An outbreak of Legionnaires' disease has struck London, Ont., with 43 confirmed cases and one fatality so far this year. The outbreak is mainly concentrated in a six kilometre radius in the city's southeast neighbourhoods.
As of right now the source of the outbreak is still being investigated, but officials are telling people to be careful, and to regularly maintain and clean their cooling equipment to prevent further outbreaks. Here's what you need to know about Legionnaires' disease and how it spreads.
Legionnaires' disease is a serious respiratory illness that can result in a serious chest infection or pneumonia. It is caused by a type of bacteria that lives in water called Legionella. Most people who catch Legionnaires' disease breathe in the bacteria from water, and it is more common in warmer weather.
The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) says that Legionnaires' disease symptoms usually develop two to 14 days after exposure to Legionella bacteria, and can last several months .The symptoms are similar to pneumonia.
They include: cough, fever, headache, muscle aches and shortness of breath. Other symptoms, like confusion, diarrhea or nausea can also occur, according to the U.S. Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Most people exposed to the bacteria do not get sick, but there are those who are at a higher risk.Those most at risk include the elderly, smokers, individuals with chronic lung or kidney disease, diabetes, or weakened immune systems.
According to PHAC, people in certain occupations — such as those who do maintenance work on large air conditioning systems — may also be at an increased risk.
The treatment for Legionnaires' disease is done through antibiotics, and most cases recover. The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) says that earlier treatment helps to reduce the chance of serious complications.
Legionella bacteria are found in natural water sources such as lakes and rivers. Generally, the amount of this bacteria in these environments doesn't lead to disease. However, when the bacteria gets into building water systems and grows, it poses a risk to one's health.
The bacteria may grow due to certain conditions. According to PHAC, these are 'stagnant water, warm water temperature (20 to 50 degrees Celsius), or the presence of biofilm, scale, and sediment.' As a result, the bacteria could be found in cooling towers, humidifiers, plumbing systems, or hot tubs.
When the contaminated water is released into the air, through mist or droplets, the bacteria becomes airborne and people may inhale it, resulting in infection.
The CDC says that Legionnaires' disease is not spread from person to person.
In public areas and buildings, owners of cooling towers or centrally installed misters or humidifiers should follow manufacturers' instructions regarding maintenance to prevent the growth of the bacteria. CCOHS says that, 'cooling towers and evaporative condensers should be inspected and thoroughly cleaned at least once a year.'
At home, PHAC says individuals can 'reduce the risks by proper maintenance of mist-producing devices, such as shower heads, hot tubs, whirlpool bathtubs and humidifiers.' It is important to disinfect these devices regularly, following the manufacturer's instructions.
With warmer weather creating ideal conditions for Legionella to thrive, simple steps like maintaining water systems can go a long way in keeping communities safe.
In a press release, the Middlesex-London Health Unit said they are working with Public Health Ontario 'to investigate and identify the source of the outbreak.' Environmental sampling is being done, but because Legionella can be found in different places, this might take time. In the meantime, they ask that the public clean and maintain their cooling equipment.

With cases climbing again, you might be wondering why a "winter virus" keeps returning in the heat, and what you should be doing right now to protect yourself. "A couple of months ago, experts were uncertain about a summer wave," said Jodie Guest, PhD, an epidemiologist at Emory University in Atlanta who has tracked COVID since the start of the pandemic. "The low levels of respiratory illness in spring 2025 and stable variant landscape suggested a quiet summer." But three key indicators now have COVID watchdogs sounding the alarm: a new virus strain, increasing wastewater levels, and emergency room visit upticks in parts of the U.S. The CDC now lists the "COVID-19 epidemic trend" as growing or likely growing for more than half of U.S. states. The strongest indicators were seen in Arkansas, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Virginia. Here's what to know about summer COVID, and how to protect yourself – especially if you have a summer vacation or travel coming up. I thought COVID was a big risk during flu season. Did something change? No, COVID has always had two waves, about six months apart – one in the summer and the other at the height of winter "respiratory season," when flu and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) also rage. The winter wave typically peaks sometime between "December and February, coinciding with colder weather and increased indoor gatherings," said Guest, senior vice chair of the Department of Epidemiology at Emory's Rollins School of Public Health. "Summer waves have occurred sporadically, often driven by new variants or waning immunity." Here's when COVID peaked the past three summers: 2022: Around Aug. 1 2023: Around Sept. 30 2024: Around Aug. 31 This timing has prompted some experts to theorize that summer waves may be linked to people spending more time indoors with air conditioning during the height of summer heat. Why are there two COVID waves, but influenza only spikes once per year? Some scientists point to rapid mutations and waning immunity from past infection or vaccination. "A big chunk of people will get sick in a wave, and they'll have pretty good immunity to that particular variant, and that immunity is enough to sort of stop that wave in its tracks," said Emily Landon, MD, an infectious disease specialist at UChicago Medicine in Illinois. The virus then needs to change enough to evade existing immunity before another cycle starts back up. A second theory suggests there are three distinct groups of people – a summer group, a winter group, and a group that gets infected twice a year. The idea is based on the idea that people vary in how long they're immune after infection, vaccination, or both. Scientists still need more data to know for sure, "but the bottom line is we're certainly seeing a big increase in cases in the summer and a big increase of cases in the winter," Landon said. Is this surge caused by the new variant? Yes, partly. NB.1.8.1 – or Nimbus – has been on the rise in Asia recently, and it now accounts for as many as 43% of new cases in the U.S., up from 24% at the beginning of June, according to CDC data. It's the variant known for a " razor blade" sore throat symptom, although it doesn't appear to cause more severe illness than other versions of the virus, Landon said. This geographic pattern has become pretty set: A rising variant in Asia or Europe typically foreshadows a rise in the U.S., said Sabrina A. Assoumou, MD, MPH, an infectious disease doctor and professor at Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine. Another regional clue: "We have typically seen that the [U.S.] rise in cases starts in the South," said Assoumou. She noted that some of the highest wastewater levels of SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID) are in Florida and Alabama right now. "This is often followed by increases in other parts of the nation such as the Northeast." How can I protect myself from summer COVID? Make sure your vaccination is current. If you got a COVID shot last winter, you're probably good, Landon said. But if you're 65 or older, immunocompromised, or have a health condition that puts you at high risk – the CDC website maintains a list of qualifying conditions – ask your health care provider if you need a booster now. People with upcoming travel should consider a booster, too. Landon, who has rheumatoid arthritis and receives treatment that affects her immune system, just got a booster because she's going on vacation soon. "I want the best protection since I know that we're seeing the beginning of a summer spike," she said. Remember that masks are still an effective tool. If you're traveling, wear a mask like an N-95, KN-95, or KF-94, and make it as snug as you can tolerate. Don't just wear it on the plane; wear it while lining up to board, too. It is OK to slip it down to sip a drink or eat a snack while in flight. "I would absolutely recommend that everyone wear a mask on an airplane," Landon said. "The last thing you want is even any kind of cold, let alone COVID, when you're on vacation." Pack some COVID tests in your travel bag. If you know you have COVID, you can consider starting antiviral medication right away, which can reduce your risk of hospitalization. Maybe bring a Paxlovid prescription too. If you're older or have a condition that puts you at high risk, ask your doctor to prescribe Paxlovid or another antiviral called molnupiravir to bring with you in case you get sick. Ask sick people to stay home. If you're planning a summer party, Landon suggested adding a note to the bottom of the invite that says, "We have some high-risk people coming. If you're not feeling well, we'll take a pass and meet up with you another time when you're feeling better." Some people feel obligated to attend parties even when they aren't feeling well. "Letting them know that they're off the hook if they're sick and that you really don't want them to come if they're sick is a really important way that you can help protect your own health and help other people to do the right thing," Landon said.

Florida health officials announced on July 11 that four people had died and at least seven others were made sick due to Vibrio vulnificus, a rare but deadly flesh-eating bacteria that seems to be plentiful in Florida's warm climate. The deaths occurred in four counties across the state. Flesh-eating bacteria are rare, with an average of 150 to 200 cases reported each year to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. And as hurricane season continues to bear down on Florida, the number of infections could pick up as seawater is brought to the shores. Here's what you need to know. Where is flesh-eating bacteria Vibrio vulnificus found? The bacteria is found in saltwater, brackish water and inside contaminated raw or undercooked seafood. It also lives naturally in coastal waters year-round. Vibrio vulnificus requires saltwater to live and spread, though it can thrive in brackish (slightly salty) water. For the most part, the bacterial infections usually occur in Gulf Coast states, but in recent years, reports of Vibrio vulnificus have started to be seen further North as climate change fuels warmer oceans. Where cases of flesh-eating bacteria have been found in Florida: In Florida, confirmed cases of Vibrio vulnificus were found in 10 counties, including four in the Panhandle — a frequent vacation destination. Infection can occur when people swallow contaminated water or if it gets into an open wound. People can also become infected due to contaminated raw or undercooked seafood, especially shellfish such as oysters. Why is Vibrio vulnificus called a flesh-eating bacteria? Healthy individuals usually experience only mild symptoms, but it can start eating away at flesh if it gets into an open wound and can cause necrotizing fasciitis, which causes the flesh around the wound to die. Some cases of exposure can turn deadly if necrotizing fasciitis happens or if the bacteria enters the bloodstream. "Vibrio vulnificus bloodstream infections are fatal about 50 percent of the time," according to the Florida Department of Health. According to the CDC, about one in five people die from the infection, sometimes within one to two days of becoming ill. Others could require surgery or even amputation after exposure. What are the symptoms of Vibrio vulnificus? People who are exposed to it could experience diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting and fever, according to the CDC. If an open wound is exposed to Vibrio vulnificus, it can cause discoloration, swelling, skin breakdown and ulcers. How do I avoid exposure to flesh-eating bacteria? Here's what the CDC and Florida Department of Health recommend: Stay out of saltwater and brackish water if you have an open wound or cut. If you get a cut while you are in the water, leave the water immediately. Cover open wounds and cuts with a waterproof bandage if they could come in contact with salt water, brackish water or raw or undercooked seafood. Cook shellfish (oysters, clams, mussels) thoroughly. Avoid cross-contamination of cooked seafood and other foods with raw seafood and juices from raw seafood. Always wash your hands with soap and water after handling raw shellfish. Seek medical attention right away for infected wounds. Toxic algae blooms, found along Ohio beaches If you're vacationing a bit closer to home, be cautious of the beach you choose. According to the Ohio Department of Health, Ohio has 28 beach advisories currently, 24 for high bacteria levels and four for toxic algae blooms. The majority of the beach advisories for bacteria levels are along Lake Erie, but there are several at inland bodies of water. Known risk factors include: having multiple sexual partners engaging in sex without a condom or barrier method and without pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) having partners with an HIV diagnosis injecting drugs HIV testing is also recommended: before a person begins a new sexual relationship if a person learns that they're pregnant if a person has symptoms of another sexually transmitted infection (STI) An HIV infection is now considered a manageable health condition, especially if treatment is sought early. If a person contracts HIV, early detection and treatment can help: improve their frame of mind lower their risk of disease progression prevent the development of stage 3 HIV, or AIDS It can also help reduce their risk of transmitting the virus to other people. A viral load test that directly measures the virus can be used to detect whether someone has recently acquired HIV. What tests are used to monitor HIV? If a person has received an HIV diagnosis, it's important for them to monitor their condition on an ongoing basis. Their healthcare professional can use several tests to do this. The two most common measures for assessing HIV transmission are CD4 count and viral load. CD4 count HIV targets and destroys CD4 cells. These are a type of white blood cell found in the body. Without treatment, the CD4 count will decrease over time as the virus attacks the CD4 cells. If a person's CD4 count decreases to fewer than 200 cells per cubic millimeter of blood, they'll receive a diagnosis of stage 3 HIV, or AIDS. Early and effective treatment can help a person maintain a healthy CD4 count and prevent the development of stage 3 HIV. If treatment is working, the CD4 count should remain level or increase. This count is also a good indicator of overall immune function. If a person's CD4 count drops below particular levels, their risk of developing certain diseases increases substantially. Based on their CD4 count, their doctor may recommend prophylactic antibiotics to help prevent these infections. Viral load Viral load is a measure of the amount of HIV in the blood. A healthcare professional can measure the viral load to monitor the effectiveness of HIV treatment and the status of the disease. When a person's viral load is low or undetectable, they're less likely to develop stage 3 HIV or experience its associated immune dysfunction. A person is also less likely to transmit HIV to others when their viral load is undetectable. People with undetectable viral loads should still continue to use condoms and other barrier methods during sexual activity to prevent transmission to others. Drug resistance A healthcare professional may also order tests to learn if a strain of HIV is resistant to any medications used in treatment. This can help them decide which anti-HIV drug regimen is most appropriate. Other tests A medical professional may also use other tests to monitor someone for common complications of HIV or side effects of treatment. For example, they may order regular tests to: monitor liver function monitor kidney function check for cardiovascular and metabolic changes They may also perform physical exams and tests to check for other illnesses or infections associated with HIV, such as: A CD4 count below 200 cells per cubic millimeters isn't the only sign that HIV has progressed to stage 3 HIV.
