Jalen Williams responds back to social media haters who call him 'corny'

Growing up a Kobe Bryant fan, Jalen Williams recently paid homage to his basketball hero. Playing an entire playoff run with an injured wrist, the 24-year-old helped lead the Oklahoma City Thunder to their first NBA championship. When you win the Larry O'Brien trophy, you've earned all the bragging rights. Williams has taken advantage of that benefit. He's flexed the championship after being widely questioned on whether he was a good enough second-best player on a title contender. Williams took to social media to share a side-by-side photo of himself and Bryant. Both wore pajamas at the free-throw line to attempt a one-handed shot. The other hand was wrapped in a cast after surgery. As is the case for most social media posts with a social-media-savvy NBA star, there were some criticisms from fan accounts. The buzzword used in Williams' reply was "corny" as he compared himself to Bryant. The Los Angeles Lakers legend has quite a vocal fanbase. That's what happens when you win five rings on the NBA's marquee franchise. The 23-year-old received criticism for being a copycat. Of course, none of it matters in real life. What these anonymous accounts say online rarely reflects Williams' reality. He replied to an Instagram comment to show that. An account said they felt bad that the 24-year-old was flamed on social media for showing love to his favorite player of all time. He's never been shy about his fandom of Bryant since he arrived in the NBA. "tbh the same people calling me corny couldn't hold my water in real life, prolly would ask for a selfie if we was face to face," Williams wrote. That's probably a good way to view it if you're Williams. It comes with the territory of being one of the NBA's best players and recently winning an NBA championship. There will always be a section of fans who villainize him, even if they need to resort to off-court qualities like his personality or how he carries himself online. All you can do is shrug your shoulders and move on. The Thunder have dealt with what every NBA superteam has dealt with since the league was created. The only difference between now and the beginning is that social media platforms allow critics' voices to be louder.

Venus Williams wins doubles match at DC Open in return to tournament play

The post Venus Williams wins doubles match at DC Open in return to tournament play appeared first on ClutchPoints. Venus Williams had a dominant return to the court in doubles at the DC Open. The 45-year-old tennis icon had last played at the 2024 Miami Open and appeared to be retired after a decorated career. In singles, Williams' accolades include winning seven major titles, including five at Wimbledon and two at the US Open, winning the individual gold medal at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, and achieving the world No. 1 ranking on numerous occasions. While that is an all-time great resume, Venus might be an even better player in doubles. Alongside her sister Serena, Venus has won 14 doubles majors, including each slam at least twice, and three Olympic gold medals. To add on, Williams also has two grand slams in mixed doubles. Serena, who is by most accounts the greatest women's singles player of all time, has admitted several times that Venus is the better doubles player between the two. And Williams showed several flashes of that legendary form alongside Hailey Baptiste. The two Americans were taking on fellow compatriot Clervie Ngounoue and Canada's Eugenie Bouchard in the first round of the DC Open. Bouchard is in the midst of her own retirement tour, which will conclude later this month at the National Bank Open in Montreal. After a slow start, which saw them down 3-1, Williams and Baptiste rallied to win eleven of the match's last twelve games, ultimately securing a 6-3, 6-1 victory. Venus, who has been nursing several lower-body injuries over the past few years, especially around her knees, looked fresher and mobile than she had last year, hitting her legendary backhand cleanly and finishing multiple points at the net. While the two Americans have a second-round match coming up soon, Williams will now turn her attention to singles, where she will play another American, Peyton Stearns, in the round of 32. The 23-year-old is a rising star on the pro level after a decorated college career at Texas. Stearns is currently ranked No. 33 in the world and the clear favorite heading into this match. Williams has already made it clear that she is participating in the US Open in mixed doubles alongside Reilly Opelka. And, after one match, it certainly looks like Venus is in form to compete at this level in the doubles sphere. Tomorrow against Stearns will likely go a long way in determining whether Williams will seek a wild-card entry into the US Open main draw in singles. Overall, regardless of what happens, it's great to see an icon of the game still able to play and succeed at this level. Every match for Williams going forward is a celebration. Venus Williams drops hilarious quote after huge DC Open win

The post Venus Williams drops hilarious quote after huge DC Open win appeared first on ClutchPoints. The tennis world was shocked recently when Venus Williams announced that she was returning to the WTA Tour, taking a wild card into the main draw of the Mubabala Citi DC Open in Washington D.C. Williams was not officially retired, but she had not played a match since March of 2024 in Miami. Her last win came in August if 2023 in Cincinnati against Veronika Kudermetova, but that changed on Tuesday night. Williams came in as a huge underdog against American Peyton Stearns, the World No. 35, but she turned back the clock with excellent serving and ball striking from the baseline to pick up a straight-sets win, 6-3 6-4. After the match, Williams had a hilarious moment talking about her return during her interview with Rennae Stubbs. 'I had to come back for the insurance, because they informed me this year that I'm on cobra, Williams said with a laugh. 'So it's like, I got to get my benefits on. I started training!' Williams went down an early break in both sets to the Texas product, who recently made the semifinals at the WTA 1000 tournament in Rome on clay, but she stormed back with aggressive returning and clutch serving. Despite being 45 years old, Williams was still able to dig in and play some solid defense at times. The seven-time Grand Slam champion can continue to play in front of her home fans over the next month during the North American hard court swing. While she is not confirmed in any of these events, she would likely be able to secure a wild card at the WTA 1000 events in Montreal and Cincinnati before the final Grand Slam of the year at the U.S. Open in New York if she chooses to play. Williams is still alive in both singles and doubles after winning her opening round with partner Hailey Baptiste. The two of them will continue their quest for the title on Wednesday against the No. 2-seeded pair of Taylor Townsend and Shuai Zhang. The global superstar will have until Thursday before her next singles match, where she will square off with No. 5 seed Magdalena Frech in the Round of 16.
