Cricket-Struggling Mitchell retired out as Texas win rain-hit MLC contest
After rain had reduced the match at Lauderhill to a five-overs-a-side contest, Texas lost skipper Marcus Stoinis in the first over while Mitchell, the other opener, struggled to get going.
The New Zealander, who has a 138-plus strike rate in Twenty20 Internationals, made six runs off five balls before being retired out.
New man in Donovan Ferreira then blasted five sixes in his blistering 37 not out off nine balls to deflate Washington.
Ferreira and Shubham Ranjane, who top-scored with an unbeaten 39, plundered 53 runs in two overs to power the Super Kings to a commanding 87-2.
Defending champions Washington managed 44-4 in reply with skipper Glenn Maxwell falling for a first-ball duck.
Texas captain Stoinis said the tournament could see more and more cases of teams retiring out struggling batters, while player of the match Ferreira said coach Stephen Fleming prepared him for the situation.
"Flem obviously said, 'Be ready, we're going to take Mitch out'," said the South African.
"Obviously it's never nice taking a player out but hopefully he understands it's for the better of the team and luckily for us, tonight, it paid off."
Texas rose to second place, behind San Francisco Unicorns, following their sixth win in eight matches.

A wake is expected to take place at a chapel in Gondomar from 4:00 p.m. (1500 GMT) and a funeral on Saturday at a church nearby at 10:00 a.m. local time, Gondomar's mayor's office said. The death of Jota at the age of 28 has jolted the world of football, with messages of homage pouring in from former teammates, clubs, national leaders and fans. The Enstone-based team, effectively run by executive adviser and former principal Flavio Briatore who will continue to have overall charge, said Nielsen would start work as managing director on September 1. Nielsen has most recently been working for Liberty Media-owned Formula One, after a brief period as sporting director at the governing FIA. He was also sporting director when Renault won championships in 2005 and 2006 under Briatore. Alpine, last in the constructors' championship but switching to Mercedes engines next year, also appointed Kris Midgley as head of aerodynamic development. Midgley previously worked at Ferrari as principal aerodynamicist and is also returning to the Enstone factory after a stint from 2007-13. The two-time Tour champion, who claimed victory in 2022 and 2023, is aiming to reclaim the crown from Slovenia's Pogacar. "I think for sure I can say that I'm stronger than ever," Vingegaard told a press conference on Friday. "Last year, I was also on a very high level in the Tour de France, but it was in a different way. "I'm heavier now than I was last year, but it's muscle and we know that it gives a lot more power as well. So, I can say that I'm on the highest level that I've ever been." The 28-year-old rider finished second in last year's edition, with more than six minutes behind Pogacar, but his preparation for this edition was hampered by serious injuries a few months ago. "There's a really big difference compared to last year. Last year I came back from the terrible crash, and to be honest, it took me way longer than I actually thought to really come back", Vingegaard said. "It has taken me almost a year actually to get back to the same as it was prior to my crash." The rivalry between Vingegaard and Pogacar, who both claimed the last five editions of the Tour, is set to resume after the Slovenian secured victory over the Dane at last month's Criterium du Dauphine, finishing 59 seconds ahead. "Having a rival that's so good as Tadej brings out the best in yourself. And you know you have to train hard every day to try to compete with him", Vingegaard said. "It makes me even better. I have a lot of admiration for Tadej. He's a very nice guy and a very good bike rider. I really only have good words about him." Vingegaard will be backed by a strong Visma-Lease a Bike team featuring Giro d'Italia winner Simon Yates, 2023 Vuelta a Espana champion Sepp Kuss, two-time Paris-Nice winner Matteo Jorgenson and the versatile Wout van Aert.
