My Current Fashion Inspiration? A Haunted Doll
I've never really understood the urge some adults have to dress like their childhood dolls. Frilly Peter Pan collars and lace trim just don't do it for me; and even when I was well within the age bracket to dress like I was heading to my First Communion, I didn't want to. Recently, though, I've noticed a shift. Over the past couple of months, I've been itching to incorporate into my wardrobe the exact details that once repelled me. But instead of dressing like a pristinely kept Madame Alexander, I'm taking inspiration from haunted-looking thrift store dolls. You know the ones: eyes glassy and vaguely menacing, their dresses yellowed and tattered, worn down by time. The imperfect, weathered fashions sit in opposition to their purpose as collectibles, meant to be preserved. Chloé spring 2025 Photo: Carlo Scarpato / I'm not the only one bewitched by their freaky charm: haunted doll fashions have been ever-present in recent seasons. (Lest we forget the bloomer shorts craze that began a couple of years ago.) Chemena Kamali's Chloé sent tiers of lace and billowing pantaloons down the runway for spring 2025, and Seàn McGirr's McQueen offered operatic collars and shredded hems that same season. Here in New York, Zoe Gustavia Anna Whelan's deconstructed styles remind me of a discarded doll left to the elements, while Colleen Allen's Victorian silhouettes mimic old underpinnings. The look has even hit the mass market: Free People sells a pair of lace-trimmed bloomer pants that serve as a budget-friendly alternative to luxury offerings. McQueen fall 2025 Photo: Filippo Fior / Chloé spring 2025 Photo: Carlo Scarpato / Zoe Gustavia Anna Whelan fall 2025 Photo: Christian Defonte / Courtesy of Zoe Gustavia Anna Whalen Colleen Allen spring 2025 Courtesy of Colleen Allen Perhaps there is no better example of someone who dresses like a haunted doll than Miss Havisham from Great Expectations. Jilted at the altar, Charles Dickens imagines her spending the rest of her life wearing her wedding dress to shreds, her banquet left untouched on the table, covered in cobwebs. Yet, I can't help but find that kind of fabulous. Helena Bonham Carter's interpretation of the role for the 2012 film saw Miss Havisham swallowed up by a voluminous wedding gown, its skirt of swirling organza, and its bell sleeves bedraggled. Clothes hold so much emotional power and reflect how we want to be seen in the world. Dressing in clothes that are feminine, yet weathered, feels like wearing your heart on your sleeve. It's a nice reminder that not everything needs to be polished and perfect all of the time to still be beautiful and worth wearing. So, while I was never one to don matching outfits with my American Girl Doll, now as an adult, I'll be looking to hanted dolls for style inspiration.

This Is the Only Concealer That Covers My Blemishes Without Causing New Ones
Anyone with acne-prone or sensitive skin knows the struggle: you find a concealer that covers just right, only to discover it's making your skin worse. Whether it's new breakouts, clogged pores, or overall irritation, traditional full-coverage formulas can be a double-edged sword. However, thanks to non-comedogenic concealers, that vicious breakout cycle can finally come to an end—or at least a long pause. Designed to provide coverage without suffocating your skin, these formulas are free of pore-clogging ingredients and often include skin-soothing benefits. 'For anyone prone to breakouts or with sensitive skin, that's huge,' says celebrity makeup artist Lisa Aharon. Even better, they allow your skin to breathe while still providing coverage where you need it. Investing in products with those skin-loving ingredients is 'especially important when it comes to complexion products like concealer, since it sits right on the areas you might be trying to cover, such as blemishes or redness.' The best part? Non-comedogenic concealers come in all different shapes and sizes. No-makeup-makeup lovers fawn over sheer, serum-like tints, while full glam girls can't get enough of the high-coverage concealers packed with nourishing ingredients. No matter your makeup style, there's an anti-clogging formula calling your name. Fortunately, the non-comedogenic market is rapidly growing. Unfortunately, it's become quite hard to choose which one is right for you. So, I tested the latest launches and cult-favorites, tapping renowned artists like Aharon, and read through countless customer reviews. Ahead, shop the 10 best non-comedogenic concealers for smooth, skin-loving coverage every time. For years, editors, experts, and influencers have been raving about the Hourglass Vanish Airbrush Concealer for its high-coverage finish, blurring power, and long-wearing, waterproof formula. But did you know it's non-comedogenic? No wonder it feels so lightweight! Coverage: Full Shades: 32 Nordstrom rating: 4.5/5 An ELLE editor says: 'I have been hearing about this concealer for decades, but for some reason it took me until this year to finally join the bandwagon and give it a go. As an acne-prone, sensitive-skin, full-coverage-loving girl, I can confidently call this my dream concealer. It not only covers but blurs my blemishes and dark circles, all without clogging a single pore.'—Emma Aerin Becker, associate beauty e-commerce writer A favorite of Aharon's, the Tower 28 Swipe All-Over Hydrating Serum Concealer is perfect for everyday wear. Not only does it blend like magic, it has the texture and ingredients of a hydrating serum but delivers the look of a medium-coverage concealer. 'It's formulated for sensitive skin and free from fragrance and alcohol, in addition to being non-comedogenic,' Aharon says. Coverage: Light-to-medium Shades: 20 Sephora rating: 4.3/5A Sephora reviewer says: 'I absolutely love this concealer! It goes on so smoothly! This concealer is also great for my sensitive skin. Highly recommend this product!' This concealer is long-wearing, blurring, and brightening with medium-buildable coverage. Plus, it's packed with niacinamide, fermented arnica, and hyaluronic acid to promote a hydrated, healthy-looking complexion. Quite the multitasker, it even depuffs your under-eyes after two weeks of daily use. Coverage: Medium Shades: 31 Sephora rating: 4/5A Sephora reviewer says: 'Amazing concealer that goes on the skin like butter! Feels very light, melts into the skin, and doesn't exaggerate any dry spots (which is a big issue for my skin). This is my favorite product I put on my face, and I have yet to find another concealer to rival this one!!' The Lancôme Teint Idôle Ultra Wear All Over Concealer is another go-to for Aharon. She loves the 'natural, polished finish that still feels breathable and doesn't settle into lines.' Infused with skin-loving ingredients, it also provides up to 24 hours of hydration. Nordstrom rating: 4.6/5 A Nordstrom reviewer says: 'This concealer has been a game changer. I am 56 years old and starting to get some under eye fine lines—dare I say wrinkles—and this is the first concealer I've used that doesn't crease or wear off. I love it! It is a must have!' The Nars Soft Matte Concealer is 'velvety, long-wearing, and gives great spot coverage without heaviness,' says Aharon. It's an industry favorite for spot concealing in a pinch without making breakouts and redness worse, thanks to peptides, hyaluronic acid, and a mix of vitamins A, C, and E. Shades: 30Nordstrom rating: 4.6/5 An ELLE editor says: 'When I have a breakout I need to cover, I always lean on my Nars Soft Matte Concealer. I simply dip a small brush into the pot (a little goes a long way) and pat it onto each blemish. They practically disappear in seconds. It's super long-wearing, lightweight, and I love knowing it isn't making my skin worse.'—Emma Aerin Becker For a waterproof, full-coverage formula, the Dior Backstage Concealer is surprisingly thin and lightweight. The tiny brush applicator makes precise application a breeze, while micro-pigments visibly blur imperfections and brighten complexion. Shades: 22 Sephora rating: 4.3/5 A Sephora reviewer says: 'So good. Coverage is amazing and blendable. Stays on all day! Highly recommend. If you are middle-aged or have wrinkles, this is an approved makeup item!' Not everyone with acne-prone skin wants a high-coverage formula. Enter the Refy Concealer—it's hydrating, brightening, and boasts a light, serum-like texture. Coverage: Light Shades: 24 Sephora rating: 4.4/5A Sephora reviewer says: 'It is definitely not a full coverage concealer and that's exactly what I was looking for. This lightweight concealer, brightens and blurs and doesn't get patchy or cakey' Enriched with vitamin C and mastic—an ingredient known to have anti-bacterial properties—the Ilia True Skin Serum Concealer helps firm, nourish, and refine your skin while you wear it. The lightweight formula provides medium coverage but feels like skin care. Nordstrom rating: 4.5/5A Nordstrom reviewer says: 'I'm telling you this is a game changer. I have tried every concealer, and this is so radiant with a medium coverage and very hydrating. I have three different shades. One to cover up blemishes, one lighter color for under eyes, and a dark for contour. It is AMAZING.' Finding a non-comedogenic concealer doesn't have to break the bank. The e.l.f. Hydrating Camo Concealer is long-wearing, crease-proof, and still lightweight—all for the price of a latte. Shades: 25 Ulta rating: 4.3/5 An Ulta reviewer says: 'My favorite concealer because it's so cheap compared to others, and it lasts all day for me. I have oily skin and I use this concealer with a moisturizer, primer, and setting powder, and it lasts perfectly all day. Definitely buildable and easy to use. Love and recommend!' Aharon calls this concealer the definition of 'skin care-meets-makeup.' It's hydrating, brightening, and 'so effortless under the eyes.' The serum-like formula is infused with a variety of skin care ingredients, such as caffeine, hyaluronic acid, peptides, and arnica. Shades: 38 Sephora rating: 3.9/5 A Sephora reviewer says: 'Kosas' concealer is the only concealer that doesn't crease and leaves my skin hydrated all day. It's super hydrating but not to the point where it's oily. Definitely one of my makeup holy grails!' Non-comedogenic products all come down to the formula. 'A non-comedogenic concealer avoids certain oils and ingredients that are known to trigger congestion or clog pores,' says Aharon. It's important to look for oil-free, fragrance-free, and alcohol-free formulas. You can also check for soothing actives like hyaluronic acid or centella. 'Also test the feel,' Aharon adds. 'If it's too thick or heavy, even a non-comedogenic product can feel pore-suffocating.' Absolutely! You don't have to sacrifice coverage for skin care. Many modern formulas deliver medium to high coverage while staying breathable and gentle. Lisa Aharon is a celebrity makeup artist based in New York. I Finally Found a Scalp Sunscreen That Doesn't Give Me Greasy Hair
You wouldn't skip SPF on your face, so why neglect your scalp? The scalp is one of the most sun-exposed (and most forgotten) areas of your body. If you've ever ended a beach day with a bright red part—or worse, a flake-filled scalp that feels like it's been set on fire—you already know how easy it is to miss this area. Often hidden under hair but still highly vulnerable to UV damage, the scalp deserves just as much sun protection as our hands, faces, and bodies. Enter scalp sunscreen: a category that's grown far beyond greasy sprays and sticky lotions. Board-certified dermatologist Dr. Robyn Gmyrek emphasizes the importance of shielding your scalp all summer long. 'Unless you are wearing a hat, it's one of the most sun-exposed areas, especially if you have thinning hair. UV radiation can lead to sunburn, DNA damage, and skin cancers, which can be more aggressive when they occur on the scalp.' Fortunately, today's top formulas are lightweight, non-greasy, and designed to work with every hair type and texture. From clear mists that disappear on contact to loose powders that double as dry shampoos, these products protect your part without disrupting your 'do—or leaving behind a sticky residue. Whether you're sporting a shaggy bob, slicked-back bun, box braids, or beachy waves, applying sunscreen to your scalp is essential to preventing painful burns, itchy dandruff, and serious sun damage. To find the formulas that rival your favorite sun hats and head scarves, we've tested dozens of products, tapped dermatologists, and scanned customer reviews. Below, shop the best scalp sunscreens on the market. Although technically designed to set makeup, the Supergoop! 100% Mineral (Re)setting Powder works just as well (if not better) for scalp protection. 'It's easy to apply to the part or along the scalp because it is a powder formulation,' says Dr. Gmyrek. Plus, it has SPF 35 and absorbs oil, so your scalp stays protected and never greasy. Even better, it comes in four translucent shades. Sun protection: SPF 35 Type: Powder Sephora rating: 3.9/5An ELLE editor says: 'I love dry shampoo just as much as I love SPF. This product is amazing at keeping my hair feeling clean and fresh without any white cast, all while protecting my scalp from UV damage. The compact brush packaging also makes on-the-go application a breeze.'—Emma Aerin Becker, associate beauty e-commerce writer This lightweight, non-greasy scalp spray is packed with SPF 30, along with cica and monoi oil to help maintain healthy-looking hair. It's designed to both protect your scalp from burning and keep your hair color from fading. Sun protection: SPF 30 Type: Mist Nordstrom rating: 4.3/5 Our expert says: 'The Coola Scalp & Hair Mist is a lightweight mist that is never greasy and has added antioxidants. It's ideal because it is easy to apply over larger areas of the scalp.'—Dr. Gmyrek If you're looking for ultra-high SPF in just a quick swipe, Shiseido has you covered with its Clear Sunscreen Stick. The completely clear formula and slim design make this powerful sunscreen ideal for gliding straight down your part. Sun protection: 50+ Type: StickNordstrom rating: 4.7/5 An ELLE editor says: 'If I know I'm spending hours under the sun, I'm triple-checking I have the Shiseido Clear Sunscreen Stick in my bag. It couldn't be easier to apply down the part of my high ponytail—just swipe and go. With SPF 50+ and 80 minutes of water resistance, I never have to worry.'—Emma Aerin Becker The Sun Bum Scalp & Hair Mist dries down so fast, you won't even remember spraying it. Lightweight and non-greasy, this mist is infused with vitamin E, aloe, and antioxidants to nourish the scalp while protecting it from sun damage. Type: MistAmazon rating: 4.5/5 An Amazon reviewer says: 'I love this sunscreen spray! It goes on easily, protects my scalp from the sun, smells great, and doesn't make my hair oily.' This ultra-fine powder contains SPF 50 and boasts a sheer, matte finish—perfect for brushing onto the scalp. The 100 percent mineral sunscreen also doubles as a silky-smooth translucent powder for on-the-go makeup touch-ups. Sun protection: SPF 50 Dermstore rating: 4/5 A Dermstore reviewer says: 'Love this powder! I love how it has SPF 50. It's great for touch-ups in the summer!' Infused with hyaluronic acid and antioxidants, the Colorescience Sunforgettable Total Protection Brush-On Shield ensures your scalp is not only protected, but nourished with every application. It comes in four shades, is water- and sweat-resistant, and is safe for sensitive skin. Amazon rating: 4.2/5 An Amazon reviewer says: 'This powder sunscreen is very convenient for reapplying sun protection throughout the day, especially if you wear makeup. I like that it's lightweight and doesn't feel heavy on the skin. It's great for sensitive skin, and the SPF 50 provides solid coverage against the sun's rays. Plus, the brush design makes it easy to use anytime.' The only thing more important than applying SPF is being able to reapply it easily. The Hawaiian Tropic Mineral Translucent Sunscreen Powder is small enough to toss in your purse, so you're always prepared to protect your scalp. Type: PowderAmazon rating: 4.1/5 An Amazon reviewer says: 'This powder sunscreen is a game-changer for quick SPF reapplication. The brush is super soft and the powder goes on sheer—no white cast or buildup. I also use it on my scalp to protect my part from getting sunburned, and it doesn't make my hair look oily. So easy to toss in my bag for daily sun protection!' According to Dr. Gmyrek, how you apply sunscreen to your scalp depends on your hair type. For bald or closely-shaved heads, "use a lotion, stick, or spray sunscreen as you would on your face—apply generously and reapply every 2 hours.' If you're targeting part lines or thinning hair, you can press or [apply] a powder, lotion, mist, or cream directly onto the part and gently blend it in. Finally, when it comes to hairlines and temples, 'a stick sunscreen gives good control and is easy to apply without mess.' Dr. Robyn Gmyrek is a board-certified dermatologist based in New York City.
