In broad daylight, the Colts return to Owings Mills for a joint practice with the Ravens
OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) — Forty-one years, four months and a week later, the Colts were back in Owings Mills. Indianapolis held a joint practice Tuesday with the Baltimore Ravens, two days before the teams' preseason matchup. The Colts have played several games in Baltimore since moving from Charm City to Indianapolis in 1984, but this practice brought them even closer to the defining scene of that relocation — moving vans essentially sneaking the team out of its facility in Owings Mills in the middle of the night in late March of that year. There's now a university campus where the Colts' facility used to be, about a 15-minute drive from where the Ravens practice. The rivalry between Baltimore and Indianapolis isn't particularly heated anymore, with the Ravens more worried about teams such as Pittsburgh in their own division. Still, Tuesday's practice included the type of skirmish that is fairly common in joint sessions like this. 'You can't get out of a joint practice without a fight,' Colts safety Camryn Bynum said. 'Obviously, it's going to get chippy, especially during the special teams phase. That's a staple in joint practices.' Indianapolis coach Shane Steichen announced that Anthony Richardson would start at quarterback against the Ravens and play about 1 1/2 quarters, with Daniel Jones playing half a quarter. Then the plan is to start Jones in the following game against Green Bay, with the playing time split reversed. While those two compete for the starting job with the Colts, Baltimore will keep two-time MVP Lamar Jackson off the field. Coach John Harbaugh confirmed that neither Jackson nor star running back Derrick Henry will play Thursday — and safety Kyle Hamilton wasn't suited up Tuesday. This may be as close as Jackson gets to live action against an opponent before the regular season starts — although he said he was careful not to get too involved in the fight. 'I'm chilling. I know the cameras (are) on all of us, so I can't really do too much," Jackson said. "But I feel like our guys handled their own.' Ravens defensive tackle Nnamdi Madubuike took the scrap in stride. 'I was far away. I didn't see exactly what happened,' he said. "I heard (Ravens cornerback) Nate (Wiggins) was slugging somebody or something. I don't know, but it was crazy.' Veteran defensive lineman Brent Urban was back with the Ravens after signing over the weekend. One of the highlights for the Colts was an interception by rookie safety Hunter Wohler on a pass by Jackson. 'The D-Line made a play and got him flushed, and knowing that it's a towards-the-end-of-the-game situation, you've got to keep your depth and not bite down low,' Wohler said. 'And just try to follow the quarterback and hope the ball finds you, and that time it did.' Wohler said linebacker Segun Olubi told him he'd have a chance to intercept Jackson. 'I was like, 'Bro, that's not going to happen. ... He's not going to be in when I'm in there,'" Wohler said. 'I'm with the twos. And then yeah, it ended up happening. So that was just kind of a funny little moment that we got to enjoy.' Steichen said Wohler might be keeping the ball. 'Even though it was practice,' Steichen said. 'I said, 'You keeping the ball?' He's like, 'Yeah, it was Lamar.'' ___ AP NFL:

Will age finally catch with Derrick Henry this season?
Yahoo Fantasy analysts Matt Harmon and Scott Pianowski weigh the Ravens RB as a first-round pick in drafts as he enters his 10th NFL season. Hear the full conversation on the 'Yahoo Fantasy Forecast' podcast - and subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you listen. View more Video Transcript Pick number 7, Derrick Henry, Ravens running back Scott Pinowski. Um, look, the big dog continues to defy age. We all actually have him ranked a little bit lower than this from the overall ranks perspective. You've got him not too far behind number 9. I've got him 10. Boone actually has him ranked himself. Uh, he's got him at 15. So maybe Boone's got the most concern. About Derrick Henry, I actually think the the negative case for Derrick Henry is easy to make, Scott. It's that Father Time is undefeated, but any other reason to be concerned about Derrick Henry? Yeah, Henry, what is it? 11th. This is a guy who worked like crazy in high school, but people weren't tackling him that much. He was giving up more punishment than he probably absorbed than he plays in college, at least when he first went. To Tennessee, they kind of soft pedaled him early in the career, you know, had other guys they wanted to use, it seemed to make sense, but he's led the league in carries in 4 of the last 6 seasons. Not going to catch a lot of passes. He's, I, I think he actually could. Teams just gave up on that a long time ago. I don't know why Henry in space would be such a bad idea. You don't need him to run intricate routes. Just another look, get him tackled by the lesser people, the lighter people on the defense, but uh, you know, Lamar Jackson, for all of his rushing chops, he is not a touchdown guy. So nobody's surprised Henry scored 16 touchdowns last year. He's basically got a floor of what, 11 or 12 in a healthy season and he could easily get back up to that 16 level again. It's just a matter of the mileage. At some point, every player is gonna feel it, the efficiency is gonna go down. It didn't go down last year, 5.9 yards per carry. That's what a mobile quarterback does for you. And you know, the Todd Monken offense, this Baltimore offense that we love, it hasn't always translated in the playoffs, but man, are the Ravens an absolute blast to watch offensively. It's just how do you feel about this is a guy. He is age 28, age 29, is age 30 the year to get worried about. He's in his age 31 season and he's been working really hard the last handful of seasons. So at some point, you might get nervous about that. But I feel like he's already scored, you know, 10 or 12 touchdowns to start the season. You know, Derrick Henry is such a consistent scorer. He's gonna be, if you're like me and want somebody to do something every week, Derrick Henry's gonna be one of those guys. I'm actually pretty confident about drafting him, and he's that archetype of a player I generally wouldn't draft because I'd just be, I'd rather be a year earlier than a year late on guys. I just feel like I'm always breaking the rules for Derrick Henry. Close
