NYC launches effort to expand drone use after NYPD's 200th subway surfing bust: ‘Future of public safety'
The mayor this week announced a new 'Drone Operations Committee' that will coordinate and expand official deployments of the aerial robots citywide.
The committee, overseen by Deputy Mayor for Public Safety Kaz Daughtry, will 'cement New York City's position as a national leader' in the airborne technology, officials said in a press release.

'Drones are the future of public safety, and under Deputy Mayor Daughtry's leadership, New York City's first-ever Drone Operations Committee will take this technology to the next level,' Adams said in a statement.
'New Yorkers deserve to know that when there's an emergency — whether it's a terror threat, a protest, or a natural disaster.'
The announcement comes after the successful 2023 launch of the NYPD Technical Assistance Response Unit's expanded drone program, which recorded it's 200th subway surfing bust this month.
In that case, hair-raising police drone footage nabbed four youths climbing on top of a northbound 6 train as it crossed over the Westchester Avenue Bridge on July 10 — with all the subway surfers later busted.

Drones have also been deployed to keep a lookout for sharks at city beaches, track suspects who flee crime scenes and monitor large-scale public events in the five boroughs.
The mayor's high-flying new committee will also coordinate the expansion of the NYPD's 'Drone as First Responder' initiative, which can send the bots to any city precinct within minutes.
'Our public safety strategy is built on interagency coordination, real-time intelligence, and the smartest technology available,' Daughtry said in a statement.
'Drones are a force multiplier — they give us eyes on the ground in seconds, help us coordinate evacuations, monitor critical infrastructure, and keep our first responders safe,' he added.

AOC ripped as her NYC district is overrun by 'Market of Sweethearts'
Queens residents, merchants and civic leaders blasted US Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for being missing in action in the fight to clean up the infamous 'Market of Sweethearts'. Locals along the Roosevelt Avenue corridor have begged for help as the area has been plagued by rampant prostitution and illegal street vendors — fueled in part by gangs who got a foothold in the area due to the city's migrant crisis. 'I have not personally seen Ocasio-Cortez since she's been elected. I have not seen her in the community,' said Rosa Sanchez, president of the Restore Roosevelt Avenue Coalition. Despite efforts of the NYPD and the city to clean up the troubled corridor, illegal vendors and merchants still have a foothold — sometimes peddling items stolen from local stores, locals said. Sanchez said the unlicensed vendors are putting legitimate merchants out of business while young women forced into sex work who are getting no help from politicians. Twenty three residents and local merchants told a reporter they have never seen AOC in the neighborhood. 'No, I have never seen AOC here. I've seen the local city councilman [Francisco Moya]. I've seen the police. I've never seen AOC,' said Jenny Leo, 54, a pharmacist at Mi. Much more needs to be done and residents in the corridor could use AOC's help, said former Councilman Hiram Monserrate — a neighborhood activist who used to rep the area and resides in East Elmhurst. Crime dropped 28% amid beefed up police enforcement, the mayor said last month. Gov. Kathy Hochul last fall also dispatched 100 state troopers to assist the NYPD along Roosevelt. Heavily armored ‘Golf Force One' debuts as it trails Trump on the Scottish links less than a year after assassination attempt
President Trump's security team has debuted what appears to be a heavily armored golf cart 10 months after a would-be assassin aimed an SKS-style rifle toward him at his West Palm Beach tee resort. As the president played at the Trump Turnberry course in South Ayrshire, Scotland, this weekend, an imposing, apparently heavily fortified black vehicle followed close behind — with security experts saying it bears all the hallmarks of an armor-reinforced golf cart in the mold of Trump's official limo, a k a 'The Beast.' Relf said that while it's difficult to ascertain exactly which elements have been reinforced, noting companies such as his often remove and discreetly replace nearly every interior element with armor plating, the vehicle's darkened front windscreen featuring black banding is a dead giveaway that something major is afoot with it. 'From those photos, that is 100% armored,' he told the outlet. 'The windscreen is a giveaway, as are the side panels, doors and the large panel at the rear above the load tray.' He said the vehicle appeared to be kitted out for 'defensive, not offensive' purposes and claimed the tinted windows could indicate a robust transparent armor has been added. 7 According to experts, the new armored cart appears to be modeled after Trump's official limousine — known as 'The Beast.' On Sept. 15, Ryan Routh, 59, trained a rifle styled after a Soviet-designed semiautomatic at Trump's security detail as the president walked along the fifth hole at the Trump International Golf Club in Florida. Two months earlier, Trump survived another assassination attempt at a campaign rally in Butler, Pa., carried out by 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks. Crooks perched on the rooftop of a building just outside the Butler fairgrounds and opened fire with an AR-style rifle, nicking Trump's ear, seriously wounding an audience member and killing former firefighter Corey Comperatore. Drunk teen killed groom-to-be in Harlem wrong-way horror after night out at NYC club, new suit alleges
The Long Island teen accused of driving the wrong-way on the Henry Hudson Parkway and killing a man 24 hours before the victim's wedding was allegedly drunk and being chased by an off-duty NYPD cop at the time of the crash. Jimmy Connors had allegedly spent the night drinking at Nebula on West 41st Street, where staff served him alcohol despite him being 'visibly intoxicated' in the hours before the horrific Aug. 24 collision, according to a lawsuit. After Connors, 17, left the club, he allegedly got behind the wheel of a white Chevy Silverado with Ontario plates and crashed into another car — prompting off-duty cop Boubacar Barry, who witnessed the wreck, to pursue him in his personal SUV instead of calling 911, according to the Manhattan Supreme Court filing. 4 Kirk Walker, a Manhattan dad of three, was just one day from marrying his fiancée when he was killed in the head-on crash. Advertisement Both vehicles then barreled south in the northbound lanes of the parkway, where the Silverado slammed head-on into a car driven by Kirk Walker and his cousin, Rob McLaurin, authorities said. Walker, 38, was one day from his wedding when he and McLaurin were killed. Walker and McLaurin had just left the groom-to-be's bachelor party and were driving north near West 154th Street in a Dodge Challenger when the 2:20 a.m. crash occurred, said Walker's fiancée, Shauntea Weaver, who filed the lawsuit this week against Connors, Barry, Nebula, the NYPD and the city. Advertisement Connors fled after the wreck, leaving behind his injured 21-year-old passenger. Police said the passenger tried to run but was caught 30 feet away. 4 The deadly 2:20 a.m. wreck happened as Walker and his cousin were returning from the groom-to-be's bachelor party. Post Mayor Eric Adams even put up $1,000 of his own money to help catch the suspect. Connors, of Syosset, was nabbed the next day at the Canadian border, limping, bloodied and without ID. Customs agents identified him using NYPD images that allegedly showed him bolting from the crash. Advertisement He was taken back to New York and indicted on charges including second-degree murder, manslaughter and leaving the scene of a fatal crash. He pleaded not guilty. His attorney Jonathan Perez previously told The Post that Connors is 'sick, autistic, has epilepsy' and believes he was manipulated by someone else in the car. Connors has been held without bail since his arraignment, the Manhattan District Attorney's office said. 4 Jimmy Connors, 17, was allegedly drunk and fleeing an off-duty NYPD officer when he drove the wrong way on the Henry Hudson Parkway, killing two men. Post Advertisement Walker, a Manhattan father of three and rental-car-business owner, was set to marry Weaver in a lavish New Jersey ceremony. 'Kirk was taken from me just as we were starting our new life together,' Weaver said in a statement released through her attorneys to The Post. 'He was the love of my life … We've been left trying to pick up the pieces of our lives and come to terms with a future without him in it. Our lives will never be the same.' Weaver, now the administrator of Walker's estate, argued in court papers that Barry acted as a cop — not a civilian — making the city and NYPD responsible for the unauthorized chase, which she contends isn't covered by emergency-response laws. Nebula also violated the state's Dram Shop Act, which allows victims to sue bars that serve alcohol to underage or visibly intoxicated patrons who later cause harm, Weaver said in the legal filing. 4 Walker's fiancée, Shauntea Weaver, is suing the city, NYPD, Nebula nightclub and Connors, alleging negligence and wrongful death. Weaver is seeking unspecified damages for wrongful death, conscious pain and suffering, negligence, emotional and psychological loss, funeral expenses and punitive damages. The NYPD and Nebula did not immediately respond to requests for comment. A spokesperson for the Mayor's Office referred questions to the NYPD.
