Let Perform Chepstow's viral video inspire you to 'break a leg'

A CHEPSTOW community theatre group has struck viral gold with a Monty Python-inspired TikTok teaser that's racked up over half a million views.
But for busy cast and marketing team member, Beth Riordan Francis, the real story isn't just the numbers. It's what they reveal about the power of local theatre to connect, entertain, and inspire.
The video, a lo-fi behind-the-scenes glimpse into the group's upcoming production of Spamalot, blends absurd humour with genuine charm. It's part of a growing trend for Perform Chepstow, whose previous Beauty and the Beast campaign reached over two million views. 'People love the silliness,' says Francis. 'But what they're really responding to is the heart behind it.'
The ensemble has made full use of local castle scenes to enhance the video's appeal.
Now, Francis is using the momentum to call on locals to get involved - as audience members, performers, backstage crew, costume wranglers, and more. 'We're not just putting on a show,' she says. 'We're building a community. And we need people of all ages and skill levels to help us do it.'
Spamalot runs August 7–9 at Wyedean School, Chepstow. Tickets and info at www.performchepstow.co.uk.
The cast of Spamalot includes volunteers aged 18 to 50+, many of whom balance rehearsals with jobs, studies, and family life. The production promises flying cows, musical knights, and plenty of Monty Python-style chaos. But behind the comedy is a serious commitment to making theatre accessible, inclusive, and joyfully collaborative.
Perform Chepstow's viral success is proof that local arts can punch far above their weight. And Francis hopes it will inspire others to step into the spotlight, or lend a hand behind it. 'If you've ever wanted to be part of something creative, now's the time. Come help out, sing a song, or just cheer us on. We'll find a place for you.'

La Quinta hotels condemned over new check-in method

A South Florida hotel is under fire after a guest filmed himself interacting at a virtual check-in station with an employee who appeared to be based overseas. The bizarre encounter occurred at the La Quinta Inn & Suites by Wyndham Sunrise in Sunrise, Florida, outside Fort Lauderdale, where the male guest found himself checking in to his room via video screen. He shared a short clip on TikTok of his exchange with the smiling receptionist, who is heard speaking with a thick South Asian accent. In a follow-up video, the guest filmed himself checking out and confronting the the same remote worker about the arrangement. After the virtual receptionist asked about his stay, the guest replied: 'It was all good, but I'm not happy - you took my job.' The employee responded awkwardly, saying: 'There are some things we cannot do - we did not take your job.' A spokesperson for La Quinta Inn, which is owned by Wyndham Hotels & Resorts, would not confirm or deny to the Daily Mail whether the receptionist was based overseas. 'We are aware of this matter and are actively investigating,' the spokesperson said. 'All La Quinta hotels are independently owned and operated under franchise agreements and required to have a team member at the front desk at all times.' Video of the guest's experience quickly went viral, with critics slamming the hotel over its methods. 'Outsourcing front desk agent is WILD,' one viewer commented. 'This is getting wayyy out of hand. This is 100 percent absurd,' another wrote. 'Florida says they're pro-American but outsourcing everything,' a third pointed out. 'At least it's still a human. Wait till you hear: 'Hi, I'm Sam, your friendly neighborhood AI chatbot,' one person commented. 'I think we can all agree that speaking to an upbeat Indian man ready to provide tech support is more pleasant than a rude woman at the front desk,' another wrote. 'They are in a different time zone. Maybe it's hard to find workers willing to do graveyard shifts? Not saying this is ok, just trying to decipher the "why,"' a third added.

Barry McIlheney was joyously rock ‘n' roll, memorial service told

The service at St Mark's in Dundela, Belfast, allowed former friends and colleagues to gather and celebrate the life of the journalist, broadcaster and publisher, who also launched Heat magazine. Mr McIlheney, originally from Belfast, died in May at the age of 65. Among those paying tribute at the service on Monday was Mike Edgar, formerly a BBC producer, who said Mr McIlheney had been a 'very special man'. He said: 'Barry had an unstoppable passion for music and everyone you could think of in the world of music had respect for him, and rightly so. 'Without Barry I would never have encountered the crazy worlds of Vince Power or The Pogues. 'They all loved him.' He added: 'Barry was a true journalist, someone who exuded confidence at the right time and never missed a good opportunity if it presented itself. 'On one occasion he was live on the radio with me doing a report from a phone box on Carnaby Street in London and as ever feeding in the 10 pence pieces and entertaining us royally. 'Whilst chatting live on-air, Barry looks out the phone box window and spots Depeche Mode walking down Carnaby Street. 'As quick as anything Baz kicks the door of the phone box open and shouts: 'Hey lads, come and talk to the good people of Northern Ireland on the radio!' – which unbelievably, they dutifully did. 'There then followed a Guinness Book of Records-style moment with three members of Depeche Mode and Barry stuffed into a phone box for what turned into a great moment of showbiz madness 'Only Barry McIlheney would have the brass neck to carry off same!' Mr Edgar said McIlheney, despite his success, had always remained passionate about Belfast. He said: 'Like his contemporaries David Hepworth, Mark Ellen or Niall Stokes, Barry might have worn a suit on occasion but no one could ever call him 'a suit'! 'Barry was a leader, but he was also joyously rock 'n' roll and punk rock.' He added: 'He was well read, brave in his work, always curious, never boring, always kind and always impressive. 'Barry was larger than life, he always greeted us with a smile on his face, wearing his big coat with an upturned collar, a cheeky glint in his eye, a smart one-liner up his sleeve, and a well-earned loveable Belfast swagger.' Delivering the homily at the service, Archbishop of Armagh Rev John McDowell said 'the good that Barry did will not be interred with his bones but will live on in your memories forever'. He said: 'Barry never forgot where he came from, but he didn't talk nonsense about it either. 'It wasn't everything and it wasn't nothing.'
