Brazil's XP sues short seller Grizzly Research in New York, alleges defamation
NEW YORK, July 7 (Reuters) - The Brazilian fintech company XP (XP.O), opens new tab filed a U.S. lawsuit on Monday accusing the short seller Grizzly Research of defamation over a March 12 report, opens new tab accusing XP of running a "Madoff-like Ponzi scheme." In a complaint filed in federal court in Manhattan, XP said it suffered more than $100 million in harm to its business and reputation from the report, with many longtime clients, investors and business partners withdrawing their funds. It accused Grizzly and its owner Siegfried Eggert of "brazenly, maliciously, and recklessly" publishing the report, with a goal of driving down XP's stock price so they could profit on short positions. Grizzly could not be immediately reached by phone or email after business hours, and its website was not accepting messages seeking comment on the lawsuit. Lawyers for XP did not immediately respond to requests for alternative contact information. XP's press office in Brazil declined to comment. Short sellers sell borrowed shares that they hope to repurchase later at lower prices, to replenish lenders, and pocket the difference in price. Other short sellers have been sued in the United States over their alleged defamatory reports. In its report, Grizzly said XP's alleged Ponzi scheme involved derivatives sales to retail clients, which were then funneled through special funds and misrepresented as proprietary trading profit. Grizzly said the alleged scheme was "likely to involve nefarious activities," and XP would be unprofitable without it. XP called Grizzly's claims of impropriety "demonstrably false" because its Gladius and Coliseu funds were proprietary and had no outside investors, and the challenged transactions complied with applicable Brazilian law. Shares of XP fell 5.5% to $14.14 on March 12 in New York. They closed down 32 cents at $19.48 on Monday. The lawsuit seeks unspecified compensatory and punitive damages. Madoff refers to the late swindler Bernard Madoff. The case is XP inc et al v Grizzly Research LLC et al, U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York, No. 25-05564.

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr's legendary father breaks silence on son's ICE arrest over 'cartel links'
Boxing great Julio Cesar Chavez Sr has protested his son's innocence after he was arrested by ICE agents last week over his alleged connection to the Sinaloa Cartel. Just days after his defeat against Jake Paul in Anaheim, California at the end of June, Chavez Jr was arrested 27 miles away in Los Angeles for overstaying his US visa and lying on a green-card application, according to the Department of Homeland Security. In Mexico, the 39-year-old son and namesake of the country's greatest ever boxer is also wanted on allegations of drug and gun trafficking. The DHS said last Thursday that they are 'processing him for expedited removal from the United States' due to a warrant in Mexico. As for the timing of the arrest, they claimed Chavez Jr's June 28 loss to Paul occurred one day after he became determined to stay in the country illegally. Mexico has since confirmed that it issued an arrest warrant for Chavez Jr in 2023. The country's officials and the DHS 'started the corresponding procedure for his extradition to Mexico,' it was revealed last week. Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum has also expressed hope that he will be imprisoned upon return. Amid plans to deport his son back to their homeland, Chavez Sr - one of the greatest fighters in boxing history - has claimed his son is innocent and that he is by no means a criminal. 'It's complicated, there's a lot of talk, but we're calm because we know my son's innocence,' the 62-year-old told the El Heraldo newspaper. 'My son will be anything you want, anything, but he is not a criminal and less everything he's being accused of.' Alejandro Gertz Manero, Mexico's Attorney General, said on Sunday that the investigation against Chavez Jr started in 2019 after a complaint filed by US authorities against the Sinaloa Cartel for organized crime, human trafficking, arms trafficking, and drug trafficking. 'He knows a lot of people, we live in Culiacan , it would be impossible not to know all of the people that are doing illicit stuff, but that does not mean nothing,' Chavez Sr said. 'In my time I met everybody, and they did not come after me.' Chavez senior was considered one of the best Mexican boxers of all time; a world champion at three divisions. In the 1980s and '90s he was a huge celebrity who mixed with drug dealers. He claimed in the past to have been friends with drug lords Amada Carrillo Fuentes and Joaquin 'El Chapo' Guzman. Gertz Manero said Chavez Junior's lawyers have requested at least five injunctions in Mexico, which have been rejected because the boxer is still in the United States. 'Lawyers in the United States are working to see if he stays there, and we're prepared if he comes here,' Chavez senior said. 'We'll fight under Mexican law if he´s transferred here.' Chavez has spent considerable time in his native Mexico and the US in recent years, but according to the Department of Homeland Security, his tourist visa expired in February of 2024. The agency further claims Chavez filed several fraudulent statements while applying for permanent residence in April of 2024 after marrying Frida Muñoz, who is related to imprisoned Sinaloa cartel kingpin Joaquin 'El Chapo' Guzman. Chavez's father has openly spoken about his own relationships with the Sinaloa Cartel and, in particular, 'El Chapo'. In a podcast with journalist Javier Alarcon in 2021, he revealed: 'Not just El Chapo, I've met all the most wanted drug traffickers, like Amado Carrillo, El Azul [Esparragoza], and El Mayo [Zambada].

Jeffrey Epstein victim's diary ‘contradicts' FBI blackmail claims
The Jeffrey Epstein victim Virginia Giuffre claimed in her diary that the sex offender taped her being 'abused by other men' to use for blackmail, seemingly contradicting a memorandum by the FBI and the justice department. The memo, published on Monday, stated that there was 'no credible evidence found that Epstein blackmailed prominent individuals as part of his actions'. Giuffre, who died by suicide at her home in Perth, Australia, in April, had left behind a diary of her final months, which her family shared with The Times to tell the 'full story' of her life. • What really happened to Virginia Giuffre? 'I used to be watched by Epstein's hidden cameras, which I have seen myself,' she wrote in one undated entry. 'The FBI have the archive footage showing me being abused by other men, used as blackmail.' Virginia Giuffre's diary entry on the tapes President Trump's justice department and the FBI, which had promised 'complete transparency' on the Epstein case, concluded on Monday that they found no evidence that the convicted sex offender and disgraced financier blackmailed powerful figures, kept a 'client list' or was murdered. Giuffre became Epstein's most prominent accuser, winning multiple lawsuits against him and his estate for sexual abuse and trafficking. Questions have been asked about what was recovered from FBI raids on Epstein's various homes after his arrest in 2019. Giuffre took her own life in April EMILY MICHOT/MIAMI HERALD/TRIBUNE NEWS SERVICE/GETTY IMAGES Large black binders holding labelled CDs, as well as hard drives, were discovered in several rooms in his eight-storey Upper East Side apartment in Manhattan, including in a so-called massage room. Federal prosecutors said CDs found in a safe featured sexual photographs of women and under-age girls. • Maga backlash over 'botched' Jeffrey Epstein investigation Investigators were reported to have found multiple hidden cameras in Epstein's properties, including in his Manhattan townhouse and his private island, Little Saint James, in the US Virgin Islands. At least one other victim, the Briton Sarah Ransome, has claimed that Epstein secretly filmed sexual encounters between victims and high-profile figures to use for blackmail.
