Odisha paper leak: Top exam agency official who made ‘100 calls after office hours' held
The Crime Branch on Sunday arrested Nihar Ranjan Mohanty, vice president of the BSE — the agency that conducts the OTET — for his alleged involvement. Earlier, seven persons, including a BSE data entry operator, Jitan Moharana, and several teachers were arrested in the case.
The OTET, which was scheduled to be held on July 20, was cancelled on the evening of July 19 after a handwritten copy of the question paper went viral on social media. It affected over 75,000 candidates. In Odisha, clearing the test is mandatory for appointment and promotion of teachers in government and private schools at the elementary level.
Crime Branch DG Vinaytosh Mishra said even though Moharana had no direct official dealings with Mohanty, there were over 100 calls between them beyond office hours. Earlier, Moharana was kept out of the examination process over his suspicious conduct in the past.
'Neither did Mohanty have any relation with Moharana, nor was there any direct official interaction. Despite this, there were over 100 calls between them in the past three months. This was the primary grounds for suspicion to zero in on the board vice president,' said the Crime Branch DG.
As per Crime Branch sources, Mohanty's role was to set the question papers. Before printing, the Bhopal-based press had sent a password-protected copy of the question paper to Mohanty. He is accused of giving Moharana access to it and sharing it with two teachers, who sold it to others.

On July 22, the Gujarat ATS had apprehended four persons — Fardin Sheikh, Saifulla Qureshi, Mohammad Faiq and Zeeshan Ali — for their involvement in advancing the agenda of the AQIS through social media platforms by allegedly undertaking Ghazwa-e-Hind, provoking India's Muslim community to engage in violent acts against non-Muslims, advocating armed revolt against the elected government, and pushing for an Islamic Sharia-based regime. Legal action was initiated under Sections 13, 18, 38, and 39 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), 1967, and Sections 113, 152, 196, and 61 of the BNS. Then on July 27, Shama Parveen, the alleged key accused of this module, was arrested from Karnataka's Bengaluru. On Tuesday, a statement from the ATS said, 'During preliminary verification of information related to the said offense, surveillance of social media accounts had revealed that the accused Zeeshan Ali is in possession of a semi-automatic pistol. Based on the facts revealed during the intensive interrogation of the accused Zeeshan Ali by the Investigating Officer, DySP Virjeetsinh Parmar and his team, accused voluntarily disclosed the facts that he was indeed in possession of an illegal semi-automatic pistol.'

The reports of Pakistani firing along the Line of Control came from Mankote sector in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch district Days after the Indian Army foiled an infiltration bid along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch, there were reports of crossborder firing by Pakistan in the Mankote sector of the district on Tuesday. According to sources, the firing from across the border was unprovoked but the Indian side retaliated effectively. The army had said the operation on July 30, conducted under the code name 'ShivShakti', was a major setback to nefarious designs of Pakistan-sponsored terrorist organisations that are constantly abetting acts of terror in Jammu and Kashmir. SC grants bail to brother of Bhopal-based sadhvi in fraud case
New Delhi, Aug 5 (PTI) The Supreme Court on Tuesday granted bail to the brother of Bhopal-based 'sadhvi", who is accused in a Rs 90 lakh fraud case following the death of the 'mahant" of Ram Janaki Temple in Chhindwara district of Madhya Pradesh. A bench of Justices M M Sundresh and N Kotiswar Singh said bail was an accused's right. The top court was hearing a plea filed by Harsh Raghuvanshi challenging the cancellation of bail granted to him by the Madhya Pradesh High Court. Advocate Ashwani Dubey, appearing for the accused, submitted there were no criminal antecedents of the petitioner and he was implicated as an accused during the investigation. He said the accused was not involved in commission of offence and his name was added as a co-accused at the time of investigation. The counsel for the Madhya Pradesh government opposed the plea. The high court on May 19 cancelled the anticipatory bail granted to Sadhvi Laxmi Das and cancelled the regular bail granted to her brother in the case. Sadhvi Laxmi Das alias Reena Raghuvanshi was granted anticipatory bail on December 20, 2024 on the condition that she would deposit the amount equal to money allegedly siphoned off by her, i.e., Rs 90 lakh in the bank as security money. According to the police, Mahant Kanak Dass Maharaj died in a road accident on April 17, 2023. He had a savings account at State Bank of India which had a deposit of Rs 88,74,081. He had not named anyone as his nominee in the account. It was alleged that Das, who the mahant's disciple, embezzled the amount with the intention to cheat. The police booked her under Sections 420 (cheating), 403 (dishonest misappropriation of property) and 404 (dishonest misappropriation of property) of IPC.
