Family remembers Duke Energy contractor killed in Eden crash

Yahoo29-04-2025
EDEN, N.C. (WGHP) — The wounds are still fresh in Piedmont Triad as family and friends continue to mourn the loss of four line workers after a city dump truck crashed into them last week.
All of these men lived in different parts of the Piedmont Triad. They were husbands, brothers and fathers. A nonprofit organization serving the families of linemen across the country is stepping in to offer emotional and financial support.
A memorial along Church Street in Eden marks the spot where tragedy struck Thursday afternoon.
72-year-old Douglas Garland Sides, 32-year-old Madison Carter, 30-year-old Matthew Lockwood 35-year-old William Glenn Evans Jr. were killed.
Evans' stepbrother, Raffilius Wolfhart, said he's still trying to process the sudden loss.
'I'm just kind of speechless. Wasn't expecting him … to leave this planet this early,' Wolfhart said.
Evans and Wolfhart were just 10 years old when the two met after their parents married.
Wolfhart remembers his stepbrother as a devoted family man who loved the outdoors. Evans was a lineman for 10 years. He leaves behind a wife and a young son.
'I'm actually proud of him for having the lifestyle that he had, especially having a kid,' Wolfhart said.
To support Evans' family, Wolfhart has launched a GoFundMe.
He's not alone. The Fallen Linemen Organization, a nonprofit based in Louisiana, is stepping in to help all of the affected families.
Volunteer Coordinator Penny Jo Bilbrey has personally reached out to each one.
Bilbrey's husband is a line worker, so she said connecting with these families is especially personal.
She said the support is needed now and also needed long after these men are laid to rest. They provide them with emotional and financial support.
'This is when the friendship really forms … After the funerals, and I just know that from personal experience, everybody leaves. Unfortunately, life goes on, and that is when the darkest days come and the darkest times. So that's when I personally really try to embrace them as much as they will allow,' Bilbery said.
All donations made to the Fallen Linemen Organization through the nonprofit's website will be divided among the families of the four men killed and the two who were injured.
Please note the word 'Eden' in your donation or a specific person's name, and that's where your donation will go.

Teenage dad-to-be working his first shift at fireworks factory was killed in huge blast alongside his brothers

A teenage father-to-be was among seven killed when a Northern California fireworks warehouse erupted in a terrifying explosion during his first shift there, according to his devastated girlfriend. Jesus Manaces Ramos, 18, was killed alongside two of his brothers, Johnny Ramos and Junior Melendez, when repeated explosions devastated the fireworks warehouse where they were working Tuesday in Yolo County near Esparto, according to ABC10. The teen was on his first shift at the facility, working to prepare for the arrival of his first child, his pregnant girlfriend, Syanna Ruiz, told the outlet. 3 Jesus Manaces Ramos, 18, was working his first day to prepare for his child, his girlfriend, Syanna Ruiz, said. 'He saw it as a new chapter in our life,' she said through tears. 'He was excited. He was a good person, he is a good person.' Ramos was beginning the short-term job at the warehouse with his brothers, Ruiz explained All three brothers were initially listed as among seven people unaccounted for — until fire officials announced they had discovered the bodies of all seven on Sunday. 'They were all three incredible men who had so much coming for them,' Ruiz said of the brothers. 3 Ruiz slammed officials for leaving family members in the dark in the days following the explosion. Ruiz, who quickly showed up at the blast site to demand answers, slammed local authorities and fire officials for leaving her and other family members in the dark for days after the explosion. Fire officials acknowledged the frustration, but blamed dangerous conditions at the blast site for hampering efforts. 3 Ramos was expecting a child with his girlfriend and was looking forward to a 'new chapter.' GoFundMe The blasts at the facility, which occurred just days before the Fourth of July, shook homes and sparked 'numerous spot fires' that forced locals to evacuate, according to local reports. The collective blaze sparked by the explosion, dubbed the Oakdale Fire, spread to over 78 acres before its progress was halted around 7:30 p.m., officials said. Two people were treated for injuries, according to officials. Authorities are still investigating the cause of the blast. With Post wires

Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Authorities in Northern California announced on Saturday that they found the bodies of seven people who went missing last week after a deadly explosion at a fireworks warehouse. Newsweek has reached out to the Yolo County Sheriff's Department for comment via email on Sunday. Why It Matters The update comes the day after Yolo County authorities confirmed that human remains were located at the Oakdale Fire site, following an explosion on Tuesday. On July 1, a fire at an Esparto, California, pyrotechnics facility sparked the 78-acre Oakdale Fire which took several lives and destroyed nearby homes and buildings. The fire led to the postponement of nearby July 4 firework celebrations, including San Jose's. What To Know An explosion at a warehouse operated by Devastating Pyrotechnics set fire to nearby buildings and acres around 6 p.m. Tuesday. The blaze has since been extinguished, but the cause of the explosion has not been confirmed. For days, several people had been reported missing following the explosion, including three brothers. "The Coroner's Office has been in contact with the families of those previously reported missing and will continue to provide them with timely updates as information becomes available," the sheriff's department said in a July 4 update after locating human remains onsite. In a Saturday Facebook post, the sheriff's office announced a "controlled explosive disposal at the Oakdale Fire site," which it said was to be conducted by "authorized personnel" in coordination with "CAL FIRE, the ATF National Response Team, and regional bomb squad partners to safely remove hazardous materials identified at the scene." The post noted that all safety protocols are in place and there is no public threat. "Crews are continuing to mitigate explosive hazards present at the scene," county officials said in a Sunday statement obtained by the Associated Press. Hudson Sheats via AP Marisol Ramos told CBS Sacramento that the coroner's office phoned her with the news that her two sons, Jesus Ramos, 18, and Jhony Ramos, 22, and their stepbrother, Junior Melendez, 28, are among the dead. Melendez's wife, Maria, is pregnant and has a 11-month-old son. An online fundraiser has raised over $20,000 for their family as of Sunday. Another individual, Carlos Rodriguez, was identified as missing since the fire in a GoFundMe started by a family member, and CWC Life, a church in Manteca, wrote in a July 3 Facebook post that the community is "heart broken at the news of the passing of one of our sons Angel Voller, who tragically passed away in the Yolo County fire and explosion." What People Are Saying Devastating Pyrotechnics issued a statement on Wednesday: "Our hearts and thoughts are with those we lost, their families, and everyone impacted in our community. We are grateful for the swift response of law enforcement and emergency personnel. Our focus will remain on those directly impacted by this tragedy, and we will cooperate fully with the proper authorities in their investigation." Jhony Ramos Sr. told CBS News: "I lost two of my kids, my sons. I ask for justice." Jerlena Nolan-Butler, whose niece is married to Carlos Rodriguez, wrote in an online fundraiser: "The coroner contacted Tiffany, informing her that they've located the remains of all 7 missing persons from the Esparto Fireworks Warehouse Explosion. Now, they'll proceed with DNA processing, and we can expect results early next week. Thank you for wrapping Tiffany and the kids in your thoughts and prayers. Your love and support mean the world!" What Happens Next? The coroner's office is still working to identify the remains and plans to use DNA testing.

'I've Been Home All Day:' Woman Gets a Call From the Police. Then They Tell Her Her Yellow Kia Soul Has Been Involved in a Crime

If you're going to steal a car, maybe it shouldn't be the brightest one you can find. Content creator Madison ( @sauceaccount06 ) recently shared the unfortunate fate of her beloved bright yellow Kia Soul, which she's had for six years and affectionately calls Vivian. In the TikTok, Madison explains that she picked up a call with no caller ID and was surprised to find out it was the police calling her to let her know her Kia Soul was just involved in retail theft. 'What was she doing out there?' Madison says, referring to her car. It turned out that her car was stolen. Madison says she had no clue because she'd been home all day. 'They stole a yellow Kia Soul to go commit a crime, which I just think is crazy. Not conspicuous at all, in fact. But I'm devastated because I love that car,' Madison says. The thieves didn't keep her Kia, thankfully. She says they left it behind after driving it recklessly. 'So we'll see if it's in one piece when I get it back,' Madison adds. Her TikTok has 3 million views as of this writing. What Happened to the Kia? In a series of follow-up videos (plus info from her GoFundMe ), Madison reveals that the thief dumped everything that was in her car, which was mainly keepsakes from her childhood, like a shirt she had from kindergarten and her senior prom dress, committed robbery, and then totaled it. In a video Madison posted, you can see that a chunk of the front of the Kia is gone and there are dents and scratches all over it. People noted that Madison was pretty calm given the situation. She seemingly credits this to the fact that this is her fourth car-related incident, so nothing really fazes her. Madison adds that she has full coverage insurance and 'a good sense of humor.' She says she's been hit by a tractor-trailer driving home in the snow, hit as a pedestrian by an older lady, and hit from behind while yielding because the driver 'didn't know you had to stop.' Madison says she developed a neurological disorder from that, but didn't even sue. What she's most devastated by is the fact that she might not be able to find the car again in her signature yellow color. She says that specific shade has been discontinued but didn't specify Kia has reportedly discontinued a popular shade of yellow it used to offer for the Soul. Are Kias Easy to Steal? Why Can't She Figure Out This Feature? Madison says that the thieves broke her window, pulled out the start/stop button, and used a USB to get it started. In 2022, stealing Kias was a trend that went viral on TikTok and YouTube because of how easy it was to hijack a Kia or Hyundai that has push-to-start. Thieves were dubbed 'The Kia Boys.' This had been an ongoing issue that affected Kia models from 2011 to 2021 and Hyundai models from 2015 to 2021, a local news station reported. The issue was that many of these models didn't come with engine immobilizers. This makes it possible to plug the cord into a certain spot and start the powerplant without needing the key or fob. Both manufacturers have since updated the cars to have engine immobilizers. 'Made For a Life of Crime' People were largely sympathetic to Madison over her beloved yellow Kia Soul. Some were surprised that the thieves chose such a conspicuous shade of car to go on a crime spree. 'They picked a highlighter for a getaway vehicle?' one wrote. Perhaps inspired by Madison's lighthearted attitude, some brought brevity to the comments. 'Vivian was made for a life of crime,' a person joked. Another wrote, 'For just .39 cents a day you can help this girl get a new car.' To one outlier, the stolen Kia Soul wasn't the craziest thing Madison shared. 'Answering a call with no caller id is the wildest part of this story,' a third said. Motor1 reached out to Madison for comment via TikTok direct message and comment.
