Federal govt allocates RM8.79 bln for 86 Sabah projects under 12MP
The funding, managed by the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA), will be disbursed until June 2025.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, who is also the minister in charge of PETRA, highlighted the importance of addressing water and energy challenges in Sabah.
He stated, 'Sabah has received a fairly large allocation from the federal government ... it is our commitment to resolve two key issues in Sabah: water and energy. Because without energy and water, there can be no economic growth in Sabah.'
Fadillah made these remarks during the PETRA Engagement Session with Sabah Media 2025, emphasizing the government's dedication to Sabah's development.
He stressed that the state's progress is a shared responsibility between the federal and state governments.
He added, 'With strong federal-state relations, we can build a more prosperous, just as well as sustainable state and country, with the support of a free and trustworthy media and a united people.'
The engagement session also aimed to strengthen ties between PETRA and the media.
Fadillah noted, 'We organised this session to foster closer ties and strengthen the relationship between the media and PETRA's top management.' – Bernama

KUCHING: Sarawak sees no need to pursue nuclear power as part of its energy mix given its abundant renewable energy resources, said Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. He said Sarawak's situation differs significantly from Peninsular Malaysia, which still relies heavily on coal-fired power generation and is now exploring alternatives, including nuclear energy. Advertisement 'Peninsular Malaysia is looking for suitable energy sources because they are still using coal. Coal is not a technology to generate energy; it's just a source. So, they are seeking options, one of them being nuclear,' he said. Abang Johari was responding to Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof's recent statement that Malaysia would review its nuclear energy prospects as a potential power source. 'I believe our Deputy Prime Minister (Fadillah) has every right to explore nuclear technology, especially for Peninsular Malaysia. But in Sarawak, we already have hydro, gas combined cycle and solar. Based on these resources, we don't need nuclear,' he said, after officially launching the International Energy Week (IEW) 2025 at Borneo Convention Centre, Tuesday. Abang Johari said Sarawak is focused on generating clean, renewable energy and has set ambitious targets based on its available resources. 'We're targeting 10 gigawatts by 2030 and 15 gigawatts by 2035. Based on current projections, these are achievable using our hydropower, solar and gas,' he said. Abang Johari said Sarawak is already working with renewable energy companies, particularly in the solar sector and would continue to expand its capacity as technology improves. 'Sarawak will become a hub for renewable energy. So nuclear is irrelevant at this point because we have our own sources.' He also highlighted Sarawak's long-term interest in emerging technologies like fusion energy which, he said, could offer safer and cheaper alternatives to nuclear power. 'One of the technologies being developed now is fusion energy, which uses hydrogen molecules to produce energy. It's probably cheaper and safer than nuclear, and also produces hydrogen water. That gives us a strategic advantage,' he said. However, the Premier stressed the importance of thorough research and not rushing into any decisions. 'Let's wait first. Let's do the research. No need to be in a hurry. We have plans. But ultimately, we need solutions to the climate problem.' Abang Johari pointed out the severity of global warming, noting extreme heat waves in China and Japan exceeding 42°C, and warned that further increases could threaten human survival. 'That's why we are looking for a solution. But Alhamdulillah, our Government, our country and our people are committed to the environment. Malakoff inks MoU with EESB to develop green power projects in Sarawak
KUCHING: Independent power producer Malakoff Corp Bhd today formalised a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with real estate and construction group Evergreen Earth Sdn Bhd (EESB) to develop Sarawak's green power projects. The MoU exchange ceremony was held in conjunction with International Energy Week (IEW) 2025 at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching. It was witnessed by Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, who is also the Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation. The MoU was exchanged between Malakoff's business development head, Shaja Ibrahim, and EESB director, Datuk Mohamad Danel Abong. In a joint statement, Malakoff and EESB said the collaboration covers feasibility studies, site assessments, project development strategies and local partnership models related to solar photovoltaic (PV) and other renewable energy (RE) ventures. "The collaboration will also encompass the sharing of technical expertise, regulatory insights and market intelligence, as well as coordinated efforts to engage with relevant authorities and stakeholders to secure necessary approvals and grid integration. "These joint efforts are aligned with Sarawak's Post COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030 and Malaysia's National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), supporting the country's long-term sustainability and clean energy goals," said the statement. Malakoff managing director and chief executive officer Anwar Syahrin Abdul Ajib said green power projects represent a significant step towards accelerating Malaysia's energy transition. "By supporting Sarawak's efforts to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and diversify its renewable energy mix, we are contributing to the development of a more sustainable and future-ready energy ecosystem. "These projects are expected to deliver strong economic value through job creation, upskilling of local talent and the development of rural infrastructure. This partnership builds on Malakoff's broader RE progress, which includes a total generating capacity of 198 megawatt (MW) across solar, waste-to-energy and small hydropower assets," he said. Anwar Syahrin also said that as of June this year, Malakoff's rooftop solar capacity reached 63.6 MW, while in 2024, its RE portfolio generated 67.0 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of clean electricity.

Water, energy issues: Petra Squad visits five key sites

Kota Kinabalu: Water supply issues, affecting students at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), have drawn the attention of the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (Petra), with the university becoming the first location visited under the Petra Squad's initiative to assess water and energy challenges in Sabah on Monday. The on-ground assessment, aimed at gathering direct feedback, was attended by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, who is also Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister. Advertisement He was accompanied by his deputy, Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir and Petra Secretary-General Datuk Mad Zaidi Mohd Karli, with the visit taking place from 11am to 5pm. In addition to UMS, the survey covered four other key locations: the Sungai Damai Basin 8 Flood Mitigation Plan (RTB) in Likas; the Kota Kinabalu Main Inlet Substation in Tanjung Aru; Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) to review a rooftop solar installation; and the Putatan Phase I Sewerage Scheme project in Putatan. At UMS, Fadillah said the Federal Government is committed to assisting the university in addressing frequent water disruptions, through a short-term intervention plan valued at RM1 million. The initiative will be implemented in collaboration with the Sabah Water Department, Petra and UMS. The plan is expected to benefit more than 3,000 students, particularly those residing at the Tun Mustapha and Tun Fuad Residential Colleges, which are among the most affected by water supply interruptions. 'This will involve the construction of a dedicated distribution channel to connect to UMS' existing groundwater source, the addition of an underground water tank with a capacity of 0.13 million litres and the installation of automated valve controls,' he said. Also present during the UMS visit were Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir and UMS vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Kasim Mansor. At the Sungai Damai Basin 8 RTB, Fadillah said RM48 million in development funding has been allocated for the flood mitigation project, which commenced in September 2023 and has reached 54 per cent physical completion. The project includes upgrading the drainage system, constructing pump houses, road culverts and flood control gates. Upon completion, expected in July 2026, it is projected to protect around 17,500 residents from flood risks. The visit continued at the Kota Kinabalu Main Inlet Substation, with the handover of seven energy sector projects in Sabah and Labuan. These projects, implemented by the Sabah Electricity Supply Special Project Team (SESST), involve a total allocation of over RM260 million. A total of 60,434 consumers in Sabah and Labuan will benefit from improved electricity services through infrastructure upgrades, including substation enhancements, new grid connections and safety systems in Sipitang, Beaufort, Tanjung Aru, Kota Kinabalu, Ranau and Sandakan, as well as Labuan. Meanwhile, at KKIA, a rooftop solar installation, under the Solar for Self-Consumption initiative, comprises 8,400 photovoltaic panels across three buildings. Now regulated by the Sabah Energy Commission, the system is expected to generate 5,325.7 MWh of clean energy annually and reduce carbon emissions by 4,046 metric tonnes, in line with Malaysia's target of a 70 per cent renewable energy mix and broader ESG commitments. Fadillah and the Petra Squad concluded their inspection with a visit to the Putatan Sewerage Scheme Phase I project. The RM134 million initiative, which began in December 2020, has reached 69.85 per cent completion, and is expected to be fully completed by March 2026.
