Authorities said around 100 passengers were on board the RE55 regional express train when it left the tracks in the Biberach district. A large number of emergency services were deployed to the scene. Preliminary reports say the crash resulted in numerous injuries. Several people were killed in what has been described as a "mass casualty incident" by local authorities, reports the Mirror. Federal and local police said the cause of the crash near Riedlingen, roughly 158km (98 miles) west of Munich, remains under investigation. It was not immediately clear how many people were injured. In a statement shared on X, German chancellor Friedrich Merz said: "The train accident in the Biberach district deeply shocks me. "I am in close contact with the Interior Minister and the Transport Minister, and I have asked them to support the rescue services with all available means. "We mourn the victims. I express my condolences to their families." According to the German Press Agency (dpa), Baden-Württemberg's Interior Minister Thomas Strobl (CDU) is also heading to the scene of the accident. His spokesman said he will get an impression of the rescue efforts following the derailment. A spokesperson for the Federal Police Stuttgart told Bild: "Two carriages of the Deutsche Bahn regional express have derailed." Because of the number of people killed and injured, the crash has been declared a mass casualty incident by German authorities.
