Mayawati urges ECI to take cognisance of Gopal Khemka's murder

Hans India2 hours ago
Lucknow: Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) president Mayawati has strongly condemned the murder of prominent industrialist of Bihar, Gopal Khemka, calling it a glaring example of Bihar's deteriorating law and order situation.
She has urged the Election Commission of India (ECI) to take immediate cognisance of the matter and initiate appropriate action in view of the upcoming Assembly elections in the state.
In a post on X on Monday, Mayawati wrote, 'In Bihar, atrocities, murders, and caste-based exploitation -- especially targeting Dalits, backward classes, the poor, and women -- have long been matters of concern. But the recent sensational killing of Gopal Khemka in Patna, amid ongoing violent incidents ahead of the elections, has further vitiated the political atmosphere and exposed the worsening law and order situation in the state.'
She added that if the Election Commission intervenes in time, it would help ensure a peaceful and fair election process.
'During the Special Intensive Revision of the voter list, the surge in such incidents raises serious questions. Who is behind this violence and for whose vested interests? The state's coalition government is already in the dock, and political tensions are mounting,' she said.
Mayawati also reiterated her party's position and electoral strategy in Bihar.
'The BSP represents the interests of Bahujans -- especially Dalits, backward classes, the deprived, the poor, and labourers. We are contesting the Bihar Assembly elections on our own, relying solely on the support of our cadre and well-wishers -- in terms of body, mind, and resources.'
She appealed to the ECI to ensure that elections are shielded from the misuse of government machinery, as well as muscle power, money power, and criminal elements.
'Strict measures must be taken in time to ensure free and fair elections,' she emphasised.
Industrialist and BJP leader Gopal Khemka was shot dead recently in Patna's Gandhi Maidan police station area. The incident has since become a high-profile case, and a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to probe the case, with support from Patna Police, Bihar STF, and technical teams.

INDIA bloc calls 'Bihar bandh' on July 9 against EC's revision of voters' list in State, Rahul Gandhi likely to participate

PATNA: Opposition INDIA bloc has called for 'Bihar bandh' on July 9 to protest against ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in the State. Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi will also participate in the bandh. RJD leader Tejashwi Prasad Yadav, also the chairman of INDIA bloc's coordination committee for Bihar assembly elections, said on July 7 that the Opposition has given a call for 'Bihar bandh' to vent their ire against the ongoing SIR of voters' list ahead of assembly elections. 'We will enforce 'chakka jam' on July 9. Both the Election Commission and government will be on target of the Opposition. It is quite surprising that EC is changing its orders every hour. As a result, BLOs and other officials engaged in the verification exercise are confused,' he told the media.

Congress Allavaru slams NDA over law and order; calls Bihar 'crime capital' of India

Patna: Bihar Congress incharge Krishna Allavaru launched a sharp attack on the NDA government in Bihar on Monday, alleging a collapse of law and order under its rule. He held Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah accountable for the situation in the state. Speaking to media persons at Patna airport, Allavaru said: 'There is a rule of goons in Bihar and it has become the 'crime capital' of India under the BJP. Common people are dying every day, and big businessmen are being killed in front of their homes.' Questioning the purpose of governance if citizens are not safe, he added: 'Why is the government running if no one's life is secure? In Patna, big people and small people are being killed everywhere. "PM Modi and Amit Shah should answer because they are running the Bihar government from the back door using Nitish Kumar as a front.' On Prime Minister Modi's upcoming visit to Bihar, the Congress leader said the PM is welcome but must answer to the people of Bihar. 'What has he given to Bihar in 11 years of the double-engine government? He has made many big statements, but no work has been done." "Murders happen in broad daylight, unemployment is rising, inflation is increasing, education is stagnant, hospitals are neglected, and there is no medicine,' he added. He further said, 'These are the issues of the people. He is the Prime Minister and should answer, and the people of Bihar should demand accountability.' On the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list being conducted in Bihar, Allavaru alleged that the Election Commission is working in favour of the BJP. 'The same thing that happened in Maharashtra, Haryana, and other places is happening in Bihar now. The BJP benefited there, and the election was stolen,' he claimed. He further professed: 'In Bihar, the Election Commission is sitting in the lap of the BJP. So why would the BJP have any problem with this process when it benefits them?' Allavaru's remarks come amid rising political tensions in Bihar following the murder of prominent businessman Gopal Khemka in Patna, which has intensified Opposition attacks on the NDA government over law and order ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections. The Congress, along with other Grand Alliance partners, is raising concerns over governance, voter list revisions, and the safety of citizens under CM Nitish Kumar's leadership.

'No clarity yet': Tejashwi Yadav slams Election Commission over Bihar SIR drive; once again claims that names will be 'removed' from list

RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav NEW DELHI: Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav on Monday alleged that his party-led opposition Mahagathbandhan (Grand Alliance) is yet to get clarity from the Election Commission of India (ECI) regarding the poll panel's contentious electoral roll revision exercise in poll-bound Bihar. His remarks came on a day when the Supreme Court agreed to hear petitions challenging ECI's Special Intensive Revision (SIR), with the hearing set to be held on Thursday. "On July 5, we met ECI officials and posed our questions. The worry is that we have no clarity from them so far," Yadav said at a joint press conference of the Mahagathbandhan allies. The Bihar EC, on the other hand, has no authority to provide an answer as it works "only as a post office," he added. Further, the former deputy chief minister and current leader of opposition reiterated his charge that people would lose their voting rights if they do not have the 11 documents which EC has sought in the state. "People of don't have the 11 documents which ECI has asked for; rather, they have an Aadhar card, MGNREGA card, and ration card. This is the only document which the poor people of Bihar have. It is clear that the people who do not have these 11 documents, their names will be removed," Yadav said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like One of the Most Successful Investors of All Time, Warren Buffett, Recommends: 5 Books for Turning... The Supreme Court petitions against thedrive were filed by RJD MP Manoj Jha, the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR), activist Yogendra Yadav, Trinamool MP Mahua Moitra, and former Bihar MLA Mujahid Alam. The petitioners sought a direction to quash ECI's June 24 directive, which requires large sections of voters in Bihar to submit proof of citizenship to remain on the electoral rolls. They also raised concerns over the exclusion of widely held documents like Aadhaar and ration cards, stating that this would "disproportionately affect" the poor and marginalised voters, especially in rural Bihar.
