Rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra's son attends Guru Nanak Jahaz Remembrance Day event in Canada city
Janmeet Singh's great-grandfather (Jaswant Singh Khalra's grandfather), Harnam Singh, was one of the 376 passengers aboard the Japanese steamship Komagata Maru (Guru Nanak Jahaz) when it reached Vancouver on May 23, 1914. He was arrested when the vessel reached India on Sept 27, 1914.
The declaration at Surrey City Hall was attended by a host of dignitaries, including members of Parliament Sukh Dhaliwal and Gurbax Singh Saini, along with British Columbia legislative assembly members Amina Shah, Garry Begg, Mandeep Singh Dhaliwal, Harman Bhangu, and Jody Toor.
Surrey councillor Harry Bains formally presented a copy of the proclamation to Janmeet Singh.
Notable attendees also included researcher and Ragi Bhai Baldeep Singh, and former Pakistani MP Rai Aziz Ullah Khan, whose family are custodians of the 17th-century Ganga Sagar, a copper urn belonging to tenth Sikh master Guru Gobind Singh.
Gurvinder Singh Dhaliwal from the Guru Nanak Jahaz Heritage Society, the driving force behind the proclamation, spoke about the historical significance of the steamship. Wearing a "Guru Nanak Jahaz" imprinted tee, Dhaliwal recounted how the passengers were denied entry and kept near Vancouver for two months before their forced return.
It was further emphasised the importance of rectifying past wrongs and re-naming the vessel Guru Nanak Jahaz, as it was renamed by the passengers, led by Baba Gurdit Singh, after religious ceremonies.

TMC blames government for Parliament disruptions
Agency: PTI Last Updated: New Delhi, Jul 31 (PTI) Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha leader Derek O'Brien on Thursday blamed the government for repeated adjournments in Parliament, and said the last time a notice of opposition was admitted for a discussion was in 2016. The remarks came as the Rajya Sabha was once again disrupted amid the Opposition's demand for a debate on the SIR in Bihar. 'The PM stays away from Parliament. The HM uses language in Parliament goons would be proud of. The last time the Union govt allowed a discussion on an 'urgent' issue raised by the Oppn was 9 years ago. (Nov 2016, Notebandi)," O'Brien said. He was referring to a discussion on demonetisation in November 2016. 'Modi & Shah will disrupt Parliament till Aug 21," he said. Both Houses of Parliament have seen protests by opposition MPs against the ongoing voter roll revision, leading to repeated adjournments through the session. Opposition parties have alleged that the exercise would lead to disenfranchisement of many, mostly from the poor sections, who may not have the documents that the EC is demanding. They have also raised concerns about the way the first phase of the exercise was executed in Bihar. India has granted over 96 lakh evisas to foreigners from 2020 till July 20 this year, the government informed Parliament on Thursday. read more India has issued more than 96 lakh electronic visas to foreign nationals between 2020 and July 20, 2025, the government informed the Rajya Sabha on Thursday. Responding to a written question, Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh also stated that the number of countries eligible for India's e-visa programme has expanded from 171 in 2020 to 181 in 2025. In reply to queries about e-visa issuance and the widening of eligibility over the last five years, Singh noted, 'Total number of e-visas granted from 2020 to 20.07.2025 is 96,44,567.' STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) also shared information on India's assistance to international pilgrims, including those travelling for Hajj and Sikh pilgrims using the Kartarpur Corridor. 'Each year, the Saudi authorities announce a Hajj quota for India. In recent years, this quota has, on average, been set at 1,75,025 Indian pilgrims,' the minister stated. On the status of the Kartarpur Corridor, Singh said, 'Since its inauguration, the corridor has been used by over 4,00,000 pilgrims to visit the holy Gurdwara in Pakistan.' However, he clarified that 'Kartarpur Corridor operations have been suspended since Operation Sindoor.' He added that under the 1974 India-Pakistan Protocol on Visits to Religious Shrines, both countries facilitate pilgrim visits across the border. Singh recalled the bilateral agreement signed on October 24, 2019, to operationalise the Kartarpur Corridor in time for the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. 'An agreement between the Government of the Republic of India and the Government of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan for the facilitation of pilgrims to visit Gurdwara Darbar Sahib Kartarpur, Narowal, Pakistan, was signed on 24 October, 2019, in order to fulfil the long-standing demand of pilgrims for easy and smooth access to the holy Gurdwara and to operationalise the corridor for the 550th Birth Anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji,' he said. In another response, the MEA was asked to provide data on Indian labourers employed overseas in construction and other labour-intensive sectors. 'As per available data, a total of 16,06,964 Indian workers (including those engaged in construction/labour-intensive works) holding Emigration Check Required (ECR) category passports have been issued Emigration Clearance (EC) for employment in ECR countries during the last five years from January 2020 to 30 June, 2025,' Singh said. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The ministry also addressed a query on whether the government had conducted any classification of the Indian diaspora based on skill sets, disciplines, or subject areas. Singh explained that the government maintains country-wise data on the diaspora, categorised into Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs), and Indian students abroad. 'As of January 2025, there are 17.17 million NRIs and 17.18 million PIOs residing across the world, including 1.88 million Indian students studying abroad,' he stated. However, he clarified, 'The Government has not carried out any exercise to categorise the Indian diaspora on the basis of their discipline/subject expertise or to map their skill sets.' FATF Team To Visit Pakistan Amid Terror Funding, Hawala Networks Complaints: Source
The upcoming review will assess Pakistan's compliance with 34 action points agreed upon with FATF and APG in 2022 A delegation from the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), along with the Asia Pacific Group (APG), is likely to visit Pakistan in August for a monitoring and evaluation review, following multiple complaints to FATF regarding Islamabad's alleged role in terror financing and the resurgence of grey money markets. A senior FATF source told CNN-News18 that the watchdog has raised concerns over Pakistan emerging as a hub for hawala-hundi operations, with Afghan and Iranian smugglers reportedly using its grey markets to transfer US dollars. The source further said that the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) is allegedly manipulating foreign exchange dealers to carry out large, illegal transactions outside formal banking systems. The upcoming review will assess Pakistan's compliance with 34 action points agreed upon with FATF and APG in 2022. During the visit, the team is also expected to meet senior officials from the Ministry of Finance, State Bank of Pakistan, Securities and Investment Finance Commission (SIFC), Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), intelligence agencies, and other key institutions. According to intelligence reports, Pakistan's security agencies, including the ISI, Military Intelligence (MI), and the Intelligence Bureau (IB), are allegedly involved in hawala operations. The reports further claim that in the last two weeks, senior Pakistani army intelligence officers, including ISI Director General Major General Faisal Naseer, met with forex dealers in an attempt to hide financial trails and avoid potential disclosures to FATF inspectors. Additionally, New Delhi has filed several complaints with FATF, especially after the Pahalgam terror attack in April 22, the source revealed. The most recent complaint relates to a public post by Pakistan's Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi on social media platform X. In the post, Naqvi accused a senior government official in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) of paying ransom money to the Taliban. The post was made in response to KP Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur's criticism of ISI operations and potential military action in the province. The FATF visit in August will be critical. The outcomes of its preliminary assessment will determine whether Pakistan once again risks being placed on the FATF 'grey list'. The country has previously been grey-listed three times: from February 2008 to June 2010, February 2012 to February 2015, and from June 2018 to October 2022. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
