have long battled to earn the title, or to at least receive recognition and acknowledgement in the so-called "men's world". Yes, they have grappled to earn a seat at the table- unshackling the biases, breaking stereotypes, and outperforming expectations. However, India's booming tech sector where merit is said to rule opportunity is the new currency. One thing remains stubbornly unaffected: The unequal paycheck.
Beneath the glossy exterior of the surface lies a persistent rot: Women, despite rising into boardrooms and leading projects, continue to be paid less for equal and often greater contributions.
A recent study by TeamLease Digital has unearthed the depth and severity of this inequity. Analysing 13,000 contractual tech professionals across GCCs between 2020 and 2024, the report reveals a stark and growing gender pay gap that punishes women more as they climb higher. The numbers are not just alarming, they are a sober indicator of ingrained structural discrimination cloaked in the language of meritocracy.

This trend indicates that women in tech GCCs are not just underpaid in the initial days of career- their worth is systematically sidelined from financial progression. The data, drawn from 13,000 contractual tech associates between 2020 and 2024, reveals a troubling structural bias. Women aren't just hitting glass ceilings—they're walking tightropes under them.
The inequalities are even more jarring when examined sector by sector. In the banking, financial services, and insurance (BFSI) domain, women earn 26.3% less than men—an appalling number that barely improves even at senior levels, where the gap is still 23.8%. The life sciences and healthcare sectors fare no better.
Here, the overall gender pay gap sits at a shocking 29.5%, with senior-level women earning 23.5% less on average. Tech GCCs, comparatively better, still reflect a 19% overall gap. Even the energy sector, touted for its progressive policies, displays a 15% disparity.
Diversity on paper, not in paychecks
The corporate walls are well-embellished on Women's Day, and documents are adorned with extensive policies for female employees. However, are they equally reflected in salaries? Unfortunately, an emphatic no echoes the walls of the tech world.
While the gender pay gap remains severe, GCCs appear to be making modest progress in representation. The proportion of women in mid-level roles has risen to 13.68% in 2024 from 12.12% in 2023 according to the report. Senior-level participation saw an even notable increase—from 8.14% to 13.6% in the same period. But these numbers still fall far short of parity.
A paradoxical situation is painting the walls of corporate: Women are being promoted, but not being paid equitably. GCCs may be diversifying their organisation charts, but compensation policies remain stuck in a regressive past.
Geographical divide adds to the strain
TeamLease's city-wise analysis highlights another fault line. Women in Tier 1 cities comprise nearly 40% of the GCC workforce, compared to just 23.36% in Tier 2 cities. The urban advantage, however, comes at a cost—higher pressure, slower career growth, and little pay equity.
The senior-level struggle
Perhaps the most startling is the overall average senior-level pay gap across sectors: 16.4%. It's a statistic that underscores the systemic rot. Even as women climb the corporate ladder, their earnings remain anchored below their male counterparts.
The GCC model has long been celebrated for bringing global tech excellence to India. But the numbers paint a more sobering picture—of entrenched gender bias and an industry that still treats equality as a footnote rather than a foundation.

Should India adjust its trade balance to partially mitigate US tariff risks?

The prospect of a uniform 10% base tariff regime by the United States, along with an additional tariff to be calculated on the basis of a formula based on a partner country's trade balance relative to its total exports to the U.S. marks a fundamental shift in global trade calculus. India was trying to cut a deal with the US which would have prevented these additional tariffs from kicking in from the 9th of July but that seems unlikely now. Piyush Goyal's terse comment, accompanied by a smiling photograph, that India does notnegotiate under threat of deadlines, says it all. Is there anything that India could do to minimize tariff damage from the US? One possible line of thought that could be explored is to proactively reduce its trade surplus with the US, even if that involves marginally increasing import costs. One way to reduce it would be to decrease the trade surplus by importing more from the US, even if the goods being imported are slightly more expensive than from those currently being imported. India's strategic advantage lies in being a net importing country globally—with a trade deficit of around $240 billion in FY 2023–24—giving it room to maneuver. According to the official reports, the merchandise trade between the two nations was an estimated $129.2 billion in 2024. Indian exports of goods summed up to $87.4 billion in 2024. This amount was an increase from previous year's exports by 4.5 percent. The goods imported from the US, totalled $41.8 billion in 2024. This implies that India witnessed a surplus of $45.7 billion in merchandise trade with the US. From the data, it can be observed that India had a trade surplus ratio of 0.5 (i.e. 50%) for 2024 which is a good sign for economic growth, job creation and the strength of the currency. Live Events So, what could India's strategy be? There are two possible strategies that could be considered. The first option to explore could be import diversification to the US. India could attempt to raise its imports from the US—particularly in sectors where it already has structural dependencies or scope for efficiency improvements. India's imports from the US in 2023, present appealing opportunities and scope for expansion across several sectors. For instance, imports of oil and gas, currently valued at $11.6 billion, could be increased in line with India's strategy of energy diversification. In the aviation sector, imports of aircraft and machinery, worth $5.2 billion are likely to grow further as the country's aviation industry continues to expand. Electronics and semiconductors records imports under $2 billion. This sector also offers scope for growth with the implementation of Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes focusing on boosting domestic electronics manufacturing. Similarly, medical equipment imports, currently at $1.3 billion, can be expanded to support the ongoing development of India's healthcare infrastructure. Given these trends, one viable strategy for India would be to diversify and increase its imports from the US, particularly in sectors where there are existing dependencies or clear opportunities for efficiency improvements. A targeted increase of $10–15 billion in imports from the U.S. in these areas would reduce India's trade surplus with the U.S. to ~$30 billion, bringing the trade surplus ratio down from 50% to ~33%, reducing effective additional tariff exposure to around 13.3%. A second strategic option for the Government would be trade diversification. India can see if it's possible to simultaneously diversify some of its exports from US to third countries (e.g., EU, ASEAN, Africa) and shift some import sourcing away from countries like China to the U.S. If India pursues trade diversification, it can strike a better balance in its overall trade. It can also address critical geopolitical dependencies in global trade. By spreading its exports across a wider range of markets—not just the US, lowers its risk of reliance on a single market. At the same time, shifting some import sourcing away from countries such as China to the US would provide domestic input suppliers a smoother path under US compliance regimes, making it easier to navigate regulatory requirements. Advantages of these strategies would be that by reducing the trade surplus we would be able to lowers the additional tariff exposure, thereby helping Indian exporters retain their competitiveness in the US market. Increased US imports can strengthen India's access to clean energy tech, critical semiconductors, and advanced machinery. And finally, such a proactive adjustment could be sold as India's attempt to reduce the trade balance, thereby deepening the Indo-US strategic partnership. Further, potentially creating room for bilateral carve-outs or exemptions. However, they would not come without certain disadvantages and consequent criticism. Shifting to US suppliers may raise costs—US goods are often priced higher than Asian alternatives. For instance, US LNG landed price is 15–25% higher than Qatari or Russian alternatives. Also, some US exports may not be easily substitutable for inputs sourced elsewhere due to compatibility or volume. There is also the danger of short-term deterioration of the overall trade deficit, since an increase in high-value imports from the US could exacerbate India's overall current account deficit, even if temporarily. And finally, if the US again makes changes to its tariff policy, India's restructuring may become redundant. Nonetheless, India's structural trade flexibility offers a strategic tool to minimize damage from an evolving US tariff regime. By adjusting its trade balance with the US—especially via higher-value, strategically aligned imports—India can moderate tariff exposure from an estimated 15% to 12–13%, generating long-term diplomatic and economic dividends. This is a calculated bet. While there are short-term costs, including possible higher import bills and shifting supply chains, the broader payoff—in reduced tariff penalties, deepened bilateral trust, and a more balanced trade portfolio—may well justify the strategy. India's policymakers must remain nimble, using data-driven calibration and sectoral targeting to make this trade-off work. The author is President, Chintan Research Foundation

Guwahati: The Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal said that Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project, a strategic initiative to enhance connectivity between India's Northeast and Myanmar is set to be fully operational by 2027. He announced multiple initiatives by the Government to boost the waterways and maritime sector in the Northeastern region with investment of Rs 5,000 crores. Around 50,000 youth from the Northeast will be trained for maritime jobs. Sonowal while talking to media persons in Guwahati on Monday said, 'Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project is the result of India Myanmar Friendship Treaty. This is a strategic initiative to enhance connectivity between India's Northeast and Myanmar — is set to be fully operational by 2027. Under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Northeast stands at the heart of Bharat's development agenda. Empowered by Modi ji's transformative 'Act East' policy, this once landlocked region is now poised for direct and shorter access to international sea routes. The swift execution of the Sittwe Port in Myanmar is a testament to this commitment. The Maritime Skill Development Centre (MSDC) in Guwahati as well as the upcoming Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Dibrugarh aims to power this transformation. The CoE will be developed with an investment of Rs 200 crores. Both the centres are likely to produce 500 jobs annually. The Ministry has undertaken projects worth Rs 1,000 crore in the Northeast's inland waterways sector over the past two years, with Rs 300 crore works completed and Rs 700 crore slated for completion by 2025. Major initiatives include permanent cargo terminals at Pandu, Jogighopa, Dhubri, Bogibeel, Karimganj and Badarpur; year-round fairway dredging; a new approach road to Pandu Port; heritage restoration in Dibrugarh; tourist jetties worth Rs 299 crore; skill development centres at Guwahati and Dibrugarh; and plans for lighthouses at Bogibeel, Biswanath Ghat, Silghat and Pandu. Feasibility studies have been completed and found feasible for operation in Guwahati, Tezpur and Dibrugarh, and cruise vessels are being procured under central schemes. For Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura, the efforts are on to expand IWT infrastructure and promote water-based tourism. The operationalization of Indo-Bangladesh Protocol Route (IBPR) offers new trade routes bypassing the Siliguri Corridor, strengthening regional connectivity and aligning with the broader vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat. Other key initiatives include the deployment of 100 barges operated by a global major on NW2 & 16 by 2025, intended to significantly enhance cargo movement across Assam and neighbouring states. To ensure round-the-year navigability, the ministry plans to deploy 10 amphibian and cutter suction dredgers, backed by an investment of Rs 610 crore. Sonowal also announced plans to develop 85 community jetties across the Northeast to improve local connectivity. Sonowal shared that Rs 300 crore will be invested to build new tourism and cargo jetties at Silghat, Neamati, Biswanath Ghat and Guijan. In a major move toward modern urban transport, Water Metro projects are planned in Guwahati, Tezpur & Dibrugarh, with feasibility studies already completed. The government will also set up lighthouses at Pandu, Tezpur, Biswanath & Bogibeel, each equipped with IMD centres, with support from the Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change to provide accurate local weather forecasts.
