Norway newlywed Bizet loving Swiss Euro 'honeymoon'

CNA2 days ago
Very few blushing brides choose to spend their honeymoon time almost lobbing the keeper for a goal at a major tournament but that was the case for Norway's Celin Bizet Donnum, who recently married fellow player Aron before flying to the Women's Euros.
Following a fairytale wedding on the shores of Italy's Lake Como, the bubbly 23-year-old came on in her country's 2-1 opening win over hosts Switzerland on Wednesday and almost got the perfect wedding present but her effort flew just wide.
"It's hard to sometimes organise when to have stuff like weddings but we thought in the next five years everything can happen and obviously he's on the national team too and if they go to a tournament, it's going to be for how long?" Bizet told Reuters of the decision to get married so close to the Euros.
"But it was no stress, to be fair, it was all chilled and nice and a lovely place in Italy, and I had the best days of my life."
With husband Aron playing for Toulouse in France and Celine having completed a busy season in the Women's Super League with Manchester United, the crammed football calendar leaves little time for long-distance relationships, let alone weddings.
"I think I'm kind of used to it. It's my life, it's my husband's life. He's two days off and then training again, or two weeks off on holiday and then straight to training," she said.
"So I think we're very used to it, and it's not like we're not going to have our honeymoon (very soon), it's going to be in the future, so I'm looking forward to that."
To ensure they could remain focused on their football, the couple enlisted the services of a wedding planner to sort out the logistics of hosting around 80 guests who were present when they tied the knot, and Bizet laughed off the suggestion that she might have wanted to control everything in great detail.
"We had the wedding planner so we didn't do much to be fair, we just sat down and were just saying yes or no to flowers or bouquets or a boat or this and that. So no, not a control freak and was just chilled, just saying yes or no to messages, so it was nice," she said.
For now, husband Aron is staying close to Norway's base in Neuchatel but the winger will soon be heading back to France for pre-season training, while his new wife keeps her sights firmly set on Norway's Euro campaign.
"It's like a normal thing in football, I think, it's life - someday we'll finish with football and we can be together every day, so I'm not taking it hard, it's life. Everyone does it," she said.
Bizet suggested that, when the time comes, the pair might go on a safari for their honeymoon, but Norway are looking to qualify for next year's men's World Cup in the United States, with Aron likely to be part of the squad if they make it.
Bizet is looking no further than Norway's next game at the Euros, but she allowed herself to look at photos and Instagram posts from their special day before the tournament got under way.
"It was more (than I dreamed it could be). Nothing went wrong. Everyone had the best time, the vibes, the music, my husband. Everything was just perfect," Bizet recalled.

Rashford, Garnacho among five players seeking Manchester United exit

[BENGALURU] Five players including England forward Marcus Rashford and Argentina winger Alejandro Garnacho have informed Manchester United that they wish to explore a future away from the Premier League side, a club source said on Friday (Jul 4). Brazilian midfielder Antony, Dutch defender Tyrell Malacia and England international Jadon Sancho are also looking to leave the club, the source added. Rashford, who has made more than 400 senior appearances for United, has fallen out of favour with manager Ruben Amorim, played for Aston Villa on loan while United had their worst-ever Premier League campaign, finishing 15th in the standings. Amorim had called Rashford's work rate into question, saying he would rather put a goalkeeper coach on the bench than a player not giving their all. Rashford said he was feeling fitter and better since joining Villa, where he scored two goals in 10 league appearances. United also failed to qualify for the Champions League as they lost the Europa League final 1-0 to Tottenham Hotspur. Garnacho, who was a late substitute in the final, voiced his displeasure on social media after the loss. 'Up until the final, I played every round helping the team, and today I play 20 minutes, I don't know,' he wrote in a post. 'The final will influence (my decision), but the whole season, the situation of the club.' Sancho was on loan at Chelsea, where he made 31 league appearances last season. Antony, who joined United from Ajax Amsterdam in 2022 for a reported initial transfer fee of more than US$100 million, scored five goals in 17 LaLiga appearances on loan at Real Betis. REUTERS

Sloppy Springboks beat brave Italy 42-24 in Pretoria

PRETORIA :South Africa laboured but still ran in six tries to secure a 42-24 victory over an inexperienced Italy side at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday, as scrumhalf Morne van den Berg crossed the line twice in a stand-out performance. The world champions were sloppy and often beaten at the breakdown and line-out as Italy put up a brave fight and heading into the final 10 minutes were still in the match against their vastly more experienced hosts. Centre Jesse Kriel, winger Kurt-Lee Arendse, prop Vincent Koch and flanker Marco van Staden also scored tries for the Springboks, who will seek an improved performance in next week's second test in Gqeberha. Italy looked shellshocked as they trailed 28-3 at halftime, but they were much improved in the second period as flanker Manuel Zuliani, debutant replacement hooker Pablo Dimcheff and captain Niccolo Cannone all scored tries. "There will be disappointment in tonight's performance," Springboks scrumhalf Faf de Klerk said. "Italy really made it hard for us at the breakdown, their forwards were phenomenal. We must look at it in the week and fix it for the next game." South Africa were dominant in the first half, pushing Italy off the ball in the scrum and scoring four tries. Kriel raced onto a grubber kick from midfield partner Damian de Allende to dot down and after Italy number eight Lorenzo Cannone received a yellow card for hands in the ruck, Van den Berg dived over from a powerful Springbok scrum. Arendse burst through a gap in the visitors' defence to score his side's third try, and Van den Berg added another as the Springboks cut holes in their opponents' defence. Italy scored the first points of the second half when Zuliani stretched to score a try, but replacement prop Koch barged his way over for the hosts. Argentine-born Dimcheff finished off an excellent driving maul for Italy's second try, and when captain Niccolo Cannone added as third for the visitors, it was game on. Van Staden's score ended Italian hopes, but there were many positives for touring side. "I am very happy with the performance," Niccolo Cannone said. "We have to improve some details for next week, but we are very proud. We are a strong group, even with some injuries, and we showed that."

Sinner demolishes Martinez to reach Wimbledon last 16

LONDON :It took only seven points before the first forlorn shout of "C'mon Pedro" was warmly applauded by a Centre Court crowd who had already seen enough to know that Jannik Sinner was in for an easy Saturday afternoon at Wimbledon. A disgruntled murmur echoed around the arena when the world number one moved to the verge of a second break with only 14 minutes of the match having passed before frustration gave way to sympathy for Sinner's ailing opponent Pedro Martinez. When it became apparent that the Spaniard was struggling with a shoulder injury, his every point, near miss, brave scramble for the ball was cheered, but there was to be no mercy from Sinner. The top seed bulldozed into the last 16 with a crushing 6-1 6-3 6-1 win that will have served as an ominous warning to his title rivals. The trainer was called on court twice to work on Martinez's injury but Sinner was ruthless, as he set about completing his third consecutive straight-sets victory at the All England Club. The 23-year-old has dropped 17 games in his first three matches, to equal a professional era record at Wimbledon, at an average of less than two per set and has yet to lose his serve. Bidding to become Italy's first Wimbledon champion, he will next face Bulgaria's Grigor Dimitrov. "Very happy with the win but we all saw that he was struggling with his shoulder. When you don't serve well on this surface it is hard," Sinner said. "Huge respect to him to come out here and compete." STERNER TESTS If Sinner, who swatted aside compatriot Luca Nardi and Australia's Aleksandar Vukic in the previous rounds, is to add another Grand Slam title to the two he has won in Melbourne and one in New York, he will face sterner tests than Martinez. The world number 52, who had matched his best Grand Slam performance by reaching the third round, was two breaks and 5-0 down when the trainer was first called onto court. He then immediately held to love as the crowd roared and Martinez gave a wry smile. This was not the beginning of a great comeback, however, as Sinner took the set and broke for a 3-2 lead in the next. Martinez created four break points in the eighth game, but spurned them all and Sinner broke again to clinch the set. The trainer's second appearance was far less miraculous for Martinez as Sinner raced into a 5-0 lead in the third set and created two match points for the dreaded bagel. Martinez roused himself to hold but the reprieve lasted one game as Sinner's 11th ace brought up three more match points and the Italian wrapped up victory when the Spaniard sent another return off target. The opening week could not have gone much better for Sinner, who by conceding only 17 games in three matches equalled the mark of Jan Kodes in 1972 for the fewest in the professional era at Wimbledon.
