Ruud van Nistelrooy's Leicester departure confirmed

Van Nistelrooy was appointed at the King Power Stadium in November but was unable to steer the club away from danger, with a return to the Championship confirmed with five games of the season to play. The Dutchman called for clarity on his future following their relegation at the beginning of May, but has had to wait with the club finally confirming his exit on Friday morning. Leicester City Football Club and Ruud van Nistelrooy have mutually agreed that Ruud's contract with the Club as First Team Manager will terminate with immediate effect. — Leicester City (@LCFC) June 27, 2025 The delay is understood to have hinged around the start of a new accounting period, which begins on Monday. With players due back in for pre-season training on June 30, the recruitment process for Van Nistelrooy's replacement is well under way. A statement read: 'Leicester City Football Club and Ruud van Nistelrooy have mutually agreed that Ruud's contract with the club as first team manager will terminate with immediate effect. 'Ruud has overseen a challenging period for the club. From his appointment in November 2024, he approached the role with professionalism, integrity and a clear commitment to our aims, including through the integration of several promising players from the club's academy into our first team environment. 'Ruud moves on with the respect and thanks of everyone at the football club for his dedication and hard work, and with our very best wishes for the future. 'Preparation for the EFL Championship season will continue with the planned start of pre-season on Monday, June 30. 'First team coaching staff will oversee the delivery of those plans until a new manager is appointed. 'There will be no further comment until this process has been completed.' Van Nistelrooy replaced Steve Cooper on November 29 and won four points in his opening two games. But that was as good as it got, as a run of 15 defeats from their next 16 matches sealed their fate. Within that run, they lost nine successive home games without scoring – a new top-flight record. Once relegation was confirmed, the Foxes improved, taking seven points from their final five outings to finish 18th, 13 points from safety. Van Nistelrooy called for talks with the club's hierarchy as soon as relegation was confirmed, but was left hanging for a number of weeks. The Dutchman said: 'I would like to personally thank the Leicester City players, coaches, academy and all the staff I have worked with for their professionalism and dedication during my time at the club and to thank the fans for their support, and take this opportunity to wish the club well for the future.' The Foxes face the prospect of having to deal with a significant points deduction in the Championship, having been charged by the Premier League for breaking Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR). Leicester begin their season with the visit of Sheffield Wednesday on August 10.

Aberdeen 'need one squad for the Premiership and one for Europe'

Aberdeen fans, we asked you how Jimmy Thelin should build on the momentum gathered by that Scottish Cup wins. Here's a taste of what you had to With pacy wingers such a big part of our game, it's a no-brainier we need a top-notch six-yard box finisher. Midfield alternatives to the excellent Graeme Shinnie and Sivert Heltne Nielsen must be on the horizon. A Jamie McGrath-type playmaker By building a strong squad of real quality players and probably a different tactical set up. Overall 4-2-3-1 hasn't worked for us. We can't afford two out-and-out wingers as that always leaves us a man short in midfield. Also, you can't build a goal-scoring partnership when you always play a lone striker. For me, 4-4-2 gives the team more solidity and shape, Topi Keskinen on left of midfield and Nicolas Milanovic on the right with Shayden Morris as the impact They'll need one squad for the Premiership and one for Europe, with a tweaking between the two. We saw last time in Europe, we more or less played the same team on the Thursday and Sunday, leading to players being burned out, losing the momentum we'd shown the second half of the season prior. It will all come down to money - what's left in the pot now? Prioritise what you want, a good run in Europe or finish as high up the league as possible? If we could only try and get Miovski back on loan!Anthony: The second-half of last season was an absolute disaster due to tactical rigidity. There have been many new names but it remains to be seen whether the Dons tactical approach will become more flexible. The first three games will be most instructive. European may be a distraction that earns Building momentum will need a larger and better quality squad to handle both Europe and the league. Both Hearts and the Dons have fallen over in this respect in recent years. Better defenders are essential, as are sharper strikers and a stronger midfield. Thelin has done a great job in his first season, taking the club from nowhere to a major domestic trophy and European group stage football. If there's a problem it won't be the All we seem to do is to sign non-Scottish players. We had a half-hearted attempt to sign [Lyall Cameron], who went to Rangers. Yes, we have signed some good players but not all of them are good. What could be even worse is seeing Bojan Miovski coming back in green and white hoops! If I was Thelin I would try to prize Simon Murray away from Dundee - he could do a good job for us.

North Wales Crusaders' Eaves has lofty league aims

With more than half of the season now completed, Crusaders are the top side in the division and they are well set to maintain their title push during the next few months. Following the 14-4 win in their top-of-the-table clash with Midlands Hurricanes earlier this month, leaders North Wales are three points with eight games left to play. Asked if North Wales could go all the way this season, Eaves told CruCast: 'We'd like to think so. Obviously, internally, we've spoken about it. 'We had a few chats in pre-season. We knew looking round in that changing room and the playing group that we've got pretty much class all over the field. 'Obviously, there's Championship experience, Super League experience and that. So, we know what we can do as a playing group and I think the only people who's going to beat us this season is going to be ourselves. 'Obviously, you've seen that in the Swinton game, we beat ourselves more than anything and I think... if there's going to be a downfall, it's going to be ourselves this year.' Eaves, who started his career off with Super League St Helens, is here for the long haul and he has signed a new two-year deal with the club. This will keep him in North Wales until the end of the 2027 season. A product of the St Helens' academy system, and with Super League appearances to his name, Eaves has also featured on loan at Whitehaven followed by moves to Newcastle and Swinton respectively, prior to linking up with Carl Forster's side this season. Having never dropped below the Championship before this season, Eaves has played a pivotal role in North Wales' rise to the top of League One so far in 2025, leading to a new two-year-deal being signed. Head coach Forster told the club's website: 'With clubs now allowed to speak to played in the final year of their contracts, it's been important for us to begin the conversations with our lads. 'Josh is an outstanding player, he may not always grab the headlines, but both on and off the field he's a vital piece of the puzzle and his ability to move us around the field is second to none. 'I'm delighted that Josh has extended his stay here by a further two years, and I'm confident that together we can achieve some great things.' There are no League One games this weekend and Crusaders are next in action at home to second-placed Workington Town on Sunday, July 6.
