
LG Innotek bets big on digital keys to drive W1.5tr in auto sales by 2030
LG Innotek is stepping up its growth efforts with a next-generation digital key solution, positioning it as a central pillar in achieving 1.5 trillion won ($1.09 billion) in annual sales from automotive connectivity businesses by 2030.
The Korean electronic parts supplier unveiled this vision during a media seminar Tuesday at its headquarters in western Seoul, where it showcased its latest advancements in digital key technology.
'Our next-generation digital key solution is an innovation built on LG Innotek's proprietary wireless communication technology, delivering differentiated value to customers,' said Yoo Byaeng-kuk, head of the company's automotive components business unit, during the seminar.
'It (the 1.5 trillion won target) is not just wishful thinking. It's grounded in orders we have already secured. We aim to become the world's No. 1 supplier of digital key solutions by 2030.'
LG Innotek's digital key solution replaces traditional smart keys with a smartphone-based system that uses Bluetooth and near-field communication to unlock vehicle doors.
In 2024 alone, the company secured orders for 14 vehicle models equipped with an upgraded version featuring ultrawideband technology, which minimizes external interference between the key and the vehicle to enhance security.
Looking ahead, LG Innotek plans to further advance its digital key with a high-precision 3D positioning algorithm and proprietary radar technology, targeting mass production by 2028.
The 3D algorithm reduces the margin of error of 20–30 centimeters in current products to just 10 centimeters. It enables precise detection of whether the user is inside or outside the car, or near specific doors or the trunk, the company said.
Additionally, the radar system enhances safety by sending smartphone alerts in case of external impacts or if a child is left inside the vehicle.
'There are only us and one or two companies in Europe in the world capable of developing a digital key that can recognize positioning within 10 centimeters,' said Nam Hyoung-ki, head of LG Innotek's connectivity development department.
Nam added that the company is working to expand the digital key modules to support autonomous parking, leveraging its high precision to replace multiple complex components that currently handle separate functions.
LG Innotek's enhanced focus on digital key technology comes as the global market is projected to grow from the current 600 billion won to 3.3 trillion won by 2030.
While premium vehicle segments already show an adoption rate of around 70 percent, the company expects broader uptake across other segments, driven by the expansion of car-sharing and leasing services increasing demand for keyless solutions.
With 83 percent of its first-quarter sales of 4.98 trillion won coming from optical solutions, its traditional core business, the company is expanding its portfolio to include the automotive electronic parts sector to capitalize on the anticipated self-driving car boom.

'Southeast Asia stands out as a crucial market for us and continues to grow,' said Kim Jong-woo, chief operating officer of LS Electric, during a media briefing at the company's exhibition booth on Wednesday. 'In Vietnam, where we expanded our production facility three years ago, we are now increasing its manufacturing capacity. Our goal in Southeast Asia is to win more local projects by expanding local production capabilities, like we've done in Vietnam.' Highlighting 'K-electricity' as a new buzzword following 'K-food' and 'K-culture,' Kim added that LS Electric aims to strengthen its production, engineering and service maintenance capabilities to drive both organic and inorganic growth in the ASEAN market, which also serves as a strategic export hub for North America and the Middle East. LS Electric was the first among Korean heavy electrical equipment manufacturers to enter Vietnam, making its debut in the 1990s. It has since maintained dominance in the local low-voltage power equipment market, boasting a 45 percent market share as of last year. Tran Viet Cuong, deputy director of Consrich Vietnam, a power distribution panel manufacturer, said his company has maintained business ties with LS Electric for over 20 years, primarily due to its strong brand recognition. 'Although we've also used products from HD Hyundai Electric, LS Electric's Korean rival, which is more competitively priced, LS still has a stronger presence in Vietnam,' Cuong noted. 'LS Electric also stands out for its delivery speed. Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, while Japan's Mitsubishi faced production delays, LS maintained efficient operations through its local distribution network.' Building on the trust of its client companies, LS Electric is pioneering the next-generation electric solutions market in Vietnam. This sector is also in line with the Vietnamese government's commitment to expanding power infrastructure as a key driver of economic growth. Notably, the power equipment supplier focuses on 'energy storage systems,' a crucial component for stabilizing the rising power demand. The ESS largely consists of a battery and power conversion systems. 'While battery manufacturers are venturing into the ESS sector, it has traditionally been the domain of electric companies, which are in charge of the PCS to ensure stable management of the power system,' said an LS Electric official. LS Electric's Bac Ninh facility in Hanoi supplies PCS for Samsung SDI's Samsung Battery Box, a utility-scale ESS that is fully contained within a standardized shipping container. LS Electric also looks to provide smart factory solutions, already integrated in its Cheongju plant in South Korea, for Vietnamese manufacturing companies, including real estate developers. Last year, the company signed an agreement to build a smart factory for Becamex's industrial complex in Binh Duong. 'We are already targeting smart factory markets in Europe, particularly Germany,' said another LS Electric official. 'Our solutions enable full automation of the equipment, with facility data being uploaded via (Internet of Things) for monitoring within a digital twin. This setup allows for remote quality inspections and operations. It can improve the efficiency of the equipment by accumulating and analyzing collected data.'

Seoul shares end lower as Fed rate-cut hopes wane
Seoul shares closed lower Wednesday as weaker-than-expected US inflation data prompted investors to trim their bets on the Federal Reserve's rate cuts. The Korean won fell against the US dollar. The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index fell 28.9 points, or 0.9 percent, to finish at 3,186.38. Trade volume was moderate at 525.37 million shares worth 11.09 trillion won ($8 billion). Decliners outnumbered gainers 704 to 189. Institutions sold a net 552.8 billion won worth of stocks, offsetting net purchases by foreigners and individuals of 26.79 billion won and 429.99 billion won, respectively. US inflation rose 2.7 percent in June, below market expectations, even as companies began passing some tariff-related costs on to consumers. In addition to the weaker-than-expected inflation data, President Donald Trump's latest tariff threats also remained a concern for investors, analysts said. "But Nvidia's planned resumption of H20 AI chip sales to China boosted demand for chip stocks, helping limit Kospi losses," said Hwang Joon-ho, an analyst at Sangsangin Investment & Securities Co. In Seoul, large-cap stocks were mixed. Market bellwether Samsung Electronics rose 1.57 percent to 64,700 won, but chip giant SK hynix fell 0.84 percent to 296,000 won. US chip thaw boosts outlook for Samsung, SK hynix
Nvidia's resumed China exports expected to drive demand for Korea-made HBM chips Anticipation is growing for a boost to Korean chipmakers Samsung Electronics and SK hynix, as the US reversal of restrictions on Nvidia's AI chip sales to China is expected to revive demand for their high-bandwidth memory, or HBM, chips. On Tuesday, US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick confirmed that the government had approved Nvidia's sales of its H20 graphics processing units to China. He explained that the decision was part of broader negotiations with Beijing on rare earth materials and a strategic effort to make China reliant on American technology. 'We don't sell them our best stuff, not our second-best stuff, not even our third-best,' Lutnick said, noting that the H20 is Nvidia's 'fourth-best' chip. US President Donald Trump had previously restricted exports of the H20 chips to China in April, as part of efforts to curb Beijing's access to cutting-edge American technology. 'You want to sell the Chinese enough that their developers get addicted to the American technology stack. That's the thinking,' Lutnick added. The restriction had left Nvidia with unsold inventory, resulting in a $4.5 billion charge and a $2.5 billion hit to its quarterly revenue. With Nvidia now set to resume sales in China, Korean chipmakers are expected to benefit from the renewed demand for HBMs. These critical memory components are used in AI accelerators and high-performance servers, enabling significantly faster data transfer compared to conventional DRAM. Nvidia's H20 chip features fourth-generation HBM3 and the latest fifth-generation HBM3E. While it may lag in training AI models, it performs well in inference — the AI process of generating answers to users — which is currently the fastest-growing segment in the AI chip market. Samsung has reportedly been supplying HBM3 for Nvidia's H20 since last year. However, the US trade restrictions appear to have impacted the company's performance, with its operating profit plunging 55.9 percent on-year in the April-June period. Although Samsung's fifth-generation HBM3E has yet to pass Nvidia's quality certification, the resumption of H20 exports to China is expected to help the company expand HBM shipments. Samsung also stands to benefit from Nvidia's upcoming low-end AI chip for the Chinese market, known as the B40, expected to launch later this year. Unlike the H20, the B40 will be equipped with GDDR7, a next-generation graphics DRAM capable of processing more data at once than conventional DRAM. Samsung was the first in the industry to develop a 12-nanometer, 24-gigabit GDDR7 chip. SK hynix, the global leader in HBM market share and the first company in the world to supply HBM3E to Nvidia, is also expected to see a sales boost. 'It's a short-term positive development for the AI GPU and HBM sectors that Nvidia is now able to resume exports to China,' said Ryu Hyung-keun, an analyst at Daishin Securities. 'SK hynix is expected to benefit in the near term from the resumption of H20 shipments.' Sohn In-joon, an analyst at Heungkuk Securities, said the export resumption is likely to benefit SK hynix more significantly, but could also offer Samsung an opportunity to pass Nvidia's qualification test for its HBM3E chips amid tight supply conditions. Industry officials are also expressing hope that the latest approval of Nvidia's exports could signal a broader shift in US trade policy, potentially paving the way for a further easing of chip export restrictions to China. 'The reopening of the Chinese market sends a positive signal for the entire industry. It presents a major opportunity by expanding the demand base for semiconductors,' one industry official said.
