Euro champs end Emus' World Cup medal dream
After a horror start, the Emus faced a 23-point deficit early in the third quarter at Switzerland's Lausanne Arena on Friday night.
They rallied and cut the margin to four points in the final period before Germany steadied through star duo Hannes Steinbach and Christian Anderson.
Luke Fennell (18 points) and Roman Siulepa (17) led the scoring for Australia, with Jacob Furphy (13, eight rebounds) also influential.
But their efforts weren't enough to steer the Emus to the semi-finals for the first time since an Andrew Bogut-led team won a historic gold medal in 2003.
Steinbach (16 points, 16 rebounds) and Anderson (18, eight) led the way for Germany, who will take on Slovenia in the semi-finals.
"In the second half, especially the third quarter, they came back with some big threes, but we found our rhythm again and finished the game," Steinbach said.
"It's a pretty big thing that we were able to show the character when we have a run against us.
"We stuck together and found a way to win."
Germany have never won a medal at the Under-19 World Cup and have reached the semi-finals for the first time since 1987, when they finished fourth.
"That's pretty amazing," NBA prospect Steinbach said.
"This group here is pretty good and we can achieve even more."
Slovenia, who were beaten 75-68 by Germany in the group stage, qualified for the last four with a dominant 79-55 win over Israel.
In the other side of the draw, eight-time champions USA take on Canada and New Zealand face hosts Switzerland in their quarter-finals on Sunday morning (AEST).

Australian NBA champion Alex Ducas has signed a one-year deal with the Brisbane Bullets in a major coup for their NBL rebuild. Part of Oklahoma City's 2024/25 championship-winning roster, 24-year-old Ducas had been linked with the Bullets for weeks before his arrival was confirmed Monday. A 201cm tall swingman originally from Geraldton, Ducas brings size and accuracy from deep to a Bullets side hoping to snap a six-year play-offs drought under new coach Stu Lash. "I'm pumped to be coming back to Australia and putting on a Bullets jersey," Ducas said. "Winning a title with OKC was unbelievable, but I'm ready to bring that energy and mindset to Brisbane." Ducas went undrafted in 2024 but signed a two-way contract at OKC to split his time between the Thunder's NBA side and their G-League affiliate. He played 21 games in his NBA rookie season but did not feature in the play-offs as the Thunder broke through for their first championship since 1979, when they were still based in Seattle as the Supersonics. Ducas nevertheless received a championship ring for his role in the squad, becoming just the ninth Australian-born player to taste NBA glory. Prior to his professional career, Ducas played college basketball at Saint Mary's, the alma mater of fellow Australian NBA players Patty Mills, Jock Landale and Matthew Dellavedova, winning the NCAA's West Coast Conference championship in 2024. Ducas' arrival at the Bullets comes after the side landed former NBL MVP Jaylen Adams, who has played the past two seasons with the Sydney Kings. Shaquille O'Neal's longstanding feud with Timberwolves centre Rudy Gobert took an even more drastic twist Thursday. The NBA Hall of Famer has traded barbs with Gobert for years, but this time it got personal, the NY Post reports. 'I f***ing hate Rudy Gobert,' said O'Neal on his podcast The Big Podcast with Shaq. 'Because that motherf***er making $250 million, (and) he don't deserve it, dawg. F*** that. 'As the president of The Big Man Alliance, you making big money, play like a f***ing big man. That's it. 'Throw some (elbows), knock some people out, don't be letting little white dudes from Denver dunk on you and talk sh*t to you.' Gobert, a four-time defensive player of the year, has averaged 11.7 rebounds, 12.6 points, 2.1 blocks and 0.7 steals per game in his 12-year career. O'Neal is hoping those accomplishments aren't enough to make the two Hall of Fame counterparts. 'If Rudy Gobert gets into the Hall of Fame, I'll wear this dress to the motherf***ing ceremony,' said O'Neal while holding up a picture of Charles Barkley wearing a dress in a WeightWatchers commercial. O'Neal has targeted Gobert since at least 2021, when he made fun of his lack of offensive ability. Those are the words Memphis Grizzlies management said to Will Magnay after his stint in the NBA Summer League. Magnay flew back into Tasmania earlier this week to meet his new teammates before a quick turnaround to jump on another plane to catch up with the Australian Boomers. The 27-year-old said he did everything he could to get a two-way contract with the NBA franchise. 'They were transparent with what they wanted and what they were looking for and I thought I put my foot in the right direction and the right thing,' Magnay said. 'Ultimately they went with someone just a bit younger, which is sport, you are always competing with someone for a bigger contract in a different league somewhere. 'I am just grateful to get the opportunity and happy to be back around Tassie and looking forward to the season ahead. 'It was a great experience, very grateful for them bringing me in and helping me with my rehab and looking after me and I was treated like one of their own.' Magnay will now head to Queensland for a Boomers training camp before the national team then jets off to the FIBA Asia Cup. The JackJumpers big man is among a 14-player squad who will face the University of Colorado in an exhibition game on July 31. '(Scott) Roth's got a new plan for managing me a little bit toward the mid-season and maybe backing me off some trainings a little bit and when that bridge comes, we'll cross it. 'I think there is a loose plan involved at the moment about just trying to keep me managed and healthy this season.'
