Benefits cheat mum ordered to repay €26k after Facebook posts exposed her
The mother-of-three was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 2005. But in 2020, she overstated her symptoms and claimed Personal Independence Payment (PIP).
She insisted she couldn't stand at her cooker or get out of a bath without help. She also said that even a simple trip to the chemist for her meds left her in tears.
Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court heard she was raking in £2,292.63 in PIP each month, according to Stoke-on-Trent Live. However, she conveniently forgot to tell the Department for Works and Pensions (DWP) that she was actually a member of the Stone Master Marathoners and regularly ran 5km and 10km races.
Her own Facebook posts showing her running were her downfall, reports the Mirror.
Morris, from Walton Way, Stone, was overpaid by £20,528.83 between October 20, 2020 and April 25, 2023. She admitted to dishonestly making a false statement to obtain a benefit and was put behind bars for eight months last July.
She's now been back in court for a Proceeds of Crime hearing. Judge Graeme Smith heard that Morris had profited by £22,386.02 from her criminal actions.
He ordered Morris to repay £22,386.02 within 28 days or face nine months in prison.
The court was briefed on surveillance conducted on Morris from February 5 to February 20, 2023. Prosecutor Regan Walters noted: "On February 5 she took part in a five-mile race and was seen running without assistance and showed no signs of balance problems. On February 11 she was seen running with the Stone Master Marathoners and showed no signs of discomfort."
Investigators found that Morris had taken part in 73 races between May 2019 and December 2022. When interviewed on May 11, 2023, Morris claimed her MS symptoms, including fatigue, had worsened.
However, she confirmed that she had joined the Stone Master Marathoners running club before filing her claim. She also acknowledged that the PIP form she submitted reflected her condition on her worst day.
Defence lawyer Paul Cliff mentioned that Morris has had MS for 19 years and the severity varies over time. He stated: "But it is accepted by her that the application did not give the full picture. It crossed over into the realms of dishonesty."
Cliff revealed that Morris's marriage had deteriorated in early 2020 and dismissed the notion that she led an opulent life through her deceitful claim. "She lost her home because of financial problems and was struggling to keep her head above water financially," he added.
"The application did not give the full picture. She did say running was one of the ways she tried to manage her MS. She has found it difficult to come to terms with her dishonesty."
Morris is also required to pay a surcharge of £187.

‘Far cry from life he used to live' – Jail wing details as vile rape plot ex-garda caged with another disgraced ex-cop

Shane Flanagan, 39, of Co Clare, was jailed for seven years for pretending to be the woman on a fetish site and discussing graphic sexual violence, cannibalism and rape. Brute Moody is serving a three-and-half-year sentence for a campaign of coercive control against his ex-partner. Advertisement Flanagan was handed a seven-year term last Tuesday for encouraging men to go to his workmate's house and rape her and her daughters. He resigned from the force in March. A source said: 'Flanagan will settle in well to the Midlands Prison as he will be serving at least part of his sentence alongside Moody. 'They will be like two peas in a pod. Moody is due for release next year, so once he is released, Flanagan will be the only other former garda on the landing. 'Flanagan joins some of the country's most dangerous sex offenders in the jail. Advertisement 'It's a far cry from the life he used to live, that's for sure. He has gone from locking up criminals to becoming one. 'There are certain inmates that aren't liked in prison and former members of An Garda Siochana are one of them.' The court heard how Flanagan and his colleague were only friends, and never romantic or intimate, when he set up a profile on a Canadian website that allows users to interact with each other about their sexual fetishes. HORROR ACTIONS He then joined a subgroup on the website called 'CNC', — or consensual non-consent — where women give advance consent to men to come to their homes to rape them. Flanagan used real photos of his colleague to set up the profile as well as information relating to her. He also set up a fake Facebook account for the same evil purpose. Advertisement The disturbing communications were discovered in December 2020, when one of the men who had been discussing the logistics of going to the woman's house with the fake account, contacted her on her legitimate Facebook profile to make sure she was really consenting. The fake profile had also encouraged strangers to not just rape the woman but also her two teenage daughters. The woman then set up her own profile on the site to find out what extent the information about her was online. She told the court how shocked she was to discover her colleague and friend had set up the profile and how it was a 'calculated, predatory act of violence' that had left lifelong scars for her and her daughters. Flanagan maintained it was just harmless role play when he was caught after giving men the woman's eircode and address. Advertisement 'BREATHTAKING DISREGARD' Imposing sentence at the Central Criminal Court, Judge Eileen Creedon said Flanagan's offending showed a 'breathtaking disregard' for the safety of the injured parties and that he would have been 'more alive to these dangers' due to his background as a garda. A source said Flanagan could now get a job alongside Moody as a cleaner at the prison. The insider said: 'Moody currently works as a cleaner, which is a sought-after job. He cleans up while the others are out in the yard. As Flanagan is also a former guard, it might also suit him to try and get a cleaning job, as they tend to interact less with the general population.'

Tributes have been paid to a man who was found dead in his home in Co Tipperary. The body of Ian Walsh, 49, was discovered at his home on Creggs Road in Carrick-on-Suir, Co Tipperary at around 3.30am on Monday (August 4). Gardaí are treating his death as suspicious and believe he may have died a few days prior. While a post-mortem examination will determine the course of Gardaí's investigation into Mr Walsh's death, tributes have begun pouring in for him following his death, with him being remembered by his colleagues at Irish Rail and railway enthusiasts as someone who 'went far beyond the extra mile.' Tributes have been paid to Ian Walsh, who was found dead in his home in Co Tipperary. Pic: Facebook Táilte Tours, who knew Mr Walsh as a signaller at the Cork railway station who was a 'huge supporter' of their operation, said 'Ian ran five railtours of his own over the course of the mid to late 2000s, and was very much a pioneer in 'outside the box' tours in Ireland, starting them from locations such as Waterford and Limerick, in an era when tours were generally based in Dublin or Belfast. 'He was more than happy to pass his experience and expertise on when we started operations a few years ago; for those of you who enjoyed the 'surprise' rare track moves on our Cork-based railtours, you can thank Ian, who went far beyond the extra mile to ensure our operations went off without a hitch. 'He had a wonderful knowledge of the Iarnród Éireann system and its people, and had also developed a passion for Bus Éireann operations, diligently recording the last runs on several rural routes in the south east as they disappeared, quickly becoming a friend to bus drivers in the Cork and Waterford areas.' Mr Walsh was found dead at his home in Carrick on Suir on Monday morning, with Gardaí believing that he may have died over the Bank Holiday weekend. Pic: Facebook Following the passing of Mr Walsh, Iarnród Éireann also paid tribute to him, saying that they were shocked at the death of their 'well known and popular' colleague. Another person wrote; 'A good friend from day one, there will never be another railwayman like Ian. Rip Squinty [Mr Walsh's nickname].' 'I got to know Ian from taking photos an uploading to facebook Morden Bus Eireann page,' another wrote. 'He was a pure Gentleman. You'll be missed.' Gardaí have appealed for anyone who was in the area of Cregg Road, Carrick-on-Suir over the Bank Holiday weekend, from Friday (August 1) at 8pm and Bank Holiday Monday (August 4) at 3.30am to contact them. Gardaí in Tipperary are appealing for anyone with any information, and who may have been on the Cregg Road area between Friday at 8pm and Monday at 3.30am to contact them. Pic: ABD/Shutterstock Additionally, anyone who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and was traveling in the area at the time is asked to make it available to Gardaí. Showjumper and horse rider GUILTY of forcing underage girl into sex with them before hatching ‘pact of silence'
Twisted paedo called himself 'daddy' in vile messages to girl SICK CRIME Showjumper and horse rider GUILTY of forcing underage girl into sex with them before hatching 'pact of silence' A SHOWJUMPER and horse rider have been found guilty of forcing an underage girl into having sex with them. Guy Simmonds, 37, and Lauren Jarvis, 26, targeted the girl despite knowing she was under 16. Advertisement 3 Lauren Jarvis had a so-called threesome with a teenage girl Credit: WNS 3 She and Guy Simmonds knew how old the teen was but still targeted her Credit: WNS Equestrian boss Simmonds called himself "daddy" in messages to the youngster as he plotted the illicit encounter. He and Jarvis then hatched a "pact of silence" when they got wind that the girl was talking about it. The pair were today convicted of sexual activity with a child following a trial. Simmonds was found not guilty on five other charges of sexual activity with a child relating to the same victim. Advertisement Cardiff Crown Court heard Simmonds bragged he was a "top showjumper" after targeting the underage girl on Facebook. Prosecutor James Hartson said there was a "clear element of grooming behaviour" from Simmonds, who had "no doubt at all" about the girl's age. He added: "At all times he knew how old she was and so did Jarvis. The victim told him herself in one of the very first messages she sent him. "The defendants didn't care about her age when they were planning and engaging in a so-called threesome with the victim. Advertisement "They also knew what they did was wrong and they agreed a pact of silence when they got wind she had started to talk about it." In January 2024, he messaged fellow rider Jarvis to organise the encounter at her home - asking when he should "pop over". Simmonds then text the girl to inform her of the plan, telling her: "You will both do what daddy says." The girl told the court Simmonds got her and Jarvis to "do stuff" with each other before he had sex with both of them. Advertisement Simmonds then messaged Jarvis after the encounter to say: "You both loved that haha". Jarvis replied: "Yeah, you missed round two" with a wink emoji. The pair then cooked up their vow of silence in a twisted bid to cover their crime. Simmonds text Jarvis, saying: "Hey, I have a feeling that [name of alleged victim] has said about us. Advertisement "If anyone asks for sake of both of us nothing ever happened that night xx." Jarvis replied: "Hey, who's she told? Oh god has she really, what's she trying to do, make our lives hell? Of course I will xx." Simmonds ran a riding school that offered "showjumping horse production and sales, coaching and schooling" in the village of Undy in Wales. The alarm was raised when the girl told her dad what had happened and he alerted police. Advertisement But Simmonds told police he did not have any form of sexual contact with the victim. He also claimed any messages about the encounter with Jarvis were "banter and a wind up." Judge Lucy Crowther adjourned the case for sentencing on September 29. 3 Jarvis entered into a 'pact of silence' with Simmonds Credit: WNS
