Pakistani animated film ‘The Glassworker' heads to US theaters with Watermelon Pictures

Arab News17-05-2025
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's first hand-drawn animated film 'The Glassworker' is set to screen in the United States (US) after Watermelon Pictures acquired its distribution rights, the US-based film production and distribution company said this week.
The Glassworker, released in Pakistan in July last year, was storyboarded by young Pakistani animator, Usman Riaz, who also directed the movie that comprised 1,477 cuts and 2,500 individual drawings, bringing to life the coming-of-age tale of two people from disparate backgrounds: young Vincent who is an apprentice at his father's glass workshop, and the talented violinist Alliz, the daughter of a military colonel.
Around them, a war threatens to upend their lives and the relationships between the children and parents are tested. A total of 250 people worked on the film including national and international cast and crew.
In a post on Instagram, Watermelon Pictures said they were proud to announce that their very first animated feature, The Glassworker, would soon be coming to US theaters.
'After being selected as Pakistan's submission to the 2025 Academy Awards, #TheGlassworker took the animation world by storm as Pakistan's first ever hand-drawn animated feature,' the distribution company said.
'An ode to Hayo Miyazaki's dedication to telling beautiful stories frame by frame, The Glassworker is truly a work of art.'
The deal was closed during Cannes and negotiated by Hamza Ali for Watermelon Pictures and Hélène Espeisse on behalf of Charades, which is representing the film at this year's Marché Du Film, US entertainment website DEADLINE reported.
'The Glassworker is a breathtaking, emotional story that will resonate deeply with audiences of all ages. We are honored to bring this cinematic gem to US theaters,' Watermelon Pictures co-founder Hamza Ali was quoted as saying.
Ali launched the film production and distribution company in April, 2024 along with his brother, Badie Ali, with Alana Hadid as creative director. The firm aims to amplify the voices of underrepresented filmmakers across the globe.
'We are thrilled that The Glassworker will be released theatrically in the United States by Watermelon Pictures. Their rapid growth and recent string of successful, meaningful films make them the perfect partner to bring our work to American audiences,' Khizer Riaz, the film's producer, was quoted as saying.
'We couldn't be more excited.'

Pakistani woman artists connect via WhatsApp after actor's death spotlights growing urban isolation

ISLAMABAD: Women in Pakistan's entertainment industry have come closer and created a WhatsApp group to check in on each other and ensure immediate help to anyone going through difficult times, following this month's shocking death of Humaira Asghar. The 42-year-old, originally from Lahore, was found dead at her rented flat in Karachi on July 18, at least nine months after her passing. Pakistani police have said medico-legal authorities found no traces of toxins in her body. The case stirred a debate in Pakistan about the silent toll of urban isolation, especially in large cities like Karachi, where rapid expansion, changing family structures and weakening community bonds are quietly reshaping how people live — and die. Hundreds of Pakistani women, including actors, directors, producers and makeup artists, have joined the WhatsApp group, 'Connectivity 101,' after the idea was proposed by Zhalay Sarhadi, Yashma Gill, Sonia Hussain, Mansha Pasha and others. 'The core purpose of Connectivity 101 is to create networking through a platform, connectivity through a platform, through which people can talk about their problems... people can inquire about well-being and keep a check on each other,' Gill said in an interview, adding it came into existence after the tragic passing of Asghar. Asghar's death came weeks after renowned actor Ayesha Khan was found dead in her apartment in Karachi's Gulshan-e-Iqbal area, according to police. Her neighbors had reported a foul smell emitting out of her apartment that led to the discovery of the 84-year-old's body. Gill, one of the Connectivity 101 admins, said the initiative was taken after it was realized that people working in the industry, especially women, are usually not able to stay in touch with their families, friends and even colleagues due to their busy schedules. 'This connection is very important not just to celebrate good times, but also to support each other in hard times,' she said. Nearly 44 percent of Pakistanis now live in urban areas, up from 35 percent in 2010, according to World Bank estimates. Mental health experts have warned that loneliness isn't just a social issue but a serious health risk. Prof. Dr. M. Iqbal Afridi, a Karachi-based psychiatrist, last week cited World Health Organization (WHO) findings that over 870,000 people died globally in 2024 due to conditions linked to extreme isolation. 'In fact, loneliness has been found to be more painful and damaging than conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure,' he said. 'It has also been observed that people who get disconnected from their friends, family and social circles often develop several diseases along with physical, psychological and social issues.' Gill shared that they have introduced a poll system in the group through which members can mark their presence or inform that they will not be available for a few days. She said only women from the industry are added to the group through trusted references, with a few protocols set for everyone. She said group members are even urged to exercise 'extreme caution' while communicating with each other so that everyone benefits and no negative situation arises. 'I am pro-friendships, people should become friends. But these are celebrities and girls that we are talking about, so things should be taken care of,' she added.

Spotify names Pakistani artist Afusic to Radar program

ISLAMABAD: Spotify has named rising Pakistani musician Afusic as its featured artist for the third quarter of 2025 under its global Radar program, spotlighting the viral star's rapid ascent in the country's evolving music scene. Afusic — the stage name of Affan Khan — gained widespread recognition this year after his single 'Pal Pal' went viral on the platform, amassing over 64 million streams. The song's success has placed him among a new wave of artists reshaping Pakistan's independent music landscape. As the Pakistani music industry undergoes a digital transformation, platforms like Spotify have played a key role in spotlighting emerging talent and connecting local voices with global audiences. 'Spotify's Radar Pakistan returns this quarter, spotlighting Afusic as its latest featured artist,' Pakistani agency Asiatic Public Relations said in a statement on Friday. 'This milestone marks a significant moment in his rapidly rising career with his viral track 'Pal Pal' being featured on the Radar Pakistan playlist.' According to Spotify data shared by the agency, Afusic's audience has surged by more than 1,200 percent since April 2025, with his music landing on nearly 270,000 playlists globally. Streams have spiked over 440,000 percent since the song debuted in the platform's Fresh Finds Pakistan playlist in February. 'In the past 28 days alone, the demographic breakdown of his global audience reveals a strong connection with younger listeners — 60 percent male and 40 percent female — led by the 18–24 age group, followed closely by 25–34-year-olds,' the statement said. Afusic called the Radar selection a 'huge moment.' 'Radar is an incredible platform that shines a light on independent artists and helps us reach new audiences, while also giving fans a chance to connect with who we are beyond the music,' he said. 'I'm truly grateful for the support Spotify has shown me — watching 'Pal Pal' grow from Fresh Finds to Hot Hits Pakistan shows just how powerful this journey can be.' Afusic joins past Radar Pakistan alumni including Hasan Raheem, Taha G, Shae Gill, and Rovalio, all of whom have gained both domestic and international acclaim in recent years.

May Calamawy promotes Palestinian film's North American run

DUBAI: Egyptian Palestinian actress May Calamawy took to social media on Saturday to promote Palestinian film 'To A Land Unknown.' For the latest updates, follow us on Instagram @ Distributed by Watermelon Pictures, the film is directed by Mahdi Fleifel and stars Angeliki Papoulia, Mahmoud Bakri, Manal Awad and Aram Sabbah. May Calamawy took to Instagram Stories to share news that 'To A Land Unknown' is on a 40-screen cinema run in North America this month, including showings in New York, Houston and Vancouver. 'Reda and Chatila are two Palestinian cousins hustling their way through the underbelly of Athens pursuing their dream of making it to Germany. But as their hardship grows, so too does their desperation. When Chatila hatches a reckless all-or-nothing plan, it strains their bond and pushes the limits of what they will do for freedom,' the film's logline reads. The film was awarded the Silver Yusr Award December's Red Sea Film Festival in Saudi Arabia. Watermelon Pictures was co-founded by Alana Hadid, the sister of supermodels Gigi and Bella Hadid. Hadid — along with brothers Badie Ali and Hamza Ali — co-founded Watermelon Pictures, a production company with a mission to create compelling, impactful stories that resonate with global audiences. 'I was honored to be asked to be the creative director of Watermelon Pictures. I think it's not only a passion project for Hamza and Badie, but it is an opportunity for Palestinians to have a place to go to tell their stories … I get emotional about it. I think it's just one of the most beautiful things that people have a place where they can put their stories. And we know that we have a safe place for that,' Hadid previously told Arab News. For her part, Calamawy is known for her roles in US Netflix series 'Ramy' and 'Moon Knight' (2022), where she plays dual characters Layla El-Faouly and the Scarlet Scarab. She made headlines in late 2024 when almost all her scenes were cut from Ridley Scott's 'Gladiator II,' with fans taking to social media to complain. Her casting in the film was first announced in May 2023. At the time, Deadline reported that Scott had cast Calamawy after a lengthy search, writing: 'While many of the leading roles were straight offers, Scott wanted to do a similar search he did for the (Paul) Mescal part for the role that Calamawy ultimately landed.' However, fans noticed that in the final cut, which hit cinemas in November, Calamawy is only seen in passing and she has no dialogue.
