Lebanon's health minister approves full medical coverage for Beirut blast victims

LBCI08-07-2025
Lebanon's Health Minister Rakan Nasreddine has approved full medical coverage for those wounded in the 2020 Beirut Port explosion, the founding committee representing the victims announced Tuesday.
In a statement, the committee said the decision followed coordination with the Health Ministry and came after it presented detailed accounts of the victims' ongoing suffering and medical needs.
The ministry also expressed readiness, in collaboration with donor agencies, to provide prosthetics, medical supplies, and additional support, pending parliamentary approval of a draft law submitted by the committee.
The proposed law seeks to grant blast victims the same benefits afforded to wounded Lebanese army personnel.

26 Palestinians killed in latest wave of Israeli bombings on Gaza

The Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza announced on Saturday that hospitals received the bodies of 59 martyrs, including nine retrieved from under the rubble, and 208 injuries over 24 hours. Many victims remain trapped beneath debris and along roads, unreachable due to continued bombardment. Since October 7, 2023, as of June 16, 2025, the death toll of the Israeli genocide in Gaza has surged to 57,882 Palestinians killed and 138,095 injured. Since March 18, 2025, the total toll has risen to 7,311 killed and 26,054 wounded. Moreover, as the Israeli-made famine looms over Gaza, 17 starved Palestinians were killed since early morning, and over 53 were injured while trying to receive aid at designated 'aid distribution sites' and were later transported to hospitals, as per the Ministry's report. The death toll among Palestinians killed while seeking food aid in designated distribution zones has now climbed to 805, with more than 5,252 others wounded, according to the report. At least 26 Palestinians were killed on Saturday in a series of Israeli air and artillery strikes across the Gaza Strip. The attacks targeted residential buildings and shelters housing forcibly displaced families in Gaza City, Deir al-Balah, and Khan Younis. According to Al Mayadeen's correspondent, the bombardment intensified in the early hours, striking multiple densely populated areas. Casualties were reported in several neighborhoods, with a number of those killed being women and children. Among the victims was Yousef al-Zaq, a figure whose life came to symbolize the enduring struggle of the Palestinian people. He was killed when an airstrike struck his family's apartment on Al-Thawra Street in central Gaza. Born in 2008 inside Israeli prisons, Yousef was once recognized as the youngest prisoner in the world; a child whose first breath was taken behind bars, beside his detained mother, Fatima al-Zaq. Their story captured international attention at the time. Both were eventually released, but Yousef's life, marked from the start by occupation and resistance, ended under the same shadow that defined his birth. Born in an Israeli prison in 2008 before his mother's release, Yousef Al-Zaq, once the world's youngest prisoner was martyred today in an Israeli airstrike on Gaza. death has resonated widely, highlighting the generational toll of the war on Palestinian families. In western Gaza City, four Palestinians were killed in a strike on a building that housed displaced individuals. Another strike targeted the home of the al-Safadi family on Yafa Street, resulting in the deaths of three people. In a separate incident, four Palestinians were killed near the Islamic University gate when a tent sheltering them was hit. Three others were killed in the Sheikh Radwan neighborhood after a strike struck a residential apartment. Concurrently, a new massacre unfolded in the al-Manasra displacement camp in Deir al-Balah, where Sohaib al-Qarinawi, his wife, and their children were all killed when their tent was bombed. These attacks come amid a deepening humanitarian crisis, as tens of thousands of displaced Palestinians remain without safe shelter, frequently targeted in places once considered refuge. On a related note, the UN human rights office reported on Friday that it has documented at least 798 Palestinian fatalities linked to aid distribution points in Gaza, including those operated by the US- and Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), as well as sites near humanitarian convoys run by other relief agencies, including the United Nations. The GHF, which began "distributing aid" in late May, relies on private US logistics and security contractors to deliver supplies into Gaza, bypassing the UN-coordinated aid system that "Israel" has accused of being vulnerable to diversion by Palestinian Resistance groups. The UN, however, has strongly criticized this parallel framework, calling it "inherently unsafe" and a violation of humanitarian neutrality principles. "Up until the seventh of July, we've recorded now 798 killings, including 615 in the vicinity of the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation sites, and 183 presumably on the route of aid convoys," said Ravina Shamdasani, spokesperson for the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), during a press briefing in Geneva.

Gaza mothers starving, infant deaths reach critical levels: UN

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has issued a grave warning over the dire conditions faced by tens of thousands of pregnant and breastfeeding women in Gaza, as extreme hunger continues to jeopardize their health and the survival of their newborns. In a statement shared by UNFPA's Arab States Regional Office on X, the agency revealed that approximately 50,000 women in Gaza 'haven't eaten for days.' Malnourishment is preventing mothers from breastfeeding, while baby formula remains unavailable due to ongoing shortages. This has resulted in a spike in premature and underweight births. 'Babies are born too soon, too small,' the post read. 'Newborns are at risk of death or lifelong health issues.' 50,000 pregnant & breastfeeding women in #Gaza haven't eaten for are born too soon, too are too malnourished to breastfeed — & formula is are at risk of death or lifelong health is preventable. #OpenUpGaza Let aid in. the crisis as preventable, UNFPA called for immediate humanitarian access, urging: '#OpenUpGaza Let aid in.' UN agencies continue to report severe restrictions on humanitarian access, compounding the suffering of women, children, and other vulnerable groups. Aid organizations have consistently appealed for unimpeded delivery of essential life-saving assistance. Since the genocide began in October 2023, nearly 57,600 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza by Israeli occupation forces, the majority of whom are women and children. Constant bombardment has devastated infrastructure, triggered famine-like conditions, and contributed to the spread of disease. In November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Security Minister Yoav Gallant over charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Separately, "Israel" is also facing a genocide case at the International Court of Justice. Doctors Without Borders (Médecins Sans Frontières, MSF) released new data this week pointing to a drastic increase in child mortality across Gaza. According to a retrospective mortality survey conducted by its epidemiological unit, Epicentre, the death rate for children under five has increased tenfold since the war began. The survey covered 2,523 individuals, including MSF staff and their families. It found that the overall death rate was five times higher than pre-war levels, while mortality among newborns under one month rose sixfold. 'The children of Gaza are being decimated,' said Amande Bazerolle, deputy manager of MSF's emergency department. 'Forty-eight percent of the people who died from blast injuries among our colleagues' households were children, and 40 percent were under 10 years old.' According to the report, over 2% of those surveyed have died since October 7, 2023, and 7% have sustained injuries. Around 75% of deaths were war-related, mainly due to explosions. The survey also underscored the collapse of Gaza's healthcare system. Two-thirds of chronically ill patients reported interruptions in treatment. Even among MSF families, who had relatively better access to care, 20% experienced at least one injury from blasts or gunfire within their household. 'This is the result of the Israeli campaign to systematically destroy the health system and the means of survival of the whole population,' MSF stated. The organization called on "Israel" to halt what it described as a 'genocidal campaign,' lift the blockade, and enable urgent medical evacuations, particularly for children. Israeli soldier suicides surge amid Gaza, Lebanon war trauma

Israeli media reported on Thursday the discovery of a dead reserve soldier in the illegal settlement neighborhood of Har Homa in occupied al-Quds. The incident comes amid a spike in suicides among Israeli occupation soldiers since the beginning of the war on Gaza in October 2023. According to Haaretz, the number of suicides in the Israeli occupation forces has risen to unprecedented levels since the war began. The report revealed that between October 7 and the end of 2023, seven soldiers took their own lives, while 21 suicides were recorded in 2024. Since the start of 2025, approximately 14 soldiers have reportedly died by suicide. Despite the rising trend, the Israeli occupation forces has refused to disclose the official number of suicides for the current year, stating it will release a full report only at the end of 2025. The secrecy has raised questions about transparency within the military command, particularly as psychological trauma among troops continues to escalate. Over the weekend, another occupation soldier reportedly took his own life after suffering from severe psychological distress following his deployment in Gaza and southern Lebanon. The war's mental health toll has become a critical issue for the Israeli regime, especially as reports indicate a severe manpower shortage in the ranks. As reported by Haaretz, the Israeli military has begun enlisting reservists suffering from trauma and other psychological conditions, even if they are currently undergoing treatment. One commander told the newspaper, 'Because our soldiers are not committed to fighting, we are forced to recruit individuals who are not in a stable mental state,' adding, 'We fight with what we have, even if we are certain their psychological conditions are unstable.' The total number of Israeli soldier suicides since October 7, 2023, has reportedly reached at least 35 by the end of 2024. Informed sources noted that the military has buried several soldiers who died by suicide without holding military funerals or issuing official statements. One officer told Haaretz that the military has recently resorted to pressuring soldiers to engage in combat but is facing difficulties in mobilizing them for service. The report also revealed manipulation in the published compliance rates, with both officers and soldiers confirming that the official figures do not accurately represent the true level of participation among reservists. Security sources stressed to the newspaper that the Israeli military needs to increase its troop numbers fourfold in order to control key points in the Gaza Strip, amid mounting security challenges.
