Protesters demand debt cancellation, climate action ahead of UN summit, World News

AsiaOnea day ago

SEVILLE, Spain — Activists marched in blistering heat through southern Spain's Seville on Sunday (June 29), calling for debt cancellation, climate justice and taxing the super rich on the eve of a UN summit on financing development that critics say lacks ambition and scope.
The four-day meeting — held once every decade — promises to take on poverty, disease and climate change by mapping out the global framework for development. But the United States' decision to pull out and wealthy countries' shrinking appetite for foreign aid have dampened hopes that the summit will bring about significant change.
Greenpeace members carried a float depicting billionaire Elon Musk as a baby wielding a chainsaw, seated atop a terrestrial globe. Others held up banners reading "Make Human Rights Great Again", "Tax justice now" or "Make polluters pay".
Beauty Narteh of Ghana's Anti-Corruption Coalition said her group wanted a fairer tax system and "dignity, not handouts".
Sokhna Ndiaye, of the Africa Development Interchange Network, called on the public and private sectors to be "less selfish and show more solidarity" with developing countries.
Hours earlier, however, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said that "the very fact that this conference is happening while conflict is raging across the globe is a reason to be hopeful".
Speaking at an event by non-profit Global Citizen, Sanchez reiterated Madrid's commitment to reach 0.7 per cent of GDP in development aid and urged other countries to do the same.
Jason Braganza, executive director of pan-African advocacy group AFRODAD who took part in the year-long negotiation on the conference's final outcome document, said countries including the US, the European Union and Britain had obstructed efforts to organise a UN convention on sovereign debt.
"It's a shame these countries have opted to protect their own interests and those of creditors over lives that are being lost," he added.

G-7 urges talks to resume for deal on Iran nuclear program

An expanded meeting of the G-7 summit took place in Kananaskis, Canada, on June 17. PHOTO: EPA-EFE WASHINGTON/OTTAWA - Foreign ministers from the Group of Seven (G-7) nations said on June 30 they supported the ceasefire between Israel and Iran and urged for negotiations to resume for a deal to address Iran's nuclear program, according to a joint statement. Since April, Iran and the US have held talks aimed at finding a new diplomatic solution regarding Iran's nuclear program. Tehran says its program is peaceful and Israel and its allies say they want to ensure Iran cannot build a nuclear weapon. 'We call for the resumption of negotiations, resulting in a comprehensive, verifiable and durable agreement that addresses Iran's nuclear program,' the G-7 foreign ministers said. Last week, Mr Trump announced a ceasefire between US ally Israel and its regional rival Iran to halt a war that began on June 13 when Israel attacked Iran. The Israel-Iran conflict had raised alarms in a region already on edge since the start of Israel's war in Gaza in October 2023. Before the ceasefire was announced, Washington struck Iran's nuclear sites and Iran targeted a US base in Qatar in retaliation. The G-7 foreign ministers said they urged 'all parties to avoid actions that could further destabilise the region'. US Middle East Envoy Steve Witkoff has said talks between Washington and Tehran were 'promising' and that Washington was hopeful for a long-term peace deal. The G-7 top diplomats denounced threats against the head of the UN nuclear watchdog on June 30, after a hardline Iranian newspaper said IAEA boss Rafael Grossi should be tried and executed as an Israeli agent. On June 12, the UN nuclear watchdog's 35-nation Board of Governors declared Iran in breach of its non-proliferation obligations for the first time in almost 20 years. Israel is the only Middle Eastern country believed to have nuclear weapons and said its war against Iran aimed to prevent Tehran from developing its own nuclear weapons. Iran is a party to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, while Israel is not. The UN nuclear watchdog, which carries out inspections in Iran, says it has 'no credible indication' of an active, coordinated weapons program in Iran. Eight-country coalition aims to tax luxury air travel

[SEVILLE, Spain] Countries including France, Kenya, Barbados and Spain on Monday launched a coalition to push for taxes on wealthy air passengers to help poorer nations respond to climate change, the French presidency said. The coalition, which also brings together Somalia, Benin, Sierra Leone and Antigua and Barbuda, said it would work to increase the number of countries taxing plane tickets, including business-class travel, and private jets. The air industry is a major source of the polluting emissions that contribute to global warming, which inflicts its worst impacts on vulnerable developing countries that are least responsible. Ahead of November's UN climate summit in Brazil, the French presidency said in a statement the group would work on making the aviation sector contribute more to funding climate adaptation. The aim would be to plough at least some of the tax proceeds into 'resilient investments and fair transitions' and help poorer countries raise more domestic revenue, a key factor for development, the statement added. France, Kenya and Barbados have previously lobbied for such 'solidarity levies' to raise money for climate action, suggesting taxes on shipping, fossil fuels, plastic and cryptocurrency. Greenpeace welcomed an 'important step' to raise more money from 'the most elite and polluting form of travel', which has remained 'undertaxed'. 'Bold, cooperative action that makes polluters pay is not just fair - it's essential,' Greenpeace's global political lead Rebecca Newsom said in a statement. The announcement came during a UN development conference in Spain that aims to deliver fresh impetus for a sector reeling from severe cuts to foreign aid, which have repercussions for poor countries' battle against climate change. Wealthy nations that have historically done the most to drive climate change are obliged to provide finance to help poorer countries adapt to its consequences under the 2015 Paris Agreement. REUTERS

Robinhood launches tokens allowing EU users to trade in US stocks

[BENGALURU] Robinhood said on Monday (Jun 30) it has launched tokens that will allow its customers in the European Union to trade more than 200 US stocks and exchange-traded funds, including Nvidia, Apple and Microsoft. The commission-free tokens can be traded around the clock, five days a week. Robinhood also plans to offer tokens linked to stocks of privately held companies, starting with Sam Altman's OpenAI and Elon Musk's SpaceX, the trading platform's top executives said at its keynote event in France. Robinhood's shares hit a record high and were last up nearly 10 per cent. The tokens will be issued through a partnership with blockchain firm Arbitrum. With the move, the company stands to benefit from rising global interest in the US stock market, home to some of the world's most influential tech giants and leading beneficiaries of the artificial intelligence boom. Tokenised equities mix traditional finance with crypto-like trading, and have been gaining traction among international investors due to better access, flexible trading hours and lower costs. Experts believe such tokens could dramatically alter the securities investing landscape, though they currently lack regulatory clarity in the United States. Sign Up Sign Up Menlo Park, California-based Robinhood plans to eventually develop its own blockchain that will expand trading hours for tokens to 24/7 from 24/5 currently. The company will also expand the number of available stock tokens to 'thousands' by the end of the year, Tenev said at the event. 'Tokenisation is going to open the door to a massive trading revolution,' he said. Last month, crypto exchange Kraken also launched equities-linked tokens for non-US investors. Expanding crypto tools Robinhood also announced several new product offerings, including crypto perpetual futures for its EU customers and staking for US users. The perpetual futures will allow users to make leveraged bets on the prices of cryptocurrencies. Unlike traditional futures, they have no expiry date. Rival Coinbase will also begin offering similar tools to US customers from next month. Meanwhile, staking lets customers lock up their cryptocurrency to help validate transactions on the blockchain, earning rewards in return. The practice had been controversial in recent years, until the Securities and Exchange Commission's staff last month said some forms of staking are not securities offerings. REUTERS
