LETTER: This donation warms our hearts

St Francis Care Centre manager, Relebohile (Lebo) Ntjona, writes:
On behalf of the board and management of the St Francis Care Centre, I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank Boksburg Advertiser for the donation of winter jerseys, hats and scarves for our little ones at the Rainbow Cottage (children's section).
Our centre is currently providing residential care to 35 children aged between four months and six years.
All these children have been referred to us by the children's court in terms of the Child Care Act due to the fact that they were found to be in circumstances that were not conducive to their well-being.
We provide for their physical, emotional and psycho-social needs and try to create a better future for them by either reuniting them with their biological family or recruiting suitable host parents with the view to place in foster care or eventual adoption.
This donation will surely keep our young ones warm throughout this cold winter season.
I thank you once again for your continued support to our children and St Francis Care Centre at large.

Durban rallies behind matrics with Mandela Day bucket campaign at Pavilion

Former South African President Nelson Mandela laughing while celebrating his birthday with children at the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund in Johannesburg. STUDYING on an empty stomach is hard but this year matriculants preparing for their crucial exams won't go hungry. Instead they'll receive buckets of love this Mandela Day when volunteers will gather to prepare buckets filled with food which will be given to resource-scarce pupils. SA Harvest, a leading food rescue organisation in South Africa, is spearheading the campaign and says that hundreds of care buckets will be packed. 'Our campaign is not just about charity; it's about justice,' says Ozzy Nel, COO of SA Harvest. 'Food rescue is not a handout; it's a powerful tool for systemic change. We aim to meet young people where they are and give them a real chance at success.'

Ladles of Love tackles hunger among homeless people

As recyclers and homeless individuals endured the cold afternoon breeze, with temperatures dropping below 10°C, Ladles of Love kept them in mind. The organisation provided disposable bowls of warm food and beanies to destitute men and women outside two scrapyards along Pretoria Main Road in Alexandra on June 10. Read more: Safe haven: Addressing homelessness in the city of Johannesburg This initiative was part of Ladles of Love's ongoing efforts to ensure access to nutritious food for those who need it most. 'Food security is a human right and not a privilege as it seems to have become,' CEO Daniele Diliberto said. For Diliberto, the initiative was about more than just food; it was about spreading love and kindness to one of the country's most vulnerable communities. A recent Stats SA report titled A Profile of Homeless Persons in South Africa, 2022, published in February this year, highlighted the worsening homelessness crisis, and it identified unemployment and drug and alcohol use as the two leading contributors to homelessness. Also read: From a homeless street boy to gospel star Diliberto rejects the harmful stereotype that homeless individuals are criminals or addicts. 'I don't see homeless people as drunk, addicted people, I see them as human beings like you and me who have a story that brought them to where they are. I am no better than a homeless person just because I don't live on the streets, and I see them as people who have seriously lost their way. Sharing kindness with such a lost soul seems to be the only way to be.' He said his job was to show them that in their 'lonely and traumatic life,' somebody cared about them, and maybe that would keep hope alive in them to get off the street one day. He added that as long as the 'Godly conversation' he had with a homeless man more than a decade ago remained alive in him, he would continue serving those in need. Diliberto said they always welcome donations and volunteers. With Mandela Day coming up, he urges people to be a part of it.
