POST is about putting people before profits

EVER wonder why this newspaper that you are reading, the POST, is persevering against overwhelming odds to make sure it gets onto the streets each week.
When so many titles locally and around the world have shut shop, why is the POST still publishing?
It is well-known that print readership has plummeted over the past decade - a situation worsened by the Covid-19 pandemic - and readers have migrated online, preferring instant access to news via websites and social media. And the POST has not escaped this phenomenon.
However, Independent Media, which owns this newspaper, is all too aware that newspapers are more than just businesses - they are the custodians of truth, the guardians of local identity, and the chroniclers of history. Thus when one fights against all odds to keep publishing, it's often for reasons that go far beyond profit.

The launch of the POST's new baby, POST PLUS, a free community-focused publication that will be delivered every Thursday, door-to-door, to 80 000 homes in Chatsworth and Phoenix, is more than an initiative strategised by bean counters. Of course, with such a large number of copies of POST PLUS in circulation, advertisers will naturally be attracted like bees to honey.
But while the added revenue will help to pay the bills, keeping the POST flag flying is a project that is committed to putting people before profits. Unlike government mouthpieces, independent journalism holds power to account. In communities where voices are suppressed or misinformation is widespread, a newspaper can be a last line of defence for truth.
Since March 1955 when POST's predecessor Golden City Post was launched, this newspaper has weaved itself into the community's social fabric by documenting everyday triumphs, struggles, and milestones. It has given the Indian community its own voice, while celebrating this group's culture, and fostering a shared sense of belonging.
During the apartheid era, laws were designed to protect the racist government from exposure and control what people read, heard and saw. The POST had to carefully negotiate a minefield of legislation that restricted the publication of information about banned liberation movements. However, by reflecting in the main the emotions of the Indian community - its sorrows, pain and pangs as well as its passions, delights and pride - this weekly continued to remain relevant even during the dark days.
For seven decades, the POST has kept its finger tightly on the pulse of the community and continued dishing out editorial and advertisements of greatest relevance to those of Indian descent.
But at a time when we are all striving to be one people, and for the sake of unity don't want to see differences in each other, is there a place for newspapers that cater for a particular community?
Yes, there is, if only to preserve and sustain cultural heritage.
Indian media is the lifeblood of Indian culture. The culture that has been passed from generation to generation since the indentured workers or girmitiyas landed in this country as slave labour, is a vibrant mosaic woven from thousands of years of history, philosophy, and tradition.
Locally, there are religions with temples, mosques and churches; deep-rooted concepts like karma, dharma and reincarnation; festivals and celebrations such as Diwali, Holi, Navaratri and Eid; cuisine with fiery curries, yummy breyani, and sweetmeats; traditional clothing such as saris, salwar kameez and kurta-pyjamas; classical dance forms like Bharatanatyam and Kathak; music ranging from Carnatic and Hindustani classical to Bollywood and folk traditions; and joint and multigenerational families.
Incidentally, as I am writing this column in English, I am listening to the Tamil song Thunbam Nergayil in raga Desh on Spotify. The lyrics by poet Bharatidasan tell how the travails of our lives can be lessened by Tamil poetry, song, dance and wisdom.
Back to Indian newspapers.
When lawyer Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, later to be known as the Mahatma, was in South Africa, he launched the Indian Opinion, which, during its 60-year spell, exposed the harshness of racism. Before the Indian Opinion, there was The Indian World, which was established in 1898. Three years later, in 1901, a Tamil newspaperman, PS Aiyar founded a bilingual Tamil-English paper Colonial Indian News, which was published weekly. A year later, in 1902, he founded another publication called The African Chronicle.
Between the 1940s and 1970s, other local Indian newspapers also galvanised the Indian community's rightful place under the South African sun, by aligning with the anti-apartheid struggle. Durban-based Indian publications The Leader and The Graphic were instrumental in creating an Indian identity by staking the political position of the community.
Given the low budgets available for production, the standard of layout and printing of these two stalwart tabloids were not great, but with good writing The Leader and The Graphic made for serious political reads. The editorials by founder Dhanee Bramdaw and editor/columnist Ranji Nowbath in The Leader and by founder Kannabiran Pillay and editor/columnist Pat Poovalingam in The Graphic, mirrored the political agenda of the Natal Indian Congress and each week clearly articulated the political aspirations of Indians in their pages.
In days gone by, no self-respecting Indian worker dare come home on Friday evenings without oily brown paper bags of bhajia, boondhi, sev and nuts from Victory Lounge under one arm and the POST, The Leader or The Graphic under the other. By the way, I am content to boast that I cut my journalistic teeth on The Graphic.
Our Constitution safeguards diversity by recognising the linguistic and cultural differences of people. Thus, having niched publications to cover community-specific issues is not necessarily tantamount to practising editorial racism. It reflects a nation's diversity. In any case, non-niche publications such as the Daily News and Mercury generally give stories with an Indian flavour a wide berth, unless they are scandalous or sensational.
It is worth mentioning that when The Mercury on Thursday November 22, 1860, announced the arrival of the first batch of indentured labourers on the SS Truro on its front page under the headline 'The Coolies Are Here', it stated as follows: 'They were a queer, comical, foreign looking, very Oriental like crowd. The men with their huge muslin turbans, bare scraggy shin bones, and coloured garments, the women with their flashing eyes, long dishevelled pitchy hair, with their half covered well-formed figures, and their keen inquisitive glances, the children with their meagre, intelligent, cute and humorous countenances mounted on bodies of unconscionable fragility, were all evidently beings of a different race and kind to any we have yet seen either in Africa or England.'
Today, 165 years later, we no longer look foreign. We are part and parcel of South African society. Our shin bones are well fleshed out. Our women do not have 'flashy eyes' and certainly have beautiful, well-groomed hair. Our children are not skinny. Of course, they have not just come ashore after spending six weeks on the open deck of a ship with wretched food, and minimum sanitation and ablution facilities.
Noteworthy is that the reason for the existence of the POST, the Rising Sun and The Tabloid stables of free community newspapers, and now POST PLUS, lies deeper than race, and rather in lifestyle, the emotional bond that a historically immigrant group has with its motherland, and the fears associated with minority groups. Cultural authenticity and the forces of tradition and heritage need not be sacrificed at the altar of modernity or political correctness.
The world over, there is a strong argument for the relevance and popularity of newspapers - and other media platforms such as radio and television - that target a specific community. The Zulu middle-class newspaper Isolezwe, has a loyal readership because of its niche market.
The Indian has a right to enjoy that which appeals to him or her. And is also happy to share with others. Not for nothing that Willards produces 'Bunny Chow Crinkle Cut Chips' and Woolies stocks 'Halaal dhania lamb sausage' spiced with chilli for a strong bite.

A recent report titled ''Intimidation on All Fronts: Press Freedom and Media Safety in Pakistan'', released ahead of World Press Freedom Day 2025, paints a grim picture. Journalists in Pakistan face a growing array of threats: surveillance, legal intimidation, censorship, financial pressure, and in some cases, violent attacks. Next Stay Close ✕ From the military regimes of Ayub Khan and Zia-ul-Haq to the more modern, media-savvy control strategies under Pervez Musharraf, the trend has remained the same — muzzle dissent and protect power. The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority, formed in 2002, was meant to regulate broadcast media. But over time, it has morphed into a weapon used to punish outlets and journalists who challenge the state narrative. Recent developments have added digital spaces to the list of controlled domains. The Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act, initially aimed at curbing cybercrime, has often been misused to target online journalists and civil society voices. Amendments passed this year have broadened the state's powers even further, allowing for arrests and censorship under vague definitions of 'offensive content.' During the 2024 general elections, media access was deliberately restricted. Entire regions, including the capital Islamabad, faced mobile and internet shutdowns, severely hampering election coverage. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, then under the command of a retired general, enforced these blackouts on instructions from the Ministry of Interior. The timing raised serious concerns about transparency and the integrity of the electoral process. One of the most alarming proposals is the creation of the Pakistan Media Development Authority. Critics argue that it would function more as a state enforcer than a media watchdog, with powers to shut down outlets and prosecute journalists in special tribunals. Such bodies, in a democracy, would be unthinkable. But in Pakistan, they are becoming tools to silence critical reporting under a veil of legality. Economic pressure also plays a part. The government controls a large portion of advertising revenue, and this leverage is used to reward compliant media houses and starve those that refuse to toe the line. Newspapers like *Dawn* and *Daily Sahafat*, which have maintained editorial independence, have faced sharp revenue cuts, while pro-government platforms remain well-funded. But the financial and legal constraints pale in comparison to the physical dangers. Journalists are being harassed, abducted, or worse. In 2024 alone, seven journalists were killed. These included well-known names like Khalil Jibran and Saad Ahmed, whose deaths have not led to meaningful investigations or justice. The case of Arshad Sharif, shot dead in Kenya after fleeing threats in Pakistan, remains a haunting symbol of the lengths to which journalists must go to avoid repression, only to meet violence abroad. Women in the industry are also increasingly targeted. Javeria Siddique, the widow of Arshad Sharif and a journalist in her own right, has faced ongoing harassment both online and off. Such stories are no longer isolated incidents—they reflect a pattern. The Pakistan Press Foundation documented 34 cases of physical assaults, digital threats, or kidnapping in just the first half of 2025. Dozens of journalists have either been arrested or forced into exile. Even prominent figures like Imran Riaz Khan have been repeatedly detained for challenging state institutions, with little or no legal recourse. As South Africans, we should not look away. The experiences of Pakistani journalists should remind us that the freedom to write, question, and investigate must never be taken for granted. When military or political elites control narratives, societies lose not only their access to truth but also the accountability that keeps democracies a time where disinformation is rampant and authoritarian tactics are spreading across borders, the struggle of Pakistani journalists must be seen for what it is — a frontline battle for democracy. South Africa, with its hard-won media freedoms, must stand in solidarity with those who risk everything for the simple act of telling the truth.

Corruption allegations threaten the ANC's renewal campaign in KZN
Under fire education MEC Sipho Hlomuka Image: Independent Newspapers Archives The African National Congress (ANC) in KZN faces a potentially catastrophic blow to its image and ongoing renewal campaign, as fresh allegations of corruption against key leaders surface. Siphamandla Zondi, a prominent political analyst, offered a stark assessment, asserting that the continuing association of the party with corruption diminishes its prospects for recovery following the dismal performance in the 2024 elections. Zondi's comments emerged in the wake of serious accusations against KwaZulu-Natal MEC of education, Sipho Hlomuka, and Health MEC, Nomagugu Simelane-Mngadi. Both leaders are now at the centre of investigations that could significantly tarnish the party's reputation and deepen public distrust. Next Stay Close ✕ He underscored the urgency for the ANC to dissociate itself from any acts of corruption and to ensure accountability amongst its leaders, especially given that the party's own renewal programme mandates such actions. Zondi insisted that the ANC should promptly initiate an internal investigation into the allegations and refer the two MECs to its integrity commission. 'It is in the interest of the two MECs to have their names cleared, and it is in the ANC's interest to clear its own name quickly,' he stated, emphasising the critical importance of a swift response to uphold the credibility of the government. Political turbulence surrounded Hlomuka and Simelane, after claims surfaced that their personal business affiliations may have improperly influenced government contract awards. In an interview with Newzroom Afrika, Hlomuka contended that he had distanced himself from the implicated company, insisting he was no longer part of it and was unaware of its ongoing activities. 'If it has received any tenders, that information will come out in the investigation,' he added, urging patience for the forthcoming revelations. Provincial Premier Thami Ntuli has demanded thorough explanations from both MECs following the serious corruption allegations. Asserting the need for transparency, Ntuli confirmed that he had proactively reached out to both executives for clarification as soon as he became aware of the claims. 'I would be writing to them so that they give me full information regarding the allegations,' he noted, awaiting their responses by today. Hlomuka's spokesperson Muzi Mahlambi confirmed that the premier had written to the MEC requesting him to give explanation on the allegations regarding school nutrition. Mahlambi alluded that the MEC has also responded to the letter. 'The MEC (Hlomuka) has responded to the letter from the Premier, however, we must give both the MEC and Premier space to process the responses as per premier's request. "What we also need to indicate is that the current tender or contract that is in place now is not disturbed,' said Mhlambi. Further complicating matters for the ANC, Health MEC Simelane faces scrutiny over her family's potential improper gain from government contracts. The implications of her alleged business ties could further erode public confidence in the party's commitment to ethical governance. Zondi reiterated the need for the party to reconcile these allegations with its core promise of ethical governance, which he stated was crucial for any hopes of renewal. 'Defending its own is to assume their innocence without verification,' he cautioned. 'It has caused the party many problems in the past.' With mounting pressure from within and outside the party, the ANC's response to the allegations against Hlomuka and Simelane will be pivotal in shaping its future. Simelane-Mngadi rubbished the allegations against her, threatening to take legal action against people who have implicated her in the Ithala corruption loan scandal. It was alleged that the MEC used her position of power as the chairperson of the Agriculture and Rural Development portfolio committee some years ago to get funding for a family company in Ithala and in government. The allegations surfaced on social media platforms a week ago. However, in statements she issued last week, she reiterated that the allegations were false and malicious, saying she was exploring the legal route. 'I'm exploring legal action to protect my name and my integrity and take to task those who deliberately and nefariously wish to impugn my good name. In our system of government, the separation of powers is clear, MPLs, including committee chairpersons, have no role in Supply Chain Management or operational decisions of departments. Therefore, I could not have influenced any procurement processes."These facts are easily verifiable, and their deliberate distortion shows that this is not an attempt to inform the public, but rather a well-calculated political smear campaign,' concluded Simelane-Mngadi. July 2021 Unrest: Did SA's Political Leadership Learn Any Lessons?

Image: AFP Prof. Bheki Mngomezulu July 2025 marks the fourth anniversary of the July 2021 unrest. On the evening of July 9, 2021, riots broke out across KwaZulu-Natal. In the evening of July 11, 2021, these riots had spread to Gauteng. By the time this civil unrest ended, over 350 people had lost their lives. Some were injured while others lost their property, businesses and jobs. Racial tensions rose in KZN. This untenable situation aggravated the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. By August 12, 2022, over 5,500 people had been arrested in connection with these riots – some cases are still active. But how did we get here? Could the riots have been prevented? Who should be held responsible for acting recklessly, thereby leading the country into this chaos? More importantly, did our political leadership learn anything from this incident to ensure that the country does not descend into chaos again in the future? If not, where is our country going? To answer some of these and other related questions, it is of cardinal importance to trace the origin of this incident, reflect on how it unfolded, and compare it with the current situation as a precaution on what could potentially happen if the political leadership turns a blind eye on the concerns raised by South Africans, which leave them frustrated. In a nutshell, the 2021 unrests were caused by factors which could have been easily avoided if the political leadership and the legal fraternity had demonstrated erudite leadership, objective reading of the situation and nonpartisan action. Firstly, the Zondo Commission misread the political mood in the country. It lacked objectivity in handling the witnesses who appeared before it. The great mistake was for this structure to behave like a court. In a court of law, there is a litigant and a defendant. By contrast, in the case of a commission, everyone who appears before it is a witness. Unlike a court of law, the job of the commission is to get facts right, compile a report, and make recommendations to be considered by the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) and relevant bodies. When former President Jacob Zuma appeared before the Zondo Commission, he received a hostile reception and was treated differently. When this issue was raised, some people outside of the Commission argued that such treatment was justified because Zuma was accused of wrongdoing. This was the first mistake. Given this hostile treatment, Zuma refused to return to the Commission. Justice Zondo approached the Constitutional Court and asked it to rule on Zuma's decision. He went further to prescribe a sentence of two years if the court found him guilty. This was bizarre. It is not common for a litigant to play the role of a judge. Video Player is loading. It went further to state that it was depriving him of his right to remain silent as had been the case, for example, with the late Dudu Myeni. This was also strange. When Zuma failed to appear before the Commission as instructed to do so, he was accused of contempt of court. Subsequently, Justice Sisi Khampepe read a ruling which was riddled with emotions, sending Zuma to jail for fifteen months with no option of a fine. Zuma was given until July 4 to hand himself in, failing which the police were instructed to arrest him on July 7. Khampepe defended her ruling by saying that Zuma was the one who appointed the Commission. As such, it did not make sense why he was frustrating its function. This statement was misplaced on many grounds. Firstly, Zuma did not voluntarily establish the Commission; he was forced by a court of law to do so as Sec 84(2)(f) of the Constitution states. Even then, his prerogative to appoint the person to chair the Commission was removed from him by Advocate Thuli Madonsela's report. Lastly, Sec 9(1) of the Constitution states that 'everyone is equal before the law.' Indeed, Zuma was sent to Estcourt prison. This happened although some South Africans had already raised concerns that the political leadership and the judiciary had colluded to crucify Zuma. Word spread that if Zuma were incarcerated, there would be riots. The political leadership ignored this warning. There was dereliction of duty on the side of the security cluster. When it became clear that the intelligence agency, the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the metro police were struggling to contain the situation, the South African Defence Force (SANDF) was deployed in Gauteng and KZN to suppress the riots as part of Operation Prosper. Eventually, the situation calmed down. On September 5, 2021, Arthur Fraser released Zuma on medical parole. Zuma served his parole period and was supposed to be a free man. Intriguingly, the court ruled that Fraser had erred in his decision to release him. The fact that Zuma had completed his parole period did not seem to matter. He was sent back to Estcourt Correctional Service. Eventually, President Ramaphosa released him together with other prisoners. By then, the damage had already been done. Now, the earlier question becomes relevant. What lessons did the political leadership (including the President) learn from this episode? Zuma's matter was a trigger. The real causes of these unrests included political, social and economic factors, which resulted in frustration. The Frustration-Aggression Theory states that when people are frustrated, they resort to unlawful behaviour and join non-governmental forces which resonate with their situation. Currently, South Africans are frustrated. Issues such as corruption, crime, poor standards of living, political appointments, factional politics, increases in petrol prices, and other issues lead to frustration. What is the political leadership doing to contain the situation? Should there be another spark to ignite the inferno, how prepared is the coalition government to deal with that situation?
