Bengaluru to host prestigious Billie Jean King Cup play-offs
Bengaluru: In a historic first, Karnataka State Lawn Tennis Association (KSLTA) will host Group G ties of the prestigious Billie Jean King Cup Playoffs at the SM Krishna Tennis Stadium in Bengaluru on 14, 15 and 16. This will be the first time ever that the Billie Jean King Cup Playoffs will be held on Indian soil.
The Playoffs will feature 21 nations split into seven groups of three teams each. In a unique format, every group tie will be hosted by a nation, and the venues were formally announced following a draw held on Thursday in London.
India recently qualified for the Playoffs, only for the second time in its history, following a spectacular performance in the Asia/Oceania Group I tie held in Pune. India qualified along with New Zealand for the playoff, following its 2-1 win over Korea.
Both New Zealand and India had four wins each in the six-team competition. The only other time India qualified for the playoffs was in April 2021 when they played in Latvia which saw Jelena Ostapenko lead her team to a 3-1 victory over India.
India are in Group G along with Slovenia and the Netherlands and the five-member Indian team will feature Ankita Raina (rank 292), a top singles player from the country along with Sahaja Yamalapalli (rank 301), Shrivalli Bhamidipaty (rank 313), Vaidehi Chaudhari (rank 405) and Prarthana Thombare, the top-ranked Indian doubles player ranked No.136, the KSLTA informed in a release on Thursday.
In other groups, Canada, Mexico, and Denmark will feature in Group A, and Group B includes Poland, New Zealand, and Romania while Group C features Slovakia, Switzerland, and Argentina. Group D will have Czechia, Colombia, and Croatia, and Group E will have Australia, Portugal, and Brazil. Germany, Belgium, and Turkiye are in Group F.
The KSLTA has been at the forefront of hosting international tennis events and have been a host to Davis Cup ties, ATP World Doubles Championships, WTA Tour Events, ITF Women's $100K, ATP Challengers, ITF World Tennis Tour events, and this would also be a first for KSLTA to host the prestigious Billie Jean King Cup.
In their endeavour to provide invaluable exposure to young players and fans across the country, the leadership at KSLTA bid to host the Billie Jean King Cup play-offs when India qualified last month.

It has always been our endeavour to host top international tennis events in Bengaluru, and we have world-class facilities here which equip us to host an event of this repute,' expressed Priyank Kharge, Senior Vice President of KSLTA and Minister of IT & BT & RDPR, Govt of Karnataka.
Sunil Yajaman, Joint Secretary of KSLTA and Tournament Director of the event said, 'We were absolutely thrilled when India qualified for the playoffs and their performance was outstanding. There is a lot of promise with young tennis players performing exceptionally well and a home playoff tie can be a huge fillip in boosting the growth of the sport particularly at the grassroots and also inspire potential talent.
"We are very delighted to be chosen as one of the host countries for the playoffs and we look forward to welcoming the players and officials to Bengaluru. I believe this would be a rare opportunity for sports-loving citizens of Bengaluru to witness this prestigious event happening for the first time in India. We also feel this would be a great opportunity for the Indian team to perform at its best as all the players are well-adapted to the conditions here. We thank the International Tennis Federation (ITF) for choosing Bengaluru to host this exciting event,' he added.

STAND-IN captain Smriti Mandhana hit a scintillating century (112 off 62 balls) while left-arm spinner N Shree Charani, with figures of 4/12, made a dream debut as India Women crushed England Women by 97 runs in the opening T20I at Nottingham on Saturday. Mandhana's maiden century in T20 internationals guided India to 210/5, India's second-highest total in T20Is, after being asked to bat first. The 28-year-old's 112 was also the highest individual score for an Indian in WT20Is. In reply, the hosts, despite Nat Sciver-Brunt's 42-ball 66, lost wickets at regular intervals and were eventually bowled out for 113 in 14.5 overs. Shree Charani was the destructor-in-chief with the ball as she accounted for four wickets, including the big wicket of Sciver-Brunt. Mandhana, who was deservedly adjudged the Player of the Match, was in her element as she tore apart the England bowling attack. The left-handed batter punished the likes of Em Arlott, Linsey Smith and Sophie Ecclestone and reached the three-figure mark in 51 balls. The Mumbai-born batter's innings included as many as 15 fours and three sixes. Mandhana's splendid innings finally came to an end in the final over. This was incidentally England's heaviest defeat in this format. Smriti Mandhana's elegant maiden ton leads India to 97-run win over England in 1st T20I
Stand-in skipper Smriti Mandhana's graceful maiden T20 International hundred adorned India's smooth 97-run win over England in the opening match here on Saturday (June 29, 2025). The visitors now lead the five-match T20I series 1-0. Mandhana (112, 62 balls) and Harleen Deol (43, 23 balls) added 94 runs for the second wicket as India posted a commanding 210 for five after being invited to bat. Skipper Nat Sciver Brunt (66, 42 balls) waged a lone battle for England, who were limited to 113 all out in 14.5 overs by the on-song Indian bowlers. For India, debutante left-arm spinner Shree Charani (4/12) was the most successful bowler, as there was nothing much left in England's innings after they lost half of the line-up inside the first 10 overs for a sub-100 score. Mandhana, who led the team in the absence of injured regular captain Harmanpreet Kaur, stole the day with an innings that was a full-fledged display of her style, aggression and ability to play shots around the field. She gave the Indian innings some early impetus, making 77 runs with a struggling Shafali Varma (20, 22 balls), whose return to top-flight cricket after a gap of eight months was less than satisfactory. Mandhana was the dominant figure in that alliance off just 8.3 overs. Shafali's dismissal did not deter Mandhana as the left-hander raised a further 94 runs for the second wicket with an equally aggressive Harleen, who was dropped on 26 by Danny Wyatt-Hodge off off-spinner Alice Capsey near mid-wicket. With high-striking shuttles, Tanvi Sharma makes US Open badminton final with imperious march over seventh seed Burhova
Tanvi Sharma has some exceptional variety from the back court and her aggressive intent has been stunning opponents' at the Super 300 US Open in Council Bluffs, Iowa this whole week. The 16-year-old shuttler announced an imminent breakthrough season by reaching the finals by beating Ukrainian Polina Burhova 21-14, 21-16 late on Saturday night. In beating the 21-year-old, Sharma from Hoshiarpur in Punjab and training at the Guwahati National Centre in just over 34 minutes in a show of blistering badminton. Burhova is World No 40, but Sharma, ranked 66, has beaten World Nos 23, 58 and 50 respectively in making the finals. The arena in mid west America was near-empty and fellow semifinalist Ayush Shetty sat in the coaching chair for Sharma. But she was in such impervious form that the Indian barely needed any guidance as she unfurled her wide variety of strokes in beating the older opponent who was often left staggered and pinned down by Sharma's raging strokes. A high serve that she uses to buy some time before she comes charging at the net did the trick till she was faulted on one midway through the second set. She would briefly settle for the short serve, but regain her composure to go back to the tall serve. But Sharma's winning game is her variety from the back. She strokes the shuttle nice and high and early and has the capability to open up the court with ease solely because of the options at her disposal. The punch in her shots carries them cross or down the line with a special fizz and besides the body smashes on Burhova, she has a solid straight zipping hit that travels with speed. Not only is Sharma adept at hitting the lines with precision, she also plays from the wide flanks and conjures angles that scatter opponent defenses. Her drop shots are extremely cerebral, and she uses the deep smashes to the back to set up the curling drop that falls very close to the net. It's how she's beaten world no 23 in Round 1, and how she's made her first big final. Her frame beliefs the strength she can summon in her shots though Burhova would've felt the ping as Sharma went for the body smashes pretty often. But most often there were the follow-ups where she charged the net, didn't bother with dribbles and killed at will. The second set got a little close when Burhova took 5 points straight to level at 16, but Sharma responded by taking 5 of her own thereafter, never letting up on the intensity. Her game is compared to Sindhu's for the attack she can unleash, though her net will get tested by the Top Tenners. But she easily and non-chalantly matches the firepower of opponents and is managing to generate far more power than her frame lets on by sheer timing of striking the shuttle. Winning in straight sets also showed she can dictate the pace and assert her stomping rhythm on the match never quite allowing opponents to snatch her leads. Sharma plays the winner of Beiwen Zhang and Line Christophersen.
