CPF urge Newcastle residents to stay alert amid rising ATM fraud and scams
On behalf of the Newcastle Community Policing Forum (CPF) and the Newcastle South African Police, Sandile Mdluli (Public Relations Officer for Newcastle CPF) has issued an awareness statement regarding the concerning rise in ATM and other economic crimes reported in Newcastle.
According to Mdluli, recent statistics revealed that Newcastle ranked 26th nationally and 5th provincially in terms of economic crimes.
This alarming position highlights the urgent need for increased vigilance.
To help safeguard the community, Mdluli urged all retail stores to ensure that CCTV and alarm systems are in full working order.
'Properly functioning alarms can deter criminal activity and help alert authorities swiftly in case of emergencies,' he said.
He added: 'We also caution the public to be extremely careful when making purchases through platforms like Facebook Marketplace.'
While these platforms offer convenience, Mdluli stated that they also present opportunities for fraud.
'Always verify sellers, use secure payment methods, and meet in public, well-monitored areas,' he advised.
Mdluli also shared the following key safety tips to help prevent ATM and financial fraud:
Never share your PIN with anyone and always shield the keypad when entering it.
Watch for suspicious individuals or devices near ATMs.
Be cautious of anyone standing too close while you transact.
Contact the police immediately if you suspect fraudulent activity.
'By staying alert and informed, we can all contribute to a safer and more secure Newcastle. Your vigilance can make a difference,' he concluded.

uMkhonto weSizwe (MK Party) has slammed the arrests of its members of parliament, Brian Molefe and Siyabonga Gama, calling it a political witch hunt. 'It is clear that when the MK Party raises legitimate questions about institutional bias and political capture, the response is swift and punitive. This is not justice; it is a witch-hunt,' said Ndhlela. The party called for citizens and civil society organisations to reject what it called 'selective justice' and restore integrity to institutions. The Palm Ridge Specialised Commercial Crime Court granted bail of R50 000 each to the Molefe and the three other former Transnet executives. The court postponed the matter to Monday, 6 October for further investigations. Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) spokesperson Henry Mamothame said the case shows that services were misused and billions of rands were made without being used for the rail modernisation project. He said the arrests show how people in trusted and powerful positions got involved in corruption to benefit themselves instead of helping the country and its infrastructure. City's Sheriff responds to assassination claims by NCC leader Fadiel Adams

Image: File Hours after National Coloured Congress (NCC) leader Fadiel Adams took to social media and hosted a press conference on claims that there was a plot allegedly conspired by mayco member for Safety and Security JP Smith to assassinate him, the City's Sheriff said Smith has already approached his lawyer to open a civil and criminal case against Adams. 'He has approached his lawyer to initiate a civil and criminal case against Fadiel,' said the City on Monday via Smith. The Cape Argus approached the City for comment on the allegations made in the press conference. Adams went live on his Facebook page on Sunday where he claimed the DA ward councillor in Manenberg, Deidree de Vos, had allegedly warned him that there was a conspiracy to kill him. In a press statement released on Friday, Adams said the plot was reported to police weeks ago and he handed all evidence to them. Via his live post, he further claimed he had a recording of De Vos disclosing information to him and on Monday during the press conference held at Parliament, he played it for the media present. Xaba emphasised that matters like water leaks and potholes must be identified urgently through the use of technology and addressed quickly, rather than being left unresolved for weeks or months. Xaba made these remarks while speaking at the Municipal Innovation Awards in Durban yesterday afternoon. The second Municipal Innovation Recognition Awards (MIRA) is an initiative of the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI), the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), and the South African Local Government Association (SALGA). It follows the implementation of the Municipal Innovation Maturity Index in 2021, a tool that assesses the capacity of municipalities to innovate in a bid to improve service delivery. The awards are also a flagship initiative of the Viability and Validation of Innovations for Service Delivery Programme, which supports municipalities in piloting specific technologies or innovations, focusing on aspects like access, availability, acceptability, and adaptability of these solutions in basic service delivery. Award categories included Special Recognition Awards, Top Innovative Municipality, and the Trailblazing Innovations Award for Innovations for Service Delivery. Several municipalities across the country took part in yesterday's ceremony. As we strive to improve performance, this will go a long way in ensuring that we don't wait for communities to report faulty streetlights, burst pipes, and overgrown verges.' SALGA president Bheke Sofile applauded the programme, stating that it is pleasing to see the UKZN, SALGA, and the government working together to address challenges. He expressed concern about the lack of innovation in municipalities and highlighted the importance of collaboration with academics to improve the lives of people in the country. He said innovation was necessary, especially in municipalities with low resources. 'Let us co-create solutions. MIRA represents a sector with the potential and talent to transform itself from within. Let us share what works, document what does not, collaborate and share solutions.'
