
Monsoon wrecks Himachal: 92 lives claimed; Rs 751.78 crore worth infrastructure damaged

Of the total deaths, 56 were caused by rain-related incidents such as cloudbursts, landslides, flash floods, electrocution, and drowning. The remaining 36 fatalities were linked to road accidents, many of them in Kullu, Chamba, and Solan districts, which have emerged as the worst-hit in terms of traffic-related casualties.
Mandi district has borne the brunt of the disaster. As per the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), 15 people have died, 27 are missing, and five have been injured there in just 11 days.
The 16 MW Patikari hydroelectric project in the region has also sustained significant damage.
The rainfall has left a trail of destruction in its wake: 844 homes and 631 cowsheds damaged, along with 164 shops, 31 vehicles, and 14 bridges across the state. Mandi district alone reported the loss of over 854 livestock.
Road connectivity remains severely hit, with 247 roads, including crucial stretches of NH-003 (Mandi-Dharampur via Kotli) and NH-21 (Mandi-Kullu), still blocked.

Power and water supply have also taken a hit, with 463 transformers and 781 water schemes disrupted.
Relief operations are in full swing. So far, 534 people have been shifted to 16 relief camps in Mandi, while 5,228 tarpaulins and 3,093 ration kits have been distributed to affected families. The Indian Air Force has airlifted 290 people, including 92 schoolchildren and two pregnant women, from cut-off areas.
Rescue efforts continue in high-risk zones like Thunag, Gohar, and Karsog with the help of the NDRF, SDRF, Indian Army, ITBP, and Home Guards.
Drone surveillance and airdropped medical aid are ongoing in remote villages such as Lambathach and Pakhrair.
The total loss from the monsoon havoc is pegged at Rs 751.78 crore. The toll includes the complete destruction of 368 homes, 295 shops, 85 huts and labour shelters, as well as damage to large swathes of farmland.
The state disaster management authority (SDMA) has urged people to remain cautious, especially in landslide-prone and low-lying areas, as more rainfall is expected in the coming days.

The Met office has issued an 'orange' alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall in three districts of Himachal Pradesh on Monday and Tuesday, reported the PTI. According to the weather department, heavy to very heavy showers are likely to occur at isolated locations in Kangra, Mandi, and Sirmaur on Monday, and in Shimla, Solan, and Sirmaur on Tuesday. A 'yellow' warning for heavy rain has also been issued for three to seven out of the state's twelve districts, effective until Friday. As of Monday morning, 208 roads — 157 of them in the disaster-stricken Mandi district — have been closed to vehicular traffic due to the ongoing rainfall. Additionally, 745 water supply schemes and 139 electricity distribution transformers have been impacted, according to the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC). Himachal Pradesh has already incurred losses exceeding Rs 770 crore during this year's monsoon season. Between the onset of the monsoon on 20 June and 13 July, a total of 98 people have lost their lives — 57 due to rain-related incidents and 41 in road accidents. Another 178 individuals have sustained injuries, while 34 are reported missing. The state has so far experienced 31 flash floods, 22 cloudbursts, and 18 landslides. Meanwhile, light to moderate rainfall has been recorded in various parts of the state. Rajgarh in Sirmaur district received 72 mm of rainfall since Sunday evening, followed by Khadrala (42.4 mm), Pachhad (38 mm), Mandi (26.4 mm), Bhuntar (22 mm), Shilaroo (14.2 mm), Seobagh (12.2 mm), Shimla (11.5 mm), and Rohru (10 mm). Monsoon Havoc in Himachal: 98 dead, 57 rain-related, 41 in road accident
Shimla (Himachal Pradesh) [India], July 14 (ANI): Himachal Pradesh continues to face a grim monsoon season, with the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) confirming a total of 98 fatalities between June 20 and July 13, 2025, across the state. Of these, 57 deaths have been caused by rain-related disasters like landslides, flash floods, and cloudbursts, while 41 people have lost their lives in road accidents, as per the latest situation report issued at 10:00 AM on Monday. In addition to the human toll, the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) reported widespread damage to essential public utilities, 208 roads remain blocked, including one national highway (NH-21 from Mandi to Kullu). And 139 Distribution Transformers (DTRs) have been disrupted and 745 water supply schemes are currently affected due to heavy rains and related damage. As per the Cumulative Loss Report released by the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA), among the rain-related fatalities, 15 people died due to cloudbursts, 9 by drowning, 8 in flash floods, 4 due to snake bites, 1 each from a landslide and fire, and 19 others due to electrocution, falls, or other reasons. No deaths were reported due to lightning. The worst-affected district is Mandi, which alone accounts for 21 of these rain-related deaths, along with 27 missing persons and extensive damage to property. Road accident fatalities were highest in Kullu, which reported 7 deaths, followed by Chamba with 6, and Shimla and Solan with 4 each. Other districts such as Mandi, Kangra, Bilaspur, Kinnaur, and Una also reported casualties. The report further states that 178 people have been injured during this period, while 34 individuals remain missing. The heavy rains and related disasters have also taken a toll on livestock, with 22,454 animal deaths recorded. Property damage includes 668 houses (fully and partially), 788 cowsheds, and 224 shops and factories. The total estimated monetary loss stands at Rs 770 crore (Rs 77,096.37 lakh). The SDMA and district administrations are actively engaged in relief and clearance operations, but continued rainfall poses challenges to accessibility and safety. Authorities have urged residents and travelers to remain alert, avoid unnecessary travel to high-risk areas, and follow official advisories. 'The monsoon continues to present a major challenge to the state's disaster management machinery. Our teams are working 24/7 to restore normalcy and minimize further loss,' said a senior SDMA official. With over 31 flash floods, 22 cloudbursts, and 18 landslides reported in just 24 days, officials have urged the public to avoid vulnerable zones, stay updated with weather advisories, and contact SEOC helpline 1070 for emergencies.
