One such special event recently caught the attention of astronomers, telling how galaxies influence each other during their lifetimes. Through the lens of the world's most powerful telescopes, researchers have witnessed a cosmic duel.

Astronomers have observed a powerful interaction between two galaxies, moving toward each other at an astonishing speed of over 1.8 million kilometers per hour.
This event happened over nearly four years of observation, and it shows one galaxy emitting intense radiation that damages its partner, and hinders its ability to form new stars.

Scientists describe this extraordinary encounter as a 'cosmic joust,' where the two galaxies that are located about 11 billion light-years from Earth are gradually merging into a single, larger galaxy. The radiation emitted from a bright core called a quasar, powered by a supermassive black hole, pushes away gas clouds in the neighboring galaxy.

These gas clouds are essential for star formation, and their dispersal effectively stops the birth of new stars in that galaxy.
'It's an exciting field to study. Research like this can teach us more about the birth of new galaxies and observe how they evolve over time,' said astrophysicist Dong-Woo Kim in an interview with CNN.
Using Very Large Telescopes, the researchers discovered that the quasar's radiation is about a thousand times stronger than what is found in our own Milky Way.
This powerful energy breaks apart hydrogen gas clouds in the companion galaxy, making them too small and diffuse to create stars. Meanwhile, some of the material from the affected galaxy feeds the quasar, giving it even more energy to unleash.
'At first, we just knew there was some molecular gas between the (attacking galaxy's) quasar and us. It's only after we started to look with bigger telescopes that we detected there were actually two galaxies,' explained researcher Pasquier Noterdaeme.
This observation marks the first time scientists have directly seen how a quasar's radiation influences the star-forming gas in a nearby galaxy a phenomenon previously only theorized.
Detecting this rare event was no small feat. Quasar light is so intense it usually outshines and hides nearby galaxies, making such discoveries as difficult as 'finding a needle in a haystack,' according to study coauthor Sergei Balashev.

A recent Lancet report showed India has one of the world's highest blood shortages, with lack of awareness, sub-par infrastructure and a chronic shortage of donors worsening the crisis. So, the idea of a blood substitute could be life changing in such a scenario. What is artificial blood? It isn't a full replica of human blood as it doesn't have white blood cells or platelets. But it does what's most vital in an emergency — carry oxygen. These lab-made blood cells mimic real ones, stay stable at room temperature, and are made using expired donated blood that would otherwise be discarded. These vesicles are just 250 nanometres wide — small enough to flow through capillaries, just like natural red blood cells do. Unlike the red colour of blood, these artificial cells have a purplish hue as they do not oxidise until used. HbVs don't have blood type and don't carry infection risks. They are made from expired red blood cells, or even from animal or lab-sourced haemoglobin. In essence, it's a purified, shelf-stable oxygen delivery system — without complications of blood transfusions. These lab-made cells are not a full replica of human blood as these don't have white blood cells or platelets. But they do what's most vital in an emergency — carry oxygen Agencies Is it better than the real thing? Artificial blood (called NMU-HbV) offers several benefits over traditional blood donations. For starters, it rules out the need for compatibility testing, making it ideal for emergency situations. 'When a blood transfusion is urgently needed, some time is lost trying to determine the patient's blood type. With the artificial red blood cells, there's no need to worry about blood types,' Sakai told Japan Times. Also, the blood can be stored at room temperature for up to two years, far exceeding the short shelf life (around 42 days) of donated blood. After completing successful safety tests in animals in early 2019, researchers began the first human trial in Oct 2020 at Hokkaido University. Healthy adult men were given 10ml, 50ml and 100 ml doses in three separate groups. Some participants had mild fever or discomfort from the injection, but those were short-lived. Blood tests, heart checks, and other health indicators were normal. The trial was approved by Japan's drug authority and the university's ethics committee.

1 2 3 4 Kolkata: The return of the Crew Dragon Grace Spacecraft capsule, which made a splashdown in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of San Diego, California, around 3.01 pm (IST) on Tuesday, brought excitement to the faces of students across the city. Around 200 school students turned up at the Birla Industrial and Technological Museum (BITM) to witness the historic moment virtually as the return of the Axiom Mission 4 was live-streamed there. As the clock ticked closer to the landing, the excitement was at its peak among the youngsters accompanied by their teachers. Raj Routh, a Class VI student of Mitra Institution (Main), said, "It is a happy moment for all Indians as Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla and the crew touched down on the planet." After 20 days since the launch on June 25 from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida and docking to the International Space Station (ISS) the next day, Shukla and the three crew members successfully completed the Axiom Mission 4. Teachers were equally thrilled to be there. Mitali Chakraborty Saha, a teacher, said, "The students are very happy to be here, to witness something like this together. It would be impossible to experience this at home as they would not be together." However, when my NEET results did not fetch a govt seat, I secured a govt seat in the 2022 CET counselling and enrolled at Sahyadri College. Though disheartened initially, from day one of college, I began exploring and ideating,' she told TNN. Her father suggested engineering. She picked Robotics and Automation at Sahyadri College of Engineering and Management in Mangaluru. The plan was simple: make the most of it. From college projects to international medals She didn't sit still. Senior students' projects grabbed her attention. She wanted in. For eight months she juggled tough assignments, back-to-back interviews and late-night research, all while staying on top of her sixth-semester coursework. The offer that broke the ceiling In December 2024, the call came. Rolls-Royce offered her a pre-placement opportunity in its Jet Engine Manufacturing Division. From January 2, she worked remotely every night from midnight to 6 AM, squeezing in classes by day. By April 2025, the company doubled down. Her initial ₹39.6 lakh package was bumped up to ₹72.3 lakh per year, recognising her grit and results. She'll soon finish her seventh semester and fly to Texas to join the global team. Family and college pride Rithuparna, daughter of Saresh KN and Geetha Saresh, grew up in Koduru in Thirthahalli taluk. She did her schooling at St Agnes before Sahyadri. Her younger sister, Rithvika KS, now has one more reason to look up to her. Her college is beaming too. 'The college is proud of her achievement,' said Lawrence Joseph Fernandes, Head of Mechanical Engineering and Robotics and Automation at Sahyadri, to TNN. What does she say to students dreaming of big jobs? No sugar-coating. 'Youth today have big dreams, yet they only give their 50 per cent instead of 200 per cent to achieve what it takes to be successful,' she told Deccan Herald. From a girl who once thought her dream had ended outside an exam hall, it's advice worth listening to.
