The post Hurricanes' Jesper Fast makes retirement decision after missing 2024-25 appeared first on ClutchPoints.
The Carolina Hurricanes lost to the Florida Panthers in the Eastern Conference Final. Their embarrassing defeat, the third in the East Final in seven years, could prompt some changes. One player the Hurricanes won't be getting back is Jesper Fast, as he has decided to retire. The former Rangers forward did not play while dealing with a neck injury during the 2024-25 season.
'I never took for granted the privilege of playing in the best league in the world,' Fast told the Hurricanes website. 'I am grateful for all of the teammates, coaches, staff, and fans from the Rangers and Hurricanes who made my time in the NHL so special, and for my family for everything they did to help me achieve and live my dream. I'd also like to thank Nässjö HC and HV71, organizations that played a vital role in my development into an NHL player.'

Fast played seven seasons with the Rangers and four with the Hurricanes. scoring 91 goals in 703 regular-season games. He was a depth forward who played a key role in eight playoff berths in his 11 seasons. A neck injury cost him the 2024-25 season and is now forcing him to retire.
Fast did not play in the final year of a two-year contract that paid him $2.4 million per season. He would have been an unrestricted free agent on July 1 if he had not retired. This move does not impact the Hurricanes' plans for free agency, which should lead them to add scoring this summer.
Fast suffered the neck injury in the 2024 season finale against the Blue Jackets. It knocked him out of last year's playoffs, which saw them lose in the second round to the Rangers. After missing this year, the Finnish forward hangs up the skates. From a sixth-round pick to over 700 games played, it was a great career for Fast.

Rangers add veteran right-hander Merrill Kelly in a trade with the Diamondbacks

Associated Press PHOENIX (AP) — The Texas Rangers acquired right-hander Merrill Kelly from the Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday, adding a veteran starter with postseason experience to fortify their rotation at the trade deadline. The D-backs received three minor league pitchers: left-handers Kohl Drake and Mitch Bratt and right-hander David Hagaman. The 36-year-old Kelly has spent all of his seven major league seasons leagues with the Diamondbacks. He was the only Arizona pitcher to beat the Rangers in the 2023 World Series, throwing seven dominant innings in Game 2. Kelly is 9-6 with a 3.22 ERA and 121 strikeouts over 128 2/3 innings this season. The Rangers entered Thursday with a 57-52 record, tied with the Seattle Mariners for the final American League wild-card spot. The D-backs were sellers at the deadline, sending first baseman Josh Naylor and third baseman Eugenio Suarez to the Mariners in separate deals. Outfielder Randal Grichuk was shipped to the Royals. Arizona is 51-58 after entering the season with playoff expectations. General manager Mike Hazen said it was particularly tough to lose Kelly, given his history with the organization. 'There's the collective disappointment in how we've played,' Hazen said. 'We all feel it. The players feel it, I've certainly taken responsibility, shared that with them, how I didn't do a good enough job to keep this team in position to keep going.' ___ AP MLB: recommended Item 1 of 3

The Texas Rangers were active on the phones during the trade deadline and made deals to help their late-season surge up the standings, including a last-minute trade. According to Jeff Passan of ESPN, the Rangers made a deal for Phil Maton from the St. Louis Cardinals, addressing their bullpen. Photo byThe Cardinals capitalized on an inflated market for relievers at the trade deadline by dealing Ryan Helsley to the New York Mets and Steven Matz to the Boston Red Sox, but they reportedly got one last move in by sending Maton to the Rangers before the deadline closed. The Cardinals reportedly received a pair of pitching prospects, left-hander Mason Molina and right-hander Skyler Hales, along with $250,000 in international slot money for Maton. This is a solid return for a two-month rental, and the Cardinals took advantage of the trade deadline. The Rangers addressed their bullpen once more at the trade deadline with Maton, who has proved to be a reliable option in the late innings during his career. Maton brings a 2.35 ERA to the Rangers, and while he didn't close out many games with the Cardinals, he can certainly handle that spot if the Rangers give him the opportunities. The Rangers are giving vibes of their 2023 World Series championship run with how they have gotten hot at the right time and are beginning to climb back into the playoff picture. With two months to go, the American League West has turned into an intense race after the Seattle Mariners, Houston Astros, and the Rangers all loaded up at the trade deadline. Rangers add more rotation help, acquire Phil Maton from Cardinals

A day after trading Ryan Helsley and Steven Matz, the St. Louis Cardinals have completed a hat trick. Right-handed reliever Phil Maton is headed to the Texas Rangers, who had just traded for Arizona Diamondbacks starter Merrill Kelly. In exchange, the Cardinals will receive 22-year-old LHP Mason Molina — whom the Rangers acquired in a January trade with the Brewers — and 23-year-old RHP Skylar Hales, their fourth-round pick in the 2023 draft. Advertisement Maton, 32, was the lone free agent the Cardinals signed in the offseason. He quickly emerged as a vital key in the bullpen. St. Louis used Maton as its primary setup man for Helsley. In 40 appearances, Maton posted a 2.35 ERA and 48 strikeouts. A spin-rate specialist, Maton certainly won't overpower with velo (his average fastball velocity is under 90 miles per hour). But he's carved up opposing hitters all year by missing bats. Maton has registered a 30 percent strikeout rate and a hard-hit rate (28.9 percent) that ranks in the 99th percentile in the league while giving up just one home run this season. Maton represents the ideal deadline rental for contending clubs. He's a durable veteran who has pitched in three postseasons dating back to 2021. He's also owed just $700,000 — making him highly attractive from a cost standpoint. With Helsley traded to the New York Mets and Matz dealt to the Red Sox, the Cardinals are now without their top three relievers. Manager Oli Marmol has options, but none of them have experience. Right-handers Kyle Leahy, Riley O'Brien and Gordon Graceffo look to be the logical fits for leverage innings, along with lefty JoJo Romero. There is no clear-cut candidate for the closer role, but Graceffo seems to be the early favorite. For Texas, Maton is the third and (presumably, unless another trade is announced post-deadline) final move. In addition to Kelly, Texas also added left-handed reliever Danny Coulombe from the Twins. While the offense had been the team's biggest deficiency this year, the bats came to life in July, scoring 138 runs going into Thursday night's game — that's second most in the league, trailing only the Blue Jays, and with Jake Burger expected to return from the IL soon, that production gave the Rangers the freedom to address the bullpen. Advertisement And — despite Kelly's status as a starter — all three moves are expected to be bullpen-boosting moves. The Rangers' rotation already boasts Nathan Eovaldi, Jacob deGrom, Jack Leiter, Kumar Rocker and Patrick Corbin, all of whom have been excellent this year. The addition of Kelly will allow them to move one of those pitchers (likely one of the latter two) to the bullpen to fill a long-relief role that has been shaky this year.
