
EAD launches first project in Gulf to survey, evaluate, restore traditional oyster habitats
The project, which is the first of its kind in the Arabian Gulf region, aims to reduce the effects of climate change and improve seawater quality by expanding the area of oyster habitats that help to absorb and store carbon dioxide from seawater during shell formation.
The project also seeks to enhance the marine environment and biodiversity, as well as preserve the cultural heritage of Abu Dhabi.
EAD's database will be enhanced via a comprehensive survey and assessment of traditional oyster beds to create a modern interactive digital map. The project also aims to increase environmental awareness about the importance of protecting and restoring marine habitats by involving school students under the Sustainable Schools Initiative (SSI) to assemble the artificial reefs.
The new initiative represents a step toward strengthening the emirate's leadership related to studies and research regarding the restoration of oyster habitats and associated ecosystems.
In the project's first phase, which focused on collecting data on traditional pearl diving sites, EAD was able to identify 335 diving sites using multiple scientific sources, including maps, historical books, and the agency's database, as well as consultations with traditional fishermen in the emirate.
After completing the survey of the identified sites and assessing the status of their oysters, the EAD will begin formulating a plan to restore the degraded sites and design rigs using oyster shells produced at the Abu Dhabi Pearl Centre in the Mirfa area, while developing an updated digital map of the current oyster habitats in the emirate.
In the second phase of the project, EAD completed evaluation of 150 traditional beds out of 335, discovered 200 new oyster habitats and developed a plan to restore affected beds. Among the assessed sites, the agency selected Umm Al Salsal, a degraded traditional diving site near the eastern side of Marawah Island, for oyster restoration efforts.
As part of the oyster restoration plan, EAD designed, developed, and installed 64 differently shaped structures at Umm Al Salsal. Around 30 students from Al Marfa schools participating in the SSI helped assemble the structures made from sustainable materials, including oyster shells from the Abu Dhabi Pearl Centre. A monitoring plan is currently underway to assess the progress and success of the selected site for restoration.
Ahmed Al Hashemi, Executive Director of the Terrestrial and Marine Biodiversity Sector at EAD, said, 'Before the advent of cultured pearls and the discovery of oil, the Arabian Gulf was a major centre for the pearl trade, famous for producing the finest, world-renowned pearls. Diving was not only a profession or a means of livelihood, but also an integrated social system that had a profound impact on the region's culture and traditions. However, this industry required the extraction of thousands of oysters to obtain a few precious gems. Today, the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi seeks to revive this rich cultural heritage in a modern and sustainable way by supporting and adopting pearl farming practices.
'We are keen to expand aquaculture activities in the emirate of Abu Dhabi and, through the pearl oyster restoration project, we seek to benefit from its great benefits, such as enhancing biodiversity, supporting various marine species, and improving the health of the ecosystem in general. In addition, pearl oysters have historical and cultural significance to Abu Dhabi and their restoration enhances this connection. Pearl oysters also contribute to water purification and help maintain the balance of marine ecosystems, which directly impacts environmental sustainability,' he added.
The EAD's future plans for the Pearl Oyster Restoration Project include a wide range of environmental, and community initiatives and will see a gradual expansion of restoration sites as initial efforts demonstrate success – identifying additional suitable sites and increasing the number of oysters being cultured and rehabilitated.
In the long term, these efforts may stimulate investment in scientific research to develop more efficient and effective restoration techniques, which may include genetic studies of pearl oysters, advanced breeding programmes, and innovative aquaculture techniques.

SREENIVASA REDDY (ABU DHABI)An Abu Dhabi-based astronomy centre has tracked an extraordinary comet hurtling through our solar system at an astonishing speed of 221,000 kilometres per hour—marking a rare interstellar visitor from Astronomical Observatory, located in the Abu Dhabi desert, captured images of the comet on the evening of July 3, according to Eng. Mohammad Shawkat Odeh, Director of the International Astronomy Center. Speaking to Aletihad, he confirmed that this makes the observatory the first Arab facility to conduct scientific observations of this celestial comet was initially discovered by NASA on July 1, using the ATLAS survey system and its telescope in Chile. Originally designated 'A11pl3Z,' it was later named 'C/2025 N1 (ATLAS)' and has now been formally classified as '3I/ATLAS'. The prefix '3I' signifies its distinction as only the third known interstellar object — meaning it originated outside our solar system. The first, 'Oumuamua', was detected in 2017, followed by 2I/Borisov in Odeh noted that the comet, currently located 670 million kilometres from the Sun, is travelling at a velocity too great to be gravitationally bound to our solar system. 'Experts were able to determine that it originated outside the solar system due to its extreme speed and its open trajectory, as it does not orbit the Sun,' he the comet was technically demanding due to its faint brightness, with a current visual magnitude of 17.5. It is only visible through large telescopes. Despite this, the observatory team succeeded in capturing 45 images during a 45-minute observation window. 'The team observed the comet moving among the stars at high speed,' Eng. Odeh said, adding that the object is in the yellow box in the captured image displayed from the Abu Dhabi observatory has been submitted to the Minor Planet Center (MPC) of the International Astronomical Union (IAU), further marking the region's growing role in global space Odeh said the comet will make its closest approach to the Sun on October 30, 2025, at a distance of 210 million kilometres. According to a NASA statement, '3I/ATLAS should remain visible to ground-based telescopes through September, after which it will pass too close to the Sun to observe. It is expected to reappear on the other side of the Sun by early December, allowing for renewed observations.'Astronomers around the world are now racing to better understand its physical properties. Jonathan McDowell, an astronomer at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, said the visible fuzziness of the object suggests it is made mostly of ice, not Moissl, head of planetary defence at the European Space Agency, confirmed its trajectory 'means it's not orbiting our star, but coming from interstellar space and flying off to there again.' He added that it is currently estimated to be 10 to 20 kilometres wide, potentially making it the largest interstellar object ever Harvard astronomer and alien technology theorist Avi Loeb has floated the idea that 3I/ATLAS could be an alien probe sent to us by an intelligent civilisation. He also suggested that we could use an existing spacecraft to intercept the object's path to understand its nature. In a paper, the researcher argued that NASA's Juno spacecraft, which was designed to study Jupiter and launched in 2011, could get close to 3I/ATLAS by March 14, 2026. But NASA is yet to deliver its opinion on the feasibility of this idea.

Look: Cat's paw in the sky? UAE astronomers capture larger-than-Moon-size nebula
If you're an avid cat person and also into astronomy, then you're in for a treat, as UAE astronomy officials just spotted the most adorable nebula — the Cat's Paw. Photographed from the skies of Abu Dhabi's desert, the nebula was captured under challenging conditions, after 10 gruelling hours. The cosmic wonder, made up from gas and dust, was situated in the Scorpius constellation, according to the Al-Khatem Astronomical Observatory. The nebula's unique shape is not the only stunning thing about it. Its apparent size is also slightly larger than the full moon, while its actual size is such that light, travelling at 300,000 kilometres per second, would take 320 years to cross it from one end to the other. The large emission nebula is also a birthplace for stars. An emission nebula is a cloud of gas and dust in space that glows as a result of energised electrons recombining with atoms, emitting light in the process. These nebulae are often associated with star formation, where young, hot stars emit ultraviolet radiation that ionizes the surrounding gas. The light captured in the image in 2025 was emitted from the nebula 4,370 years ago. So why is it named the Cat's Paw? You guessed it! It originates from the shape of a cat's paw. The red colour of the nebula, situated in the digital pads of the cat paw shape, indicates the presence of hydrogen gas. Meanwhile the blue colour, located inside the paw and inner pad, indicates the presence of oxygen gas. Capturing method Capturing the nebula was not an easy task, as its maximum altitude above the horizon is 30 degrees, making it significantly affected by light pollution and atmospheric interference. The nebula was observed by Osama Ghanam, Anas Mohammed and Khalfan Al Nuaimi. Meanwhile, the image was captured by Mohammed Odeh and processed by Haitham Hamdi. Two telescopes were used to capture the image, along with a colour camera and a light pollution filter. The light pollution level at the observation site was Bortle 6. It took approximately 9.75 hours to capture it, which consisted of 195 images, each with a 3-minute exposure. Ninety-two images were taken with the 5-inch telescope, and 103 images with the 4-inch telescope.

A total of 7,761 entries from 173 countries were received across the six categories of Health, Food, Energy, Water, Climate Action and Global High Schools, reflecting the Prize's continued role in advancing impactful solutions to pressing global challenges. Now in its 17th year, the Prize empowers small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), nonprofit organisations and high schools to develop and scale sustainable innovations that improve lives, especially in vulnerable and underserved communities. From clean energy and healthcare access to regenerative agriculture and safe drinking water, this year's submissions reflect a rising focus on technology-powered, community-led models that expand access where it's needed most. Submissions increased by 30% compared to the previous cycle. Early analysis shows that around 85% of all submissions came from the developing and emerging economies, with top contributions from India, Ethiopia, Uzbekistan, Brazil, and Indonesia. Participation was also high from developed countries like the United Arab Emirates and the United States of America, both making it into the top 10 submission countries. The Food (1,630) and Climate Action (1,880) categories attracted the highest number of entries, reflecting the global urgency around food security, ecosystem protection, and disaster resilience. These were followed by Health (1,497), Global High Schools (1,070), Water (863) and Energy (821). Submissions to the Health category grew by over 60% this year, with entries focusing on AI-enabled diagnostics, wearable tech, and decentralised care. Many also explored tech-enabled sustainable logistics and improved traceability to strengthen healthcare delivery systems. The Food category highlighted advances in precision agriculture and agri-robotics, with smart systems and drones helping farmers boost yields as well as circularity in food systems. In Energy, submissions revealed a growing interest in thermal energy storage and advanced low-carbon fuels, and broader energy transformation, including solutions for future-proofing energy systems to meet the growing global demand scenarios. Entries in the Water category explored innovative ways to expand freshwater access, including atmospheric water generation and low-energy desalination, as well as fintech tools that promote more transparent and equitable distribution. Climate Action entries addressed both mitigation and adaptation, featuring nature-based solutions, direct air carbon capture, predictive tools for resilience and disaster preparedness, and community-based conservation grounded in Indigenous knowledge. Youth-led submissions in Global High Schools reflected a remarkable surge in youth engagement and commitment to sustainability, with projects ranging from AI-powered climate monitoring and smart irrigation for school farms to low-cost water filtration and tech-based approaches to waste tracking and upcycling. Following the close of submissions, the Prize now enters the evaluation stage. All entries will be shortlisted by an independent research and analysis consultancy. A Selection Committee comprised of globally renowned industry experts will then assess the qualified entries and shortlist the candidates. The third and final tier of the evaluation process is the Jury, which will convene in October to unanimously elect the winners in each category. Winners will be announced at the Zayed Sustainability Prize Awards Ceremony on 13 January 2026, during Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week. Each winner in the organisational categories will receive US $1 million, while six high schools – representing the world's regions – will be awarded US $150,000 each to implement or expand their sustainability projects.
