SME Sabah, IEM Sabah strengthen ties to boost innovation and technical collaboration

KOTA KINABALU (May 28): The Small and Medium Enterprises Association of Sabah (SME Sabah) paid a courtesy visit to the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) Sabah Branch at its office in Damai Point, Kota Kinabalu, to foster closer collaboration between the SME and engineering communities in Sabah.
The meeting, held at 10:30am on Wednesday, featured a formal introduction to SME Sabah, a briefing on the upcoming SME Sabah Conference, and an engaging discussion on potential areas for collaboration, especially in innovation, technical capacity building and industry engagement.
Notably, IEM Sabah has officially acknowledged and endorsed the conference, further underlining its commitment to cross-sector partnership and professional development.
In support of this initiative, IEM Sabah has approved 6.5 CPD (Continuing Professional Development) points for engineers who attend the upcoming conference, offering a valuable opportunity for professional enrichment.
Present at the meeting from IEM Sabah were Ir. Ts. Tan Kok Jyh, JP – Vice Chairman I; Ir. Paul Yap Kok Wai – Vice Chairman II; Ir. Wong Chen Jack – Honorary Treasurer; Ir. Andrew Amaladoss – Co-opted Member; Ag. Khairul Akmal bin Kamaludin – IPC Representative, YES From ACEM Sabah: Ir. Benny Song Perng Yeu – Chairman and Ir. Wah Kheng How – Deputy Chairman.
SME Sabah: Dr Deledda Tan – President; Ir. Chia Khuin Fung – Vice President; Fenny Yapp – Project Secretary; Caleb Tseu – Working Committee Member.
The session concluded on a positive note, with both parties expressing optimism for long-term engagement to boost the development of local industries through strategic collaboration between SMEs and the engineering sector.
The SME Sabah Conference, a flagship event of SME Sabah, is expected to bring together professionals, entrepreneurs, and policymakers to discuss growth strategies, innovation, and sustainability.

It was jointly organised by JKR Sabah, IEM Sabah, and the Pavement Knowledge Sharing Community Sabah (PKSC), with support from technology partner Wirtgen Malaysia. The full-day event featured intensive technical discussions on the latest methods in pavement construction and maintenance. The opening speech was delivered by Ir. Wong CT of JKR Sabah, who is the Head of the Technical and Quality Control Division for the Pan Borneo Highway. Keynote presentations were delivered by Ir. Pok SL, Managing Director of Wirtgen Malaysia, who shared real-world insights on topics such as Cold In-Place Pavement Recycling (CIPR), Thin Gap Graded Overlay Asphalt (VTO), best practices in road base construction, and innovative approaches to address asphalt segregation. Shawn Lim, Head of Parts at Wirtgen Malaysia, introduced participants to advanced Telematics Technologies designed for real-time fleet monitoring and efficient road maintenance operations. The seminar concluded with a closing address by Ir. Ts. Tan KJ, JP, representing IEM Sabah Branch. He commended the collaborative efforts between government agencies, industry players, and professional bodies in raising engineering standards in Sabah. 'The seminar exemplifies how collaboration and knowledge sharing can transform our road engineering practices. Through innovation, technology, and continuous learning, we can deliver sustainable and high-quality infrastructure to the people of Sabah,' said Ir. Tan during his speech. Certificates of appreciation were presented to the speakers, and CPD hours were awarded to participants by IEM Sabah. Kota Kinabalu: The Institute of Geology Malaysia (IGM) Sabah Chapter and the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) Sabah have forged closer ties to tackle geological and engineering challenges. This was achieved during a courtesy visit by IGM Sabah to IEM Sabah branch office in Damai Point Commercial Centre here on Tuesday, marking a significant step towards strengthening collaboration between two of Malaysia's key professional bodies in engineering and geology. The IGM Sabah Chapter delegation was led by its Chairman, Prof. Ts. Gr. Dr Rodeano bin Roslee, alongside Vice Chairman Dr. A. Khairut Termizi, Lee Kiun You, Rollix, and Khairee Saad, all representing the Industry and Professionalism section. Both institutions explored opportunities for collaboration, including organizing joint technical seminars and training programs, sharing knowledge on geological hazards and mitigation, engaging in public awareness campaigns on geology and engineering safety, and supporting the professional development of young engineers and geoscientists. Datuk Ir. Ts. Mohd Yaakob expressed his appreciation for the visit and reaffirmed IEM Sabah's commitment to multidisciplinary cooperation for the advancement of the professions and the well-being of the community. 'Sabah, with its complex geological landscape, stands to benefit greatly from closer ties between geologists and engineers,' he said. Kota Kinabalu: Over 400 participants from across Malaysia, including SME owners, industry leaders, and professionals, attended the SME Sabah 2025 Conference, here, on Friday. The full-day event, themed 'Mastering Sustainability & Empowering the Change', was officiated by State Industrial Development and Entrepreneurship Minister Datuk Phoong Jin Zhe. SME Sabah President Dr Deledda Tan said the conference aimed to equip businesses with practical strategies while strengthening their role in the State's economic growth. 'We want participants to walk away recharged, equipped with actionable insights and meaningful connections,' she said. Dr Deledda also announced that SME Sabah is now a certified HRD Corporation training provider, giving members access to structured development programmes. The event is recognised by the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM), with attendees eligible for 6.5 Continuing Professional Development (CPD) hours.
