Tax exemption scandal hits excise dept

LAHORE: A damning audit report has revealed widespread irregularities in the tax exemption process for 5-marla houses, with serious discrepancies and favouritism allegedly practiced by the excise department. According to the 2022-23 audit report, a staggering Rs 136.5 million in tax exemptions were granted under dubious circumstances, with many ineligible individuals exploiting the 5-marla house exemption clause to evade property taxes. The audit report highlights glaring lapses, including cases where houses exceeded the 5-marla limit, while others lacked necessary documentation to qualify for exemptions. The report slams the department for granting exemptions without proper field verification and scrutiny, suggesting collusion and negligence among officials that resulted in massive losses to the treasury. The authorities have been directed to ensure immediate recovery of the exempted amount and take action against those responsible. The audit report, tabled in the Punjab Assembly, recommends ensuring transparency in the tax exemption process to prevent such scandals in the future. Copyright Business Recorder, 2025

Suspect admits to killing lawyer Shamsul Islam in Karachi

Listen to article Suspect involved in the murder of renowned lawyer Shamsul Islam has confessed to the crime in a video statement, alleging a long-standing personal dispute and failure to receive justice, Express News reported on Saturday. According to the video, Imran Afridi said Islam had allegedly kidnapped, tortured, and killed his father over a financial dispute involving Rs3.5 million. He claimed the deceased lawyer then implicated his family in false cases, including terrorism charges against his brothers, and harassed women related to them through legal complications. Afridi stated that he received no justice through the legal system and therefore decided to take revenge himself. He added that he acted alone in the murder and no family member, friend, or relative was involved. He appealed to law enforcement not to harass his associates. Islam was shot dead a day earlier, and his son Daniyal was injured on the footsteps of Quran Academy in DHA phase VI when they were coming out after Friday prayers and a funeral. The incident occurred within the jurisdiction of the Darakhshan police station. According to police, the incident appears to be the result of a personal enmity. In the initial investigation, Afridi, son of former gunman Nabi Gul Afridi, was named as the prime suspect. A murder case of Nabi Gul had been registered at Boat Basin police station in 2021, and the family reportedly held Islam responsible for the killing.

SECP warns public against investment scheme of ‘MAG Ventures'

ISLAMABAD: The Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) has identified a prima facie fraudulent investment/deposit-taking scheme being aggressively promoted by Syed Mohsin Sultan Shah under the name 'MAG Ventures' through various social media platforms. The scheme lures the public with offers of business partnerships in meat exports to Gulf countries, promising guaranteed 'halal' monthly profits ranging from 5% to 12%, allegedly supported by a fatwa. Investment packages range from Rs. 100,000 to Rs. 10 million, with investors being assured security through stamp paper agreements and post-dated cheques. The scheme also claims plans to expand into multiple sectors, including real estate development, supermarkets, automotive trading, cafés, fashion and beauty, Apple product retail, and global operations with a headquarters in Dubai. To create an illusion of legitimacy, Syed Mohsin Sultan Shah has incorporated a company under the Companies Act, 2017 with a similar name, MAG Ventures (SMC-Private) Limited, in the trading sector, along with two other companies: MAG Organic Meats (SMC-Private) Limited and MAG Builders & Developers (SMC-Private) Limited. However, funds are being collected through the bank account of an unincorporated entity, 'Galaxy Traders,' and crypto currency wallets. The SECP strongly warns the general public NOT to invest or deposit funds with 'MAG Ventures,' 'Galaxy Traders,' MAG Ventures (SMC-Private) Limited, MAG Organic Meats (SMC-Private) Limited, MAG Builders & Developers (SMC-Private) Limited, or any other associated entity, as these entities are not authorized to collect deposits or offer investment schemes under any arrangement. The names of these companies have been included in the SECP's List of Companies Engaged in Unauthorized Activities, available on the official SECP website. The matter has also been referred to relevant investigation authorities for further action. The general public is reminded that a Certificate of Incorporation merely signifies the registration of a company and does not authorize it to raise deposits or launch investment schemes. Investors are urged to verify the legitimacy of any investment offer through the SECP's official channels before investing. Copyright Business Recorder, 2025
