
With great AI power comes great skilling responsibility
We are now in a world where one person's skill can ripple through entire systems. A line of code, a prompt, or an automation script can decide who gets a loan, how a company is run, or how a generation learns to think. This is not science fiction. It is the present.
The question is no longer whether AI will change the world. It already is. The real question is who will shape that change.
That answer begins with how we skill people. Just like AI needs quality training data, people need quality thinking.
AI skilling has often been treated as a technical milestone. Learning how to write better prompts, use a new model, or automate a repetitive task. All of that is useful. But if that is where it stops, we are missing the bigger picture.
The people who use AI are not just executing tasks. They are making choices. They decide what gets automated, what is left out, and who is affected. And if they do not have the right awareness, even good intentions can lead to harm.
This is why we need a different kind of skilling. One that builds judgment, not just speed. One that encourages people to ask:
Should I be doing this?
Do I understand how this model was trained?
What happens if it gets something wrong?
These are not technical questions. They are questions of intent. They come from reflection, from exposure, from learning to pause before building.
And India, in particular, cannot afford to get this wrong.
We have the world's largest youth population, a fast-growing digital economy, and an enormous appetite for AI and automation. But scale alone does not create readiness. Not if we are teaching people how to use tools without helping them understand the weight of what they are creating.
This is not just about job-readiness. It is about decision-readiness.
Consider a chatbot trained to give mental health advice. It is launched in a regional language, without oversight. One day, it gives dangerous advice to someone in distress. Not because of bad intent, but because no one tested it well enough.
Or a resume screening tool built on data from a single metro. It starts excluding candidates from smaller towns, different backgrounds, or non-English-speaking schools. Quietly. Repeatedly.
Or a deepfake tool used for a prank. A video goes viral. Reputations are damaged. Lives are affected. And the person behind it does not understand what line they crossed.
These are not failures of code. They are failures of context.
And they could have been prevented with better skilling. Not just technical training, but education that includes ethics, systems thinking, real-world exposure, and long-term consequences.
This is India's opportunity. We already have the numbers. What we need is a generation that understands the responsibility that comes with building and using AI. A generation that is not just AI-literate, but AI-conscious.
We often wonder if humans can keep up with AI. But maybe the more urgent question is whether our judgment can grow fast enough to use AI well.
Because the tools will keep getting smarter. They will get cheaper. They will spread faster than anyone expects.
But what they end up doing will still depend on the people behind them.
Skilling, in this moment, is not just about employment. It is about values. It is not just an economic need. It is a civic one.
And how we teach, what we teach, will define far more than who gets hired next.

Geoffrey Hinton, regarded by many as the 'godfather of artificial intelligence' (AI), has warned that the technology could get out of hand if chatbots manage to develop their language. Currently, AI does its thinking in English, allowing developers to track what the technology is thinking, but there could come a point where humans might not understand what AI is planning to do, as per Mr Hinton. "Now it gets more scary if they develop their own internal languages for talking to each other," he said on an episode of the "One Decision" podcast that aired last month. "I wouldn't be surprised if they developed their own language for thinking, and we have no idea what they're thinking." Mr Hinton added that AI has already demonstrated that it can think terrible thoughts, and it is not unthinkable that the machines could eventually think in ways that humans cannot track or interpret. Warning about AI Mr Hinton laid the foundations for machine learning that is powering today's AI-based products and applications. However, the Nobel laureate grew wary of AI's future development and cut ties with his employer, Google, in order to speak more freely on the issue. "It will be comparable with the industrial revolution. But instead of exceeding people in physical strength, it's going to exceed people in intellectual ability. We have no experience of what it's like to have things smarter than us," said Mr Hinton at the time. "I am worried that the overall consequence of this might be systems more intelligent than us that eventually take control." Mr Hinton has been a big advocate of government regulation for the technology, especially given the unprecedented pace of development. His warning also comes in the backdrop of repeated instances of AI chatbots hallucinating thoughts. In April, OpenAI's internal tests revealed that its o3 and o4-mini AI models were hallucinating or making things up much more frequently than even the non-reasoning models, such as GPT-4o. The company said it did not have any idea why this was happening. In a technical report, OpenAI said, "more research is needed" to understand why hallucinations are getting worse as it scales up its reasoning models.

AI godfather warns AI could soon develop its own language and outsmart humans
Geoffrey Hinton, the man many call the Godfather of AI, has issued yet another cautionary note, and this time it sounds like something straight out of a scifi film. Speaking on the One Decision podcast, the Nobel Prizewinning scientist warned that artificial intelligence may soon develop a private language of its own, one that even its human creators won't be able to now, AI systems do what's called 'chain of thought' reasoning in English, so we can follow what it's doing,' Hinton explained. 'But it gets more scary if they develop their own internal languages for talking to each other.'That, he says, could take AI into uncharted and unnerving territory. Machines have already demonstrated the ability to produce 'terrible' thoughts, and there's no reason to assume those thoughts will always be in a language we can track. Hinton's words carry weight. He is, after all, the 2024 Nobel Physics laureate whose early work on neural networks paved the way for today's deep learning models and largescale AI systems. Yet he says he didn't fully appreciate the dangers until much later in his career.'I should have realised much sooner what the eventual dangers were going to be,' he admitted. 'I always thought the future was far off and I wish I had thought about safety sooner.' Now, that delayed realisation fuels his of Hinton's biggest fears lies in how AI systems learn. Unlike humans, who must share knowledge painstakingly, digital brains can copy and paste what they know in an instant.'Imagine if 10,000 people learned something and all of them knew it instantly, that's what happens in these systems,' he explained on BBC collective, networked intelligence means AI can scale its learning at a pace no human can match. Current models such as GPT4 already outstrip humans when it comes to raw general knowledge. For now, reasoning remains our stronghold – but that advantage, says Hinton, is shrinking he is vocal, Hinton says others in the industry are far less forthcoming. 'Many people in big companies are downplaying the risk,' he noted, suggesting their private worries aren't reflected in their public statements. One notable exception, he says, is Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis, whom Hinton credits with showing genuine interest in tackling these for Hinton's highprofile exit from Google in 2023, he says it wasn't a protest. 'I left Google because I was 75 and couldn't program effectively anymore. But when I left, maybe I could talk about all these risks more freely,' he governments roll out initiatives like the White House's new 'AI Action Plan', Hinton believes that regulation alone won't be real task, he argues, is to create AI that is 'guaranteed benevolent', a tall order, given that these systems may soon be thinking in ways no human can fully follow.- Ends
