Davante Adams recalls the time he got hit so hard that he bit through his tongue

'I couldn't eat for like a week and a half'
Davante Adams is not a wide receiver who's afraid to go over the middle and take a shot from a safety or linebacker. It's part of what makes him so great, but it's also led to some painful moments throughout his career.
During an interview on the 'Dan Patrick Show' Wednesday, the Los Angeles Rams receiver recalled the time he got hit so hard by New England Patriots linebacker Jamie Collins that he couldn't eat for a week and a half after.
Why? Because he wasn't wearing a mouth guard and bit through his tongue on impact.
'My second year, preseason, we were playing the Patriots and I ran another slant and thought I was getting busy after,' Adams said. 'This was before I would wear a mouthpiece. Caught it, was getting ready to turn up and Jamie Collins hit me in my – like, one of these, in your chest – and then raised up so he made me bite through my tongue and I couldn't eat food for like a week and a half. I had to go on a strictly liquid diet.'
Naturally, Patrick asked why Adams didn't wear a mouth guard at that point in his career and he admits the logic isn't sound.
'Well, my reason is going to be even dumber than not wearing a mouthpiece,' Adams said.
It's because he wore a gold grill during games, which started back in his high school days in East Palo Alto.
'I would wear a gold grill – like, the gold teeth – in games. So I wore the tops and bottoms in games and it started in high school because it was kind of like a culture thing. I grew up in East Palo Alto and that was a real popular thing. Guys wore grills and I just decided to keep it and it kind of worked as an intimidation factor, a little bit. People would see it and be like, 'Oh, (expletive). This dude's wearing gold teeth in a game? Oh my god.' And then I would talk a little crazier to them, too, and put all that together.'
Thankfully, Adams decided to wear a mouth guard the very next game after taking that shot from Collins.
'So, yeah. Not the best reason and I put one in the next game after that,' he said.

Watch: Patriots rookie makes play of the day after quiet training camp

New England Patriots wide receiver Efton Chism III put an end to a thus-far quiet training camp with a diving touchdown catch at Monday's practice. The undrafted rookie's immediate rise in the receivers' room was one of the biggest talking points over the spring. However, things have been eerily silent on the Chism front ever since the start of training camp. He has quickly gone from being a dark horse many predicted to make the team to being left off most 53-man roster projections. With that said, there is still plenty of training camp left to go, and Chism finally made his mark on a beautiful touchdown reception down the right sideline on a pass play from quarterback Joshua Dobbs. It isn't out of the realm of possibility that the Patriots could keep six or even seven receivers on their final roster. Those extra spots being open could mean an opportunity for Chism to make the team. But Chism will need to give the team a reason to keep him around. His reliable hands and speed getting in and out of his routes are reminiscent of past Patriots greats, like Danny Amendola and Julian Edelman. We'll see if it translates to game action when the Patriots go head-to-head with the Washington Commanders in Friday's preseason opener. Follow Patriots Wire on Twitter and Facebook. WR Terry McLaurin reportedly makes move after stalled negotiations

Washington Commanders All-Pro wide receiver Terry McLaurin has reportedly requested a trade after stalled contract negotiations, per NFL insider Jordan Schultz. McLaurin is currently in the final year of his contract with the Commanders, and he has been seeking a long-term extension with the team. After holding out from mandatory minicamp, he arrived at training camp as an apparent hold in. FOX Sports' Henry McKenna reported last week that McLaurin was willing to explore every path to a new deal, including asking to be traded. The latter is obviously a last-ditch effort that only widens the growing rift between the two sides. McKenna wrote: "If necessary, McLaurin will explore every option, including a holdout, a hold-in and a trade request, per the source. "Everything will be on the table," the source told me." It's surprising that the Commanders let things escalate to this point considering McLaurin was one of their best players on an improbable NFC Championship run last season. He served as Jayden Daniels' top receiving target with 82 catches for 1,096 yards and 13 touchdowns. One would think the New England Patriots would be one of many teams calling the Commanders on a potential blockbuster trade for McLaurin. Follow Patriots Wire on Twitter and Facebook.
