly traded. While Rocket Lab's stock is up 800% over the past year, according to Forbes, the company is not yet profitable. "A lot hinges on Rocket Lab's ability to evolve its revenue model and reach sustained profitability," Sasirekha Subramanian, an equity research content expert, wrote for Forbes.
