Surprise Discovery Could Rewrite What We Know About Alzheimer's
Researchers at the Buck Institute for Research on Aging have discovered that stored glucose, in the form of glycogen, may not be the passive energy reserve scientists once assumed. Instead, it may actively contribute to the buildup of tau proteins, a hallmark of Alzheimer's and other neurodegenerative diseases.
Tauopathies like Alzheimer's are characterized by toxic tangles of tau inside neurons. But this study, published in Nature Metabolism, found that those tangles may form, at least in part, because of disruptions in how glycogen is processed in the brain.
'Stored glycogen doesn't just sit there in the brain,' said Buck Institute biologist Pankaj Kapahi. 'It is involved in pathology.'
Using fruit fly models and postmortem brain cells from people with Alzheimer's, scientists found elevated levels of both tau and glycogen. The buildup appeared to be driven by a breakdown in how glycogen is metabolized, specifically through the enzyme glycogen phosphorylase (GlyP), which normally helps convert glycogen into usable fuel.
When researchers increased GlyP activity in the flies, they saw significant benefits. Brain cells reduced oxidative stress, protected themselves better, and even lived longer.
The team also tested whether a low-protein diet, already linked to improved brain health, might produce similar effects. It did. Fruit flies fed this restricted diet showed fewer signs of damage and extended lifespans, suggesting that dietary changes could naturally shift brain metabolism in a protective direction.
Even more intriguing, the researchers developed a drug that mimicked the effect of dietary restriction. It worked. And they noted potential crossover with medications like Ozempic, which may also support brain health by targeting glycogen-related pathways.
'By discovering how neurons manage sugar,' said lead researcher Sudipta Bar, 'we may have unearthed a novel therapeutic strategy—one that targets the cell's inner chemistry to fight age-related decline.'

How Florida became America's leading religious-freedom defender under DeSantis: report
The Sunshine State ranks as the nation's number one defender of religious liberty out of all 50 states, according to the First Liberty Institute's fourth annual Religious Liberty in the States (RLS) index. For the first time, Florida tops the national rankings, followed by Montana, Illinois, Ohio and Mississippi. Illinois and Mississippi have garnered a spot in the top five every year since the index was first released by the First Liberty Institute's Center for Religion, Culture & Democracy (CRCD) in 2022. The index uses a detailed scoring system measuring legal protections and ranking states based on the percentage of possible safeguards they have adopted. This year, with 2025's rankings, nearly 55 percentage points separates Florida from the last-place state, West Virginia, which has been last on the index for three years in a row. "We find that the states are laboratories of religious liberty where different protections for free exercise can be implemented and tested," CRCD Executive Director Jordan Ballor wrote in an introduction for the 2025 index. "One of the major goals of the RLS project is to raise awareness of what different states are doing. There are positive lessons to be learned from this experimentation, as states that have been at the vanguard of protecting religious liberty can serve as exemplars for states that have lagged behind." The index's accompanying report points out that Florida "is an exemplar" for how state lawmakers can improve their protections around religious freedom. According to the report, the Sunshine State has improved nearly 20 percentage points since the first RLS index was released in 2022. Much of this improvement came from legislation passed in 2023 strengthening religious protections that allow healthcare providers to refuse to participate in medical procedures or services, such as abortion or sterilization, based on their religious or moral beliefs. The report also pointed to Florida's passage of legislation in 2022 protecting houses of worship from discriminatory treatment during pandemics and other emergencies. "Florida holds several #1 rankings, leading the nation in education, economy, and tourism – and now, Florida is #1 in religious liberty," said Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. "We're grateful for this recognition from the First Liberty Institute, which has just named Florida the number one state in the nation for protecting religious liberty." "This year's findings show clearly that states taking legislative action are pulling ahead," added Kelly Shackelford, president, CEO and chief counsel at First Liberty. "Under the leadership of Gov. DeSantis, Florida passed real laws that protect real people, and now the Sunshine State is the national leader in protecting religious liberty. It's time for more states to follow Gov. DeSantis's example and adopt strong religious liberty laws." While Florida was pointed to in the RLS index as an "exemplar," the report stated that religious freedom was becoming increasingly "tenuous" in the blue state of Illinois. The move downward for the Land of Lincoln was not because the state repealed protections, but mainly because it has not implemented new protections that other states, like Florida, have, the report noted. Per the 2025 RLS report, almost all of Illinois' protections came when the state was more conservative between 1934 and 1998. In an effort to demonstrate the dangers of "complacency," the report also pointed to Colorado when Republicans "routinely" had control of both houses of the state legislature. The environment was friendly toward religious liberty, but lawmakers did not pass much in the way of protections, according to the report. It said the state's complacency contributed to Colorado's "abysmal" 43rd-place finish in the 2024 RLS rankings and 34th finish in the 2025 rankings released Monday. The First Liberty Institute said the results of the 2024 election may give some people the idea that passing laws protecting religious liberty is not as important, but the conservative Christian legal group warned this is "emphatically not the case," noting that data shows passing such laws is just as critical amid a "favorable" political climate.

The FDA Just Approved a New Blue Food Dye: This Is What It's Made Of
This year, food dyes are being put under a microscope. Following the FDA ban on Red Dye No. 3 in January, the administration has since approved three natural food dyes in its stead. Now, in addition to the FDA and Department of Health and Human Services asking food manufacturers to phase out all petroleum-based synthetic dyes from the US food supply, the FDA is asking these companies to fast-track getting rid of Red No. 3 before the 2027 deadline. To help this along, the administration just approved a new blue food dye. As the fourth color additive from natural sources approved by the FDA this year, gardenia (genipin) blue has been granted permission to be used in various foods. According to the administration, this blue dye comes from the fruit of the gardenia, a flowering evergreen. It can be used in hard and soft candy, sports drinks, ready-to-drink teas, flavored or enhanced non-carbonated water and fruit drinks and ades. "This expedited timeline underscored our serious intent to transition away from petroleum-based synthetic dyes in the food supply, said FDA Commissioner Marty Makary in a news release. "Now, by expanding the palette of available colors derived from natural sources, food manufacturers have a variety of options available that will make it easier to end their use of petroleum-based dyes." Gardenia (genipin) blue joins the red algae-based galdieria extract blue, butterfly pea flower extract and the white color calcium phosphate as 2025's new and approved natural food color additives. According to the FDA's order, gardenia (genipin) blue is a dark purple or blue liquid made from the mature fruit of the Gardenia jasminoides Ellis plant with soy protein hydrolysate. Now, you may be thinking: Isn't soy an allergen? According to the GBIG, the soy protein allergens aren't expected to be detected in the final color additive because "unreacted protein hydrolysate is removed during manufacturing." Because no soy protein allergens will be in the final product, the GBIG is asking to be exempt from food allergen labeling. The FDA is currently reviewing this petition.

You've probably noticed an ectopic heartbeat, even if you didn't know it was called that. It's an extra or premature heartbeat that can cause a fluttering or pounding sensation in the chest, dizziness or lightheadedness, or a brief shortness of breath. It sounds fairly serious, but almost everyone will experience an ectopic heartbeat during their lifetime. It's a natural part of the heart's rhythm, and you will likely have seen it displayed on an ECG graph if you've run one. Lifestyle factors such as stress, caffeine, nicotine, alcohol, some medications, lack of sleep, or hormonal changes can all impact ectopic beats. A 30-second single-lead ECG can be run directly from the Galaxy Watch 8 or the Galaxy Watch 8 Classic, and it adds an ectopic heartbeat as one of the determinations under the Inconclusive category. The addition of the ectopic heartbeat as a listed response sets the Galaxy Watch 8 apart from the competition, like the Apple Watch Series 10 and Pixel Watch 3. Both of these rival wearables capture ECGs — and you can detect an ectopic heartbeat in the ECG results — but neither directly lists the ectopic heartbeat as a result. I've never been diagnosed with an ectopic heartbeat. Still, I've had a heart attack before, which puts me at risk, as cardiac disease is listed as a high-risk medical condition. I would never have thought to look for an ectopic heartbeat before, so it's particularly useful that I know the Galaxy Watch 8 can detect it, and specifically call it out. It also affects my colleague Gareth Beavis, who has experienced an increase in unusual heartbeats, especially when tired or recovering from strenuous exercise. He said that while he doesn't receive many of the heartbeat notifications from rival devices, this feature on the Galaxy Watch 8 would be useful in helping determine whether it's worth worrying about. The Galaxy Watch 8 has plenty of new features It's not the only new Galaxy Watch 8 feature, representing a significant update to Samsung's wearable lineup. This feature wasn't even mentioned during the main keynote, as the other key new features will also improve your life and could make it one of the best smartwatches. First, there's the new antioxidant feature, which uses a combination of the new yellow, blue, violet, and IER LEDs to detect carotenoids in your skin. It's a key biomarker of your antioxidant level, which are molecules that help protect the body from damage caused by unstable molecules that can lead to disease in excessive concentrations. There are many different types of carotenoids, but the Galaxy Watch 8 is designed to test a small range of these. Yet, as the first smartwatch to do so, it has me excited for a potential future where we can test far more from the skin. Then there's the new vascular load monitoring during your sleep. My heart attack occurred while I was asleep, and many vascular symptoms present themselves while the body is at rest. Companies have recently added more heart monitoring features specifically for while asleep, and Samsung's new feature is designed to estimate the stress on your vascular system while you're sleeping. It's a feature that I hope I never need, but I will be grateful if I do.
