Family-owned Scottish baker brand popularity surges

Glasgow-based bakery McGhee's, a fourth-generation family-owned business, noted this surge in brand popularity comes as it is expanding beyond its west of Scotland heartland with the aim of becoming 'a household name across the country'.
Its second place is among Scottish fast-moving consumer goods brands, ranked according to their popularity in Scotland.
The report reveals the ranking of shoppers' most chosen food and drink brands over the 52 weeks to October 2024, with dairy Graham's, teacake and caramel wafer producer Tunnock's, and pie maker Bells placed third, fourth and fifth respectively.
In its report, Worldpanel by Numerator says: 'McGhee's is gaining ground through coverage across breakfast, lunch and snack moments. Like others in the bakery space, it faces pressure from evolving eating habits.
"But its tone and outreach - especially on social media - suggest a push to connect with younger consumers. If the brand can continue to win new buyers while retaining its core, it has a good shot at sustainable growth in a segment that is otherwise softening.'
Worldpanel by Numerator adds: 'From a portfolio perspective, McGhee's has also seen notable frequency gains across its top-selling SKUs (stock-keeping units), including rising repeat rates for staples like soft white floury rolls and pineapple tarts. An uplift in online channel sales also hints at improved digital shelf presence and broader accessibility beyond the traditional bedrock of supermarkets.'
Meanwhile, Worldpanel by Numerator says of Irn-Bru: 'Irn Bru remains Scotland's most chosen brand. That result isn't surprising for this iconic drinks brand, but it is instructive.
'The brand continues to find its place in the middle of the day - lunch and afternoon snacks - even as pressure builds at evening meals. It's growing across a wider range of age groups, which suggests a deliberate shift in how it connects with shoppers.'

The consumer research ranks McGhee's as 13th most chosen among all fast-moving consumer goods brands in Scotland. Among bakery brands, McGhee's is third most chosen in Scotland, behind industry giants Warburtons and Hovis.
Warburtons is the highest-ranking fast-moving consumer goods brand in Scotland, followed by Cadburys and then Walkers, with Irn-Bru 11th in this table and Graham's 14th.
McGhee's noted: 'With a brand penetration of 50.8%, shoppers are buying McGhee's products an average of nearly 11 times per year.'
It added: 'The Worldpanel by Numerator report highlighted strong sales of soft white rolls and potato scones among the products driving that growth.'
McGhee's revealed that, in the last six months, its pre-packed roll sales have grown 42% on last year, declaring the 'launch of a new sourdough roll for more health-conscious consumers has also contributed to that success'.
It added: 'In recent years continued investment in plant, equipment, and site expansion has enabled McGhee's to significantly increase production capacity."
McGhee's observed this had helped sales of its 'signature rolls' to triple in volume.
It added: 'McGhee's supplies a significant share of Scotland's bread rolls - around half are sold through supermarket retailers and independent convenience stores. Alongside its famous rolls, customer favourites such as empire biscuits, caramel shortcake, [and] assorted tarts, as well as pineapple and raspberry tarts, also continue to see strong demand.

'The figures arrive as McGhee's embarks on an ambitious brand refresh ahead of the bakery's 90th anniversary next year, drawing on its heritage, reliability, and pride in feeding Scotland for generations.'
The business said it hoped this would 'drive further growth, which would be reflected in next year's report'.
The metric used in the study, consumer reach points, takes into account a brand's penetration and frequency, as well as the number of households in the country.
Lesley Ann Gray, strategic insight director at Worldpanel by Numerator, said: 'For brands, the chances of finding a place in household cupboards and fridges around the world are as uncertain as a coin toss, with inflation and geopolitical pressures heavily influencing how people shop and which products they choose.
'That does not mean, however, that growth is purely down to chance. Even so, brands should anticipate that next year the odds of growth will decline from an even split, 50:50, to something more like 45:55, which means they will need to work even harder to achieve success.'
She added: 'In Scotland, where overall consumption has remained flat, those [brand] choices tell us even more. There's no tide lifting all boats. To hold position, let alone grow, a brand must find relevance in how people eat, shop, and live. It's no longer enough to be visible. You have to be useful, and consistently so.'

A Scottish space company is celebrating a 'huge milestone' after it was granted a launch operator licence for one of its rockets. However, Skyrora is still searching for a pad to blast off from, with none available this year at least. The company, which has a factory in Cumbernauld, North Lanarkshire, have been granted a launch licence for its suborbital rocket, Skylark. Later, the company hopes to use a much larger rocket called XL to deliver satellites into orbit. The licence enables Skyrora to launch from the UK's licensed 'vertical launch' spaceport: SaxaVord on the northernmost point of the Shetland Islands. But there are not currently any pads free there. Volodymyr Levykin spoke to the PA news agency just before the launch licence was announced by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). He said Skylark, a single-stage rocket measuring almost 12 metres long, would go 'up and down' when it launches – taking a 50 kilo payload to an altitude of about 500 kilometres (310 miles). If successful, this will mean it crosses the boundary into space but it will not deliver a satellite into orbit. Mr Levykin said of the licence: 'This is a huge milestone for us because at least half of the work, maybe 70% has been done. Looking forward to actually launching. 'The whole application was based on SaxaVord in Shetland Isles as a launch location, however, there are some room for adjustments and flexibility.' Mr Levykin said SaxaVord 'is not available any more for us to launch, this year at least'. Earlier this year, another space company called Orbex announced it would move its launch operation to SaxaVord from the under-construction Sutherland Spaceport on Scotland's north coast. Mr Levykin said his company is now considering other options, including potentially using the Sutherland site vacated by Orbex. He said: 'At the moment we're trying to figure out – what is the legal structure, what is owned, what is not owned? 'What is the capacity of the current management, the jurisdiction? 'But you take this apart – practically, it's absolutely do-able because we have the mobile launch concept.' He said this would allow Skyrora to launch its rocket in a variety of locations around Europe with just a few days of preparation. In October 2022, the company attempted to launch Skylark from Iceland, but a software problem led to it falling into the sea just after lift-off. Ultimately, Skyrora wants to use its 23-metre XL rocket to launch about eight times a year, to capitalise on the burgeoning global demand for small satellite launches. They are aiming to do the initial test-firing of this rocket's first stage this year, though the location has not yet been revealed. It would involve nine engines firing at the same time. Rob Bishton, chief executive of the UK Civil Aviation Authority, said: 'Granting a home-grown company, Skyrora, its launch licence is a major milestone for our space sector and our nation. 'Our work as the UK's space regulator is enabling the burgeoning launch industry to safely grow, bringing new jobs and investment with it.' Richard Lochhead, the Scottish Government's business minister, said: 'Securing the UK's first launch operator licence is a landmark moment in Skyrora's plans to become the first company in the UK to build and launch a rocket into space.' UK aviation and space minister Mike Kane said: 'I am thrilled we've reached this important milestone in the UK space sector, and I congratulate Skyrora for being the first UK company to receive a rocket launch licence.' Scottish Secretary Ian Murray said: 'This launch licence isn't just one giant leap for Skyrora – it's a massive boost to the whole of Scotland and the wider UK's space sector. 'Becoming the first British company to manufacture and send a rocket into space from the UK will be a hugely significant moment.' UK space minister Sir Chris Bryant said: 'The award of the first-ever licence to a UK firm to launch satellites from British soil is a landmark moment for our burgeoning space sector – as well as a clear statement of intent. 'Demand for satellites in Europe alone is expected to be worth 50 billion US dollars (£37 billion) by 2033 and having the homegrown capacity to launch satellites stands to pull lucrative contracts and investment into the UK. 'But this isn't all just jam tomorrow. This is an industry that is creating jobs and driving growth right across the UK right now, including Scotland where Skyrora is based and from where their rockets will launch. A Cardiff firm has launched an AI-powered platform designed to help steel manufacturers to reduce waste, lower carbon emissions and improve production efficiency. from Nightingale HQ (NHQ), is purpose-built for the reinforcement steel industry and has already worked with manufacturers such as Midland Steel to use digital tools to address practical, day-to-day challenges such as automating data extraction, optimising reinforcing bar (rebar) production planning, and monitoring environmental impact. The firm said the launch comes at a critical time for the industry, aligning with the UK Government's newly announced £725 billion infrastructure investment strategy. The strategy, which emphasises large-scale public infrastructure development, is underpinned by digital innovation and a strong commitment to achieving net zero. In line with the UK strategy, the Wales-made platform can impact the wider UK market by finding waste-cutting opportunities beyond the ability of human effort, helping manufacturers increase revenue and save tonnes of steel from scrap, the firm said.
